Royalty/chip was 7.1 cents, up slightly Q/Q. 25 new CPU licenses, down slightly from Q3's 28. Cortex CPUs (generate higher royalties) accounted for 23% of chips, up from 13% a year ago. ARMH +4.6%. - Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 9:12 AM The next Xbox (MSFT) will arrive in the fall of 2013, and feature a 6000-series AMD Radeon graphics processor, according to IGN's sources. The processor is said to be ~6x as powerful as the one in the Xbox 360, but only slightly more powerful than the one in the Wii U. Prior rumors (I, II) have claimed the next Xbox will feature an ARM-based (ARMH) CPU, and will arrive in two models. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 23, 2012, 11:50 AM LSI has bought a license for ARM's (ARMH) high-end Cortex-A15 processor cores. The Cortex-A15 is considerably more powerful (and carries higher royalties) than the ARM11 cores used in many LSI chips, and LSI's stated intention of using the cores in networking chips suggests they could displace IBM's PowerPC cores in its Axxia processor line. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, January 13, 2012, 5:48 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is merging its mid-range Bada OS with Intel's (INTC) Tizen platform, launched this fall in partnership with Samsung and others. The news adds to the momentum generated this week by Intel's mobile division, though it remains to be seen whether Samsung, which currently relies on home-grown and third-party ARM-based (ARMH) mobile processors, will adopt Intel's chips for its smartphones. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, January 12, 2012, 11:43 AM Citi's Glen Yeung is encouraged by Intel's (INTC) recent deals (I, II) with Motorola and Lenovo for its latest Atom chips, code-named Medfield, given they provide Intel with some much-needed momentum in the smartphone/tablet space. Yeung was impressed the performance of a prototype phone relying on Medfield, which faces tough competition from a slew of ARM-based (ARMH) processor lines. (previously) Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, January 11, 2012, 8:08 AM In addition to its deal with Motorola (MMI), Intel (INTC) is also working with Lenovo as it attempts to step up its challenge to ARM's (ARMH) smartphone dominance. Lenovo will launch an Intel-powered K800 in Q2, while Motorola plans to introduce its device in H2. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 11:31 AM MIPS (MIPS +3.2%) rallies for the second day in a row after showing off Ainol Electronics' Novo7 Android tablet at CES. As previously announced, the tablet runs on a processor featuring a MIPS CPU core; the vast majority of rival solutions run on chips featuring ARM (ARMH) cores. At a $100 price point, the device (and the imitators likely to follow) might just be cheap to gain a following. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 9, 2012, 12:29 PM Bernstein initiates coverage of ARM Holdings (ARMH +0.9%) at Underperform, citing overly optimistic assumptions and a misunderstood potential in desktops, laptops and servers. The firm sees better opportunities to go short in 12-18 months, "after the announcement of first commercialized laptops and servers based on ARM." Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, January 6, 2012, 6:04 PM Nomura joins Sterne Agee in expressing concerns about the potential for ARM-based (ARMH) chips to affect Intel's (INTC) PC CPU hegemony, noting that ARM solutions such as Nvidia's (NVDA) Tegra 3 nearly rival the performance of Intel's Atom chips. However, Bernstein is less worried, given ARM's software compatibility issues, and the ability of Intel's Haswell chips to narrow ARM's power consumption edge. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, January 5, 2012, 10:59 AM Marvell (MRVL) announces its ARM-based (ARMH) ARMADA processors have been designed into the latest Google TV (GOOG) hardware, displacing Intel (INTC) chips in the process. Intel stated in October it was shutting down a division that developed Atom chips for the set-top box market. Eric Schmidt has said he expects Google TV to be in the majority of TV sets on sale by summer, though that may prove a tall order. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 4, 2012, 10:16 AM HTC is enthusiastically adopting high-end smartphone CPUs, claims JPMorgan Chase: the firm expects the suddenly-struggling phone vendor to ship devices featuring Nvidia's (NVDA) Tegra 3 and Qualcomm's (QCOM) MSM8960 chips by April. If consumers find some value in all that extra horsepower, it could result in both higher selling prices for chipmakers, and higher royalties for ARM (ARMH) Comment! [Tech]

$ARMH down on the London exchange. More insider selling? Or did they sell during the pump phase and now leaving retail holding the bag? - View all 3 replies

tuoithin: Seems like it's up another 2% again today. Your chance to short if you dare
