Signs 29 processor licenses for a broad range of applications. Enters Q4 with record order backlog. Forecasts dollar revenue in line with with market expectations. Shares +2% in London. Comment! - Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 5:48 PM Also mentioned during Intel's (INTC) call: The company joins others in stating Chinese demand has softened (particularly for notebooks). Enterprise PC demand has also slumped. Though server CPU ASPs were up 1% Y/Y, they fell 7% Q/Q thanks to a mix shift - cloud environments often use cheaper server CPUs than corporate data centers, making the server industry's growing dependence on the former a possible long-term issue. But Intel doesn't seem worried about ARM-based (ARMH) server CPUs, noting they still lack many mission-critical features. (more on INTC) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 6:39 PM Apple (AAPL) has "deliberated" about migrating its Mac hardware away from Intel (INTC) CPUs, sources tell Bloomberg Businessweek, though such a move isn't considered imminent. If Apple was to abandon Intel, it would likely be in favor of its ARM-based A-series processors, currently used in iOS devices. Last year, a Japanese blog reported Apple put an A5 chip inside a MacBook Air test model, and an Intel exec claimed Apple threatened to end its relationship with Intel over power consumption. Will Haswell's power savings be enough to satisfy Apple? 29 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 7:06 PM The head of AMD's SeaMicro server unit predicts ARM-based (ARMH) server CPUs will "have a huge impact" down the line. The biggest selling points for SeaMicro's servers are density and power consumption, and those are the same reasons many in the industry are exploring the use of ARM CPUs, in spite of near-term software issues. Prototype ARM servers using AppliedMicro (AMCC - previous) processors could arrive as soon as the year's end. (new SeaMicro hardware) (Marvell) 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, September 14, 2012, 4:32 PM Intel's (INTC) is interested in developing chip architectures similar to ARM's (ARMH) big.LITTLE, which combines a powerful CPU core with a smaller, low-power core that can handle background tasks. Adopting such an architecture could be crucial to keeping pace with ARM-based solutions in terms of power consumption. Also, Intel execs tell The Inquirer the processors found in its Xeon Phi server accelerator cards could eventually be built into its Xeon CPUs - that could make life more difficult for NVDA's Tesla processors. (14nm chips) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, September 4, 2012, 11:48 AM ARM (ARMH -8.2%) dives in response to CEO Warren East's cautious remarks about 2H demand, and a downgrade to Sell from Deutsche. The firm is worried about the impact of declining smartphone baseband and app processor prices (it thinks declining Android phone prices will drive chip prices lower), as well as Intel's (INTC) growing presence in the smartphone and tablet CPU markets. Nonetheless, Deutsche sees ARM processors going into 30% of 2020 notebooks and servers. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, September 3, 2012, 3:09 AM ARM (ARMH) CEO Warren East has warned of a slowdown in sales in H2, saying that many of its customers are "indicating that they are not expecting an uplift, and mathematically that will hit us." East's warning comes despite the expected launch of a new iPhone and Samsung Galaxy Note tablet. Because of ARM's concerns, the company is scaling back its recruitment plans. Shares -3.05% in London. 4 Comments [Tech, Top Stories]
- Friday, August 31, 2012, 12:20 PM Will MIPS' (MIPS +3.8%) efforts to find a buyer soon bear fruit? Benchmark's Gary Mobley thinks so: he claims a meeting with management left him remaining confident the CPU core developer/patent holder's "assets will be broken up and sold within the next four months." Mobley, who has a $10 PT, sees U.K.-based graphics core developer Imagination (IGNMF.PK) as the most logical buyer, but thinks a bid from ARM (ARMH), CEVA, or Synopsys (SNPS) is also possible. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, August 30, 2012, 1:47 PM IFA 2012 is producing a deluge of Windows 8/RT (MSFT) tablets. Notables include Dell's (DELL) XPS 10 tablet and XPS 12 onvertible; new tablet and ultrabook models for H-P's (HPQ) high-end ENVY line; and Toshiba's U925t ultrabook, which sports a slide-out display and Corning (GLW) Gorilla Glass. Between these products and Microsoft Surface, Windows 8 won't lack for quality hardware - its success will come down to the consumer/business response to its much-debated software. (Samsung) (Lenovo) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 11:16 AM Intel (INTC) is pursuing a guerrilla approach to the smartphone processor market, striking deals with carriers and low-end Android OEMs (often in emerging markets) to grab share from the ARM-based (ARMH) processors that dominate the space. The latest example is a deal with Russian carrier MegaFon, which will use an Intel Medfield processor to offer a private-label phone. Intel has already struck smartphone deals with Motorola, China's Lenovo and ZTE, India's Lava, and French carrier Orange. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, August 17, 2012, 1:57 PM ARM-based (ARMH) Windows RT (MSFT) tablets will cost $200-$300 less than Intel/AMD-based Windows 8 Pro tablets, predicts Lenovo's (LNVGY.PK) North American chief, while adding he expects the latter to go for $600-$700. Such a pricing edge would leave RT systems, which don't support existing Windows software, on much better competitive footing relative to the iPad and Android tablets than Pro systems. A recently-announced Lenovo Pro tablet was well-received. ($199 Surface RT rumor) 1 Comment [Tech]

Ashraf Eassa: You should be playing this by owning LEAP puts then, not shorting common. -
Eassa: Ashraf: Options are a rigged game with fixed expiration and liquidity issues, especially for far out of the money puts/calls. Not for me.
