APC vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Anadarko Petroleum Corporation is among the largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the world, with 2.3 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) of proved reserves as of December 31, 2009. Anadarko’s primary business segments are managed separately due to the... More

- Thursday, June 13, 8:11 AM Uncertainty over government energy policy is keeping Japanese buyers from signing contracts for fuel from the world’s second-largest liquefied natural gas plant planned in Mozambique, project developer Anadarko Petroleum (APC) says. Buyers from the world’s biggest importer of LNG also are waiting for clarity from the Obama administration on how much U.S. gas will be available. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, June 12, 12:14 PM Occidental Petroleum's (OXY) proposal to split its U.S. and foreign businesses is pressuring more oil companies to follow suit, with ConocoPhillips (COP), Anadarko (APC) and Talisman (TLM) among those asking whether the U.S. shale boom has made their global business models obsolete. Separating relatively low-cost investments in U.S. shale from foreign assets carrying bigger potential rewards/risks will unlock a bounty for shareholders, Deutsche Bank's Paul Sankey says. 5 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, June 12, 11:57 AM Western Gas Partners (WES +0.3%) says it will begin construction of a second cryogenic processing train at its Lancaster plant in the DJ Basin this year, with capacity of 300M cf/day and throughput of 200M via Anadarko (APC). Also, WES will pick up a 25% at-cost interest in a JV with Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) in two fractionation trains in Mont Belvieu, Tex., already under construction. Comment! [Energy]
- Tuesday, June 11, 3:07 PM India’s oil minister tries to play down embarrassment caused by state-owned Oil & Gas Corp.’s premature announcement of a $2.5B deal to buy a stake in the Rovuma gas field in Mozambique. ONGC had hailed the acquisition as “a significant step” in achieving India’s energy security. Meanwhile, Mozambique’s state-backed petroleum company says it’s not interested in selling its Rovuma stake to international producers. Comment! [Energy]
- Monday, June 10, 10:12 AM Indian pair ONGC Videsh and Oil India agree to acquire Videocon Industries' 10% share of the Area-1 block in the Rovuma natural gas field off Mozambique for ~$2.5B. Anadarko Petroleum (APC) holds a 36.5% stake in Area 1. The Indian partners say the block is east Africa’s largest gas discovery, with estimated recoverable reserves of 35T-65T cu. ft. of natural gas. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, June 5, 11:25 AM Deutsche Bank's top 10 list of oil and gas stocks to buy factors in lower natural gas prices and more supply: XEC, EQT, APC, CIE, QEP, CXO, EOG, CLR, NBL, GDP. The firm's price targets for Cimarex and EQT, at $99 and $110 respectively, are much higher than Wall Street consensus. 1 Comment [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, June 4, 8:51 AM FMC Technologies (FTI) receives orders from Anadarko Petroleum (APC) for subsea equipment for its Heidelberg field in the Gulf of Mexico. FTI's scope of supply includes five enhanced horizontal subsea trees, tree mounted controls, two manifolds and other associated tooling and equipment. Financial terms were not disclosed. Comment! [Energy]
- Monday, June 3, 12:33 PM The perfect portfolio for Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Anadarko (APC), Apache (APA) and BG Group (BRGYY.PK) - each on pace to join the 1M-barrel club of oil producers within five years - would combine a few big projects to underpin long-term production with shale assets for the growth profile, Bernstein says; though APC looks strong in this regard, the better bet could be APA, which trades at only 9x forward earnings. Comment! [Energy]
- Thursday, May 30, 3:14 PM Tullow Oil (TUWLF.PK, TUWOY.PK) says Ghana has given the green light for a second major offshore oil development, paving the way for production to start on the $6B project not far from the Jubilee project. Tullow and partners Anadarko (APC) and Kosmos Energy (KOS) plan to pump ~80K bbl/day from the Tweneboa, Enyenra and Ntomme deposits, collectively known as TEN, starting in 2016. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, May 29, 5:15 PM BAML analysts lower their expectations for Brent crude prices on weakening demand in China and Europe, rising supplies and higher inventories - "a cocktail for lower prices." But demand this summer should rise, prompting the firm to suggest a list of six "stocks for the summer" to own: APC, OXY, MRO, PXD, DVN, CHK. 1 Comment [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, May 27, 3:32 AM Shell (RDS.A) has pulled out of talks to acquire a stake in Anadarko Petroleum's (APC) gas discoveries off the coast of Mozambique in East Africa, due to a high price. Instead, Shell will focus on projects off the coasts of Benin, Gabon and South Africa on the other side of the continent. While these projects are more uncertain, they could be more lucrative, as West African prospects tend to provide more oil than gas. 6 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, May 22, 11:07 AM AIG remains at the top Goldman's list of hedge fund hotels (the 50 stocks appearing most frequently among hedge fund top 10 holdings). Google (GOOG) retains its #2 position. Apple (APPL) - in the top spot for 3 years until February - remains at #3. Goldman notes the basket has outperformed the S&P a bit this year and the top 20 has done better by more than 1000 basis points. We smell an ETF offering. The rest of the top 20: C, GM, PCLN, VMED, NWSA, MSFT, HTZ, JPM, APC, PFE, QCOM, CHTR, HES, CBS, EBAY, DAL, EQIX. 4 Comments
- Monday, May 20, 1:00 PM Themis Trading's Joe Saluzzi says SEC rules designed to head off so-called "flash crashes" might have failed to arrest Anadarko's (APC +1.6%) plunge from over $90 per share to just a penny Friday afternoon because during the first phase of the rules' implementation, restrictions "don't apply after 3:30 p.m." Saluzzi also notes that the APC experience shows that "limit orders are mostly placed by short term, hyper speed 'liquidity providers' who quickly cancel at the [first] sign of trouble." Comment!
- Monday, May 20, 12:40 PM Wall Street cheers Chesapeake's (CHK +4%) appointment of Doug Lawler as CEO as a vote of confidence in CHK after building a strong reputation at Anadarko (APC). While hopeful the move will improve capital discipline and allocation decisions, Tudor Pickering cautions it will be a steep wall to climb "given the balance sheet leverage and need to materially sell assets into a weak [acquisitions] market." 3 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Monday, May 20, 5:15 AM Directors at Chesapeake Energy (CHK) recruit Anadarko (APC) senior VP of international and deep-water operations Robert Douglas Lawler to succeed Aubrey McClendon as CEO, WSJ says. Lawler, a seasoned industry veteran, will join CHK on June 17 and says he "looks forward to generating value for shareholders in the years ahead." Besides plugging a multi-billion dollar gap between the company's spending and cash flow, Lawler's greatest challenge might be dealing with McClendon, whose contractual well investment rights mean he will likely be a part of the picture at CHK even if he isn't at the helm. 4 Comments [Energy, Top Stories]
- Friday, May 17, 5:14 PM The NYSE cancels rogue trades in Anadarko Petroleum (APC) from the final second of the trading day that took the stock from $90 to one cent in some trades. NYSE initiated a "clearly erroneous execution review,” resulting in cancellation of trades executed at or below $87.56/share in that last second. 5 Comments [Energy]
