- Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 12:58 PM AnandTech provides a detailed review of Lava's Xolo X900, the first smartphone to feature an Intel (INTC) Medfield Atom CPU, and it mostly likes what it sees. The phone's battery life is decent, in spite of fears to the contrary, and its performance is better than that of most benchmarked devices. However, it's added Intel needs to do more to get OEMs wedded to ARM-based (ARMH) processors to defect. Comment! [Tech]

Losers: ICON -14%. BIDU -6%. GSK -3%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 9:54 AM More on ARM's (ARMH -5.4%) Q1: Shipments of ARM-based chips for mobile devices were flat Y/Y (+10% in Q4), while shipments for other products rose only 15% (+40% in Q4). This is probably leading to fears Q2 royalty revenue (based on Q1 shipments) will be light, and could be mildly troubling for the chip industry. However, license revenue remains strong (+20% Y/Y), and ARM expects 2012 revenue to be in-line with expectations. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

- Friday, April 20, 2012, 1:44 PM The first smartphone featuring an Intel (INTC) Medfield Atom processor will go on sale on Monday, and will be made by India's Lava. Called the Xolo X900, the Android device will feature a 1.6GHz. Atom Z2460 chip, which has fared well in benchmarks. Other Medfield-based phones are on the way, though ARM-based (ARMH) processors (I, II, III) will maintain a dominant share of the smartphone processor market over the near-term. 14 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 9:50 AM Microsoft (MSFT) discloses Windows 8 will come in 3 editions: Windows 8 (consumer-oriented), Windows 8 Pro (meant for business users and enthusiasts), and Windows RT (meant for systems running ARM-based CPUs). Windows 7, by contrast, is available in 6 editions. Early feedback on Windows 8, due this fall, has largely been positive; PC makers are hoping it will finally let them sell legit rivals to the iPad. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, April 16, 2012, 12:31 PM AMD is one of the companies interested in acquiring MIPS Technologies (MIPS -2.7%), according to BSN, now that the #2 developer of CPU core designs (behind market colossus ARMH) is on the block. Buying MIPS would help AMD reduce its PC dependence, and also fit into its plans to develop chips featuring 3rd-party IP. However, BSN thinks CFO Thomas Seifert, the man said to "effectively run" AMD, could stand in the way. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 1:29 PM Intel (INTC) has introduced its Centerton CPU, the first chip for its Atom processor line meant specifically for servers. With a max draw of 6W, the Centerton consumes far less power than Intel's mainstay Xeon server chips, making it well-suited for "web-scale" deployments in which high density and low power are paramount. Intel will face competition in this space from ARM-based (ARMH) CPUs, and from AMD, which just bought low-power server specialist SeaMicro. 9 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 9:19 AM Needham's Rajvindra Gill slashes his Q2 estimates for Atmel (ATML) due to concerns about "ongoing excess inventory" for microcontrollers used in industrial products (possibly a negative for other microcontroller vendors, such as MCHP and FSL), as well as soft demand for ARM-based (ARMH) microcontrollers and an ongoing inventory overhang for Android tablets. However, Gill is optimistic about the impact of Windows 8 hardware on 2H sales. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 9:17 AM ARM (ARMH) has formed a JV with smart card giant Gemalto and security tech firm Giesecke & Devrient that will create a "common security standard" for mobile devices. The JV, which will make use of ARM's TrustZone platform,is another example of how ARM has built a developer and technology ecosystem around its CPU core designs, one that will make it tough rivals such as Intel (INTC) to threaten its mobile dominance. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, April 2, 2012, 6:13 PM Is Samsung (SSNLF.PK) planning to take on Intel (INTC) and AMD in the server CPU market? The company has hired several prominent AMD engineers and execs, and an exec at startup Calxeda, which is developing ARM-based (ARMH) server CPUs for H-P, sees the moves as evidence a rival product is in the works. Samsung has said it will boost its R&D and capex 27% this year, with processors an area of focus. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 23, 2012, 2:43 PM Nvidia's (NVDA) notebook graphics chief downplays the graphics improvements delivered by Intel's (INTC) Ivy Bridge processors, arguing Nvidia's latest GPUs deliver major improvements of their own. He also sees the notebook market splitting between thin-and-light MacBook Air-type models, many of which will use ARM (ARMH) chips such as Nvidia's Tegra, and high-end systems running on Intel's Haswell. Conventional "cheap and ugly" machines will lose out. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 21, 2012, 8:32 AM ARM Holdings (ARMH +0.75%) names John Buchanan as Chairman to replace the retiring Doug Dunn on May 3. Buchanan is Chairman of Smith & Nephew and Vice Chairman of Vodafone. Comment! [Tech, M&A]

coolkennylee: This will trade over $30 in the coming weeks! Oversold and undervalued! -
Alex Filonov: Maybe. I sold short $24 puts because I don't mind buying stock for $23. And because I think they'll expire worthless.
