Monday, February 4, 9:22 AM More on Oracle/Acme Packet: The purchase of Acme, whose session border controllers shuffle VoIP traffic between networks, makes Oracle a telecom equipment firm. While Oracle sells plenty of software, servers, and storage to service providers, it hasn't yet made such a direct foray into infrastructure gear. However, Acme's solutions are differentiated by its Net-Net OS and other software, which arguably complement Oracle's service management and unified communications offerings for telcos and enterprises. Friday, January 4, 12:58 PM Heavily-shorted Acme Packet (APKT +12.4%) soars on an upgrade to Buy from Stifel, which predicts sales of Acme's session border controllers will get a big 2013 lift from deployments of VoLTE systems from mobile carriers. Stifel's checks indicate AT&T will likely start deploying VoLTE "in the very near-future," and thinks there are launch dates for 11-13 of the 27 VoLTE projects Acme has said it's a part of. It thinks EPS could jump to $0.65-$0.70 in 2013 (the consensus is at $0.52) and $1 in 2014. Acme fell more than once last year on reports of VoLTE delays. (yesterday) Comment! Thursday, January 3, 4:16 PM Sonus (SONS +2.6%) finished the day higher, and Acme Packet (APKT -5.1%) lower, after Northland's Catharine Trebnick reported Verizon is deploying Sonus' session border controllers (SBCs) on the New York-Boston segment of its IP backbone. Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 10:17 AM In addition to hiking its dividend, AT&T (T -2.9%) says it plans to spend $22B on capex each of the next 3 years, up from 2011's $19B-$20B. $8B will be spent on building AT&T's 4G LTE network, which trails Verizon (VZ -1.5%) in terms of coverage, and $6B on expanding its wireline broadband network. Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 1:43 PM Ahead of its investor day, Ericsson (ERIC -1.2%) forecast the telecom equipment market will show a CAGR of just 3%-5% from 2012-2015. In light of all the bad earnings news and capex forecasts to hit the telecom equipment space lately, not too many will argue with Ericsson's assessment. The company does, however, think the telecom services, support solutions, and OSS software markets, where it has been trying to grow its positions, will post healthier (though not spectacular) CAGRs. Friday, October 26, 2012, 11:24 AM Acme Packet (APKT +14.4%) makes like the Roadrunner following its Q3 report. In light of Acme's recent struggles and those of telecom equipment peers (I, II), the Street is relieved to see Q4 guidance for revenue of $270M-$275M and EPS of $0.43-$0.47 (consensus is for $272.2M and $0.47). The VoIP infrastructure provider noted on its earnings call European service provider demand is "a bright spot," even as North American demand (long a problem) remains weak. Comment!
