- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 6:05 PM More on Intel and ARM: Nomura notes that in spite of the presence of ARM-based Windows 8 models, Intel/AMD hardware still dominates at Computex (ed: ARM systems require more R&D work, and OEM experience at this point is limited). However, Williams Financial is worried the ~$1,000 price points of many Intel-based ultrabooks are hurting consumer and OEM interest, and one OEM told Topeka Capital "ultrabook programs are running a bit below expectations." - Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 5:52 PM As Nvidia and Asus demo an ARM-based (ARMH) Windows 8 tablet at Computex, Taiwan's MiTAC is announcing the first generally-available ARM server; like Dell's (DELL) ARM servers, which are available only to select customers, MiTAC's system relies on Marvell's (MRVL) Armada processors. ARM has set a goal of taking 5%-10% of the server CPU market, which is dominated by Intel's (INTC) Xeon and (to a lesser extent) AMD's Opteron chips, by 2016 Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 9:17 AM As PC OEMs unleash a flood of Windows 8 (MSFT) hardware at Taiwan's Computex, Intel (INTC) is announcing deals with touch panel suppliers Cando, HannsTouch, TPK, and Wintek to guarantee an adequate supply of ultrabook touch panels over the next 12 months. Like Intel's other ultrabook investments, the company is motivated both by an interest in lowering its dependence on the MacBook Air (and thus Apple's whims), and dealing with the challenge posed by ARM-based (ARMH) systems. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, May 31, 2012, 6:34 PM Though ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs will take share from Intel (INTC) in the notebook and server markets, and Intel will return the favor in mobile devices, the net impact on Intel's bottom line won't be significant, argues Evercore's Patrick Wang, who maintains an Equal-weight rating. A 5% market share change in the tablet, smartphone, and low-end notebook markets affects Intel's EPS by less than 1%, Wang estimates. Thus, Intel's main challenge is price erosion, not share losses to ARM. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 6:59 PM Marvell (MRVL) boasts its Armada XP processors are the ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs powering Dell's just-announced Copper servers. A Dell (DELL) exec says the company has been working with Marvell for over a year. ARM server CPUs offer lower power consumption and higher densities than traditional Intel (INTC) and AMD offerings, but performance and software compatibility remain near-term stumbling blocks. AMCC is also targeting this space. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 5:46 PM Dell (DELL), which has long been testing servers running on ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs, has officially declared its support for them. Dell adds it's already delivering ARM servers to select customers, and will support the development of a software ecosystem for the platform (currently a weak link). Dell, the world's #3 server vendor, is a huge buyer of Intel's (INTC) Xeon server CPUs, and also supports AMD's Opteron. H-P (HPQ) threw its weight behind ARM servers last November. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, May 25, 2012, 4:47 PM ARM (ARMH) can hold its own against Intel (INTC) as the latter company enters the mobile app processor market, argues UBS' Gareth Jenkins, who's upgrading shares to Buy. Among Jenkins' arguments: 75% of the top smartphone apps are specifically written with ARM-based processors in mind; the company continues to innovate with solutions such as its big.LITTLE architecture; and Intel has to compete with 15+ app processor vendors (most of whom use ARM CPU cores). - Friday, May 25, 2012, 11:38 AM Neowin.net provides details about Dell's (DELL) first Windows 8 (MSFT) tablet. The specs appear ho-hum: a 10.1" display, a dual-core Intel (INTC) Clover Trail CPU with integrated graphics; dual cameras; a solid-state drive; and a thickness of 0.4" (the new iPad is at 0.37") . Expect H-P, Nokia, and about a dozen or so Asian OEMs to launch similar hardware, only with some models sporting ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs instead. (more on Windows 8) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 12:41 PM An L.A. Times article about a 2010 game-development contract between Activision (ATVI) and developer Bungie suggest the next Xbox (MSFT) will be called the Xbox 720, and arrive in fall 2013. Past rumors (I, II, III) have suggested the device will sport an ARM-based (ARMH) CPU and AMD graphics processor, and will be accompanied by a low-end model focused on Kinect play. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, May 18, 2012, 6:52 PM As Microsoft (MSFT) and PC OEMs hope the fall release of Windows 8 systems featuring ARM-based (ARMH) processors will give their PC/tablet sales a lift, the OEMs are reportedly struggling to reach tablet price points they consider necessary to compete with the iPad (AAPL) and Kindle Fire (AMZN), due to Microsoft's insistence on a $90-$100 Windows license fee. Concerns also exist about the software compatibility issues facing ARM-based hardware. 20 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 14, 2012, 12:37 PM The first Windows 8 (MSFT) tablets sporting Intel (INTC) CPUs will arrive in November, sources tell CNET. It's added the devices will use Intel's upcoming Clover Trail Atom CPUs, and over half will be PC/tablet hybrids. A successful launch could give a lift to touchscreen controller vendors such as ATML, CY, and SYNA. A prior report claimed both Intel and ARM-based (ARMH) Windows 8 hardware will arrive in October. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 10, 2012, 10:24 AM ARM (ARMH +3.2%) gets a boost from Bernstein's Pierre Ferragu, who raises his rating on the stock to Market Perform and asserts it is now fairly valued. Ferragu thinks ARM eventually can become a “credible alternative” to Intel (INTC) at the low-end PC and niche server markets, but is concerned about Intel's threat to ARM’s dominance in mobile phones and tablets. 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas, On the Move]
- Monday, May 7, 2012, 12:56 PM Piper's Gus Richard thinks ARM (ARMH) is starting to see higher royalty rates on chips that contain its CPU cores. Richard believes the rate for ARM's Cortex A9 cores, which recently began ramping, is a relatively high 1.5%, while the rate for the cutting-edge Cortex A15 is 2.5%. The Cortex A7, which ARM encourages pairing with the A15, is also believed to be 1.5%. However, Richard is worried about "push back" over the A15's rate - could that open the door for MIPS? 3 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 6:52 PM Unhappy with weak demand for high-end Android tablets, PC OEMs such as Dell (DELL), H-P (HPQ), and Acer are focusing their R&D resources on developing Windows 8 (MSFT) products, reports Digitimes. The same goes for leading contract manufacturer Compal. The first ARM-based (ARMH) tablets running Windows 8, which has received good early reviews, are due in October. 8 Comments [Tech]

ARM's hopes for further penetrating this market hinge on expanding its microcontroller share, which is currently around 10%, via its Cortex-M and Cortex-M0+ cores. (previous) (Q1) Comment! [Tech]

Ashraf Eassa: @ Jonathan - Agreed. The risk/reward for shorting a $20B company that makes <$300M/yr in net income @ mid double digit growth rate is good. -
Ashraf Eassa: Also, I like that there is essentially zero buyout risk for this one.

$INTC makes more in 1 week than $ARMH makes in 52 weeks. Yet ARMH is ~1/6th of $INTC's market cap. Make sense? - View all 10 replies

Sal Marvasti: Bill is correct, if it was not for buybacks Intel metrics would be dropping. Just saw another pc is dead video on cnn. The best quote -
Ashraf Eassa: Uh, if you look at Intel's net income (not EPS, NET INCOME) over the last 5 years, you will see a nice uptrend. 2012 is exception, not rule.

$ARMH is not as bearish on $INTC as the media is. It is a shame that $ARMH is so overpriced, otherwise I would own it. - View all 8 replies

Sal Marvasti: that why i would not short them. Shorting someone like Nvidia at $13.70 is more reasonable, as they have less demand for their shares. -
Sal Marvasti: don't short momentum stocks where demand is greater than supply.
