- Thursday, August 9, 2012, 1:03 PM Lenovo's (LNVGY.PK) ThinkPad Tablet 2 is "the Windows tablet we've been waiting for," declares Mashable's Peter Pachal. Its thickness and weight is close to that of the ARM-based (ARMH) version of Microsoft Surface (not to mention the iPad), but unlike that product, the Tablet 2 runs Windows 8 Pro (MSFT), thanks to its use of an Intel (INTC) Clover Trail Atom CPU. That means it can run existing Windows apps in addition to new Metro apps. Pricing hasn't been disclosed. (Intel design wins) 6 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, August 6, 2012, 12:19 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) plans to introduce an ARM-based (ARMH) server CPU, the Seoul Economic Daily reports. There has already been speculation on this front due to Samsung's poaching of AMD talent. If true, Samsung would enter a budding market featuring Marvell, Applied Micro, and H-P partner Calxeda. Software support for ARM server CPUs is limited, but many are intrigued by their potential power and density advantages over Intel/AMD alternatives for Web applications. (Intel Centurion) Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 5:53 AM More on ARM (ARMH) Q2: Demand for ARM's chips outstrips the industry, allowing it to remain confident. While the the Q4 "royalty uptick" might not be "what we usually see," ARM says, "there is strong license momentum, which is why we are confirming the overall picture for the full year." The WSJ has the early and mainly positive analyst reaction. 2 Comments [Earnings, On the Move]

- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 1:11 PM Intel (INTC) will reportedly launch its next-gen Haswell CPUs in April 2013. Haswell, like the recently-launched Ivy Bridge, will use a 22nm manufacturing process, but promises major improvements in power consumption and integration. That should help Intel better compete with ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs in the Windows and Android tablet markets - ARM solutions draw less power than Ivy Bridge, and are being used in thinner/lighter tablets. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 29, 2012, 2:18 PM H-P (HPQ) says it won't initially launch ARM-based (ARMH) Windows RT (MSFT) tablets, and will focus on selling Intel (INTC) and AMD-based Windows 8 gear. H-P claims the decision was influenced by customer input, and suggests the backwards compatibility of Intel/AMD systems with existing Windows apps was a factor. Last week, the ARM version of Microsoft Surface - thinner, lighter, and probably less expensive - received more attention than the Intel version. (previous) 10 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 22, 2012, 4:33 PM Don't think of ARM (ARMH) as a mere CPU core developer. Shipments of chips containing ARM's Mali graphics processor (GPU) cores are expected to double this year to 100M, according to marketing exec Kevin Smith. Smith adds Mali cores are now found in 70% of "graphics-enabled" HDTVs, 50% of Android tablets, and 20% of Android phones. Mali competes with GPU cores from Imagination (IGNMF.PK), which are used in Apple's A5 and many other mobile processors. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 12:59 PM As part of its Project Moonshot initiative to build the kind of cheap, dense, energy-efficient servers increasingly used to deliver Internet/cloud services, H-P (HPQ) introduces a server system called Gemini. Unlike traditional standalone servers, Gemini uses a combination of "server cartridges" containing low-power Intel (INTC) "Centerton" Atom CPUs, and shared networking, storage, and power/cooling resources. Project Moonshot will also feature ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs. (ZDNet) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 7:39 PM More on Microsoft Surface: The tablet features a 10.6" display, uses Corning's (GLW) Gorilla Glass, and comes with Office built-in. Microsoft has also developed a cover that doubles as a keyboard with touchpad, thereby allowing Surface to shift into PC mode. One version will be sold with an ARM-based (ARMH) processor, while a somewhat thicker/heavier version will feature an Intel (INTC) Core i5 processor and support existing Windows apps. (live blog) 66 Comments [Tech, Breaking News]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 5:10 PM Mike Bell, the head of Intel's (INTC) mobile processor efforts, talks a tough game regarding his company's ability to compete with incumbents selling processors featuring ARM (ARMH) CPU cores. In addition to pointing to benchmarks that show phones running on Intel's Medfield processors to be competitive with rivals, Bell argues Intel's manufacturing resources (most rivals rely on foundries such as TSM) and focus on high-end multimedia features will give it an edge. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 9:12 AM Microsoft (MSFT) will unveil plans to make its own Windows 8 tablets at a much-speculated L.A. event on Monday, sources tell The Wrap and AllThingsD. It's claimed Microsoft, like Google, has decided it needs its own no-compromise hardware to compete with Apple (AAPL), and that it could sell both ARM-based (ARMH) and Intel/AMD tablets. The move could rankle some PC OEMs, especially given reports Microsoft will charge huge license fees for Windows 8 tablets. 19 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 2:51 PM AMD plans to integrate ARM's (ARMH) TrustZone security technology within future CPUs. The tie-up comes even though ARM-based CPUs are set to challenge AMD in the PC and server markets. Yesterday, AMD announced an initiative with ARM, Texas Instruments (TXN), and others to create a common programming model for CPUs and graphics processors - the initiative could help AMD better compete against Intel (INTC) if developers embrace it. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 7:38 PM After talking with OEMs at Computex, VR-Zone reports Microsoft (MSFT) plans to typically charge a license fee of $85 for copies of Windows RT, the version of Windows 8 specifically written for ARM-based (ARMH) processors and expected to be used in many tablets. This guarantees Android (GOOG) tablets will have a pricing edge over Windows rivals, and that any pricing edge over the iPad (AAPL) will be minimal even if iPad Mini rumors don't hold up. Investor Llew: Looks like the pessimism took over entirely today. It's hitting a short term support at $12.40. Just FYI, I sold Apr $12 Puts at 12 Cents. -
Investor Llew: I just made a $1,000 this week solely on $NVDA's $12 April Put which is now $0.04 cheaper. By Apr Exp, i will make another $2k. Easy Peasy

Ashraf Eassa: @ Jonathan - Agreed. The risk/reward for shorting a $20B company that makes <$300M/yr in net income @ mid double digit growth rate is good. -
Ashraf Eassa: Also, I like that there is essentially zero buyout risk for this one.

Covered $AMCC short @ $7.64. +$1.69. Too dangerous to hold while analysts still drinking $ARMH server kool-aid. - View all 0 replies

Ashraf Eassa: The stock is holding 20 day SMA thanks to the sell-side upgrades. Someone had to do damage control after East retired, right?

$ARMH up on BofA/Merrill Lynch upgrade to 'buy' and PT of $52. This analyst was bearish on $ARMH in the $20's. - View all 2 replies

Eassa: Yeah, and that pop will probably fizzle as it always has lately on upgrades. If I'm wrong, then I will load up more on my short position. -
Ashraf Eassa: It already fizzled, my friend. Up on my add to the short this morning.

$ARMH just gained 3+ years worth of net income in market cap. How is this anything remotely close to reasonable? - View all 6 replies

Buffet_or_Broke: I would love to short AMZN as a stock, but I can't bring myself to short the company. -
Bill Maurer: Lately, the only smart time to short $AMZN has been to short it at 3:50-4:00 the day of earnings, cover after the report, then go long again

Garthilk: Intel will pay you a dividend right up to the point when they stop. Meanwhile the price continues down. -
Ashraf Eassa: Garthilk, Intel's business is strong. I have no doubts that if Intel changes its dividend policy, it will be to increase the current payout.

$INTC makes more in 1 week than $ARMH makes in 52 weeks. Yet ARMH is ~1/6th of $INTC's market cap. Make sense? - View all 10 replies

Sal Marvasti: Bill is correct, if it was not for buybacks Intel metrics would be dropping. Just saw another pc is dead video on cnn. The best quote -
Ashraf Eassa: Uh, if you look at Intel's net income (not EPS, NET INCOME) over the last 5 years, you will see a nice uptrend. 2012 is exception, not rule.

$ARMH is not as bearish on $INTC as the media is. It is a shame that $ARMH is so overpriced, otherwise I would own it. - View all 8 replies

Sal Marvasti: that why i would not short them. Shorting someone like Nvidia at $13.70 is more reasonable, as they have less demand for their shares. -
Sal Marvasti: don't short momentum stocks where demand is greater than supply.
