- Thursday, May 2, 5:34 PM ARM (ARMH +0.1%) largely missed out on today's rally after GPU core rival Imagination (IGNMF.PK) fell 25.7% in London thanks to a warning. Imagination expects its FY13 (ended in April) licensing revenue to fall 22% Y/Y to £27M due to delayed deal closings, something it blames on "structural and organisational changes" at licensees. FY14 licensing revenue (exc. MIPS) is expected to total £30m- £35m, also below expectations. The damage to ARM was likely limited due to the fact ARM's share gains might be partly responsible for the warning - ARM's Mali GPU core shipments rose 5x Y/Y in Q1, and 3 new licenses were signed (raising the total to 75). - Wednesday, May 1, 1:25 PM ARM's (ARMH +2%) chip royalty rate will rise to 1.5% next year from 1.3% last year, and could approach 2% by 2020, says Canaccord's Matthew Ramsay in an upbeat note that's helping the CPU core giant make new all-time highs. Higher Cortex CPU core and Mali GPU core shipments are lifting ARM's chip royalties, as is the adoption of quad and (in Samsung's case) octa-core mobile processors. Ramsay adds ARM, which saw chip shipments rise 35% Y/Y in Q1, could have a 50% CPU share by 2020, up from a current 32% - if that happens, microcontrollers and other embedded chips will play a big role. Shares trade at a lofty 53x 2013E EPS. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

Premarket gainers: MEMS +50%. SCON +46%. NFLX +24%. VECO +14%. COH +12%. ILMN +10%. ARMH +9%. CZR +8%. STM +6%. AMRN +6%.
Losers: IRWD -10%. RSH -7%. IOC -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, April 23, 6:06 AM More on ARM Holdings (ARMH) Q1: adjusted pretax profit +44% to £89.4M vs consensus of £77.6M. 2.6B ARM-based chips shipped, +35%; mobile chips +25%, embedded +50%, Mali graphics processors surge fivefold. ARM "made an encouraging start to 2013" and it projects FY revenues in line with market expectations, which are £675.8M. Shares +5.9% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, On the Move, Tech]
- Monday, March 25, 1:01 PM Apple (AAPL) "will introduce the first 64-bit ARM-based chip this year," writes Evercore's Patrick Wang. Wang doesn't state which Apple products the chip will go into, but does note the adoption of 64-bit parts will lift ARM's (ARMH +3.4%) royalty rates. He also sees a 2H ramp in chips using ARM's big.LITTLE architecture boosting rates, and talks up the potential of ARM server CPUs from Applied Micro (AMCC -1.5%) and Cavium (CAVM -0.5%) - Wang sees AMCC's X-Gene CPU cementing its early lead in the market. ARM announced its 64-bit Cortex-A50 cores in October. (previous: I, II) 30 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 15, 9:45 AM An upgrade to Buy from Jefferies sends ARM (ARMH +2.9%) to $43. Jefferies' move follows a string of January downgrades that failed to halt the CPU core giant's rise. ARM now trades at 38x 2014E EPS. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 5, 3:25 AM ARM Holdings (ARMH): Q4 adjusted EPS +10% to 4.08 pence, in line with consensus; adjusted pretax profit +16% to £80M vs consensus of £75.6M, revenues +19% to £164.2M vs £152.5M. Starts 2013 with a "robust opportunity pipeline for licensing and a record order backlog." Shares +7.2%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, February 1, 12:07 PM European tech stocks are outperforming following a good day for continental indexes, spurred by decent global PMI data and the U.S. NFP report. In addition to Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent (previous), Nokia (NOK +2.4%), ARM (ARMH +3.5%), STMicroelectronics (STM +4.4%), and NXP (NXPI +2%) are faring well. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 30, 10:13 AM Freescale (FSL +17.4%) roars higher after easily beating Q4 estimates and providing Q1 guidance well above consensus. Sales of microcontrollers (strong uptake for ARM-based designs) and base station power amplifiers (lifted by China's 3G buildout) were healthy, offsetting weakness in network processor, analog/sensor, and automotive IC sales. The results appear a validation of new CEO Gregg Lowe's efforts to narrow Freescale's R&D focus and restructure. Pac Crest thinks margins could rise throughout 2013. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 15, 9:30 AM ARM (ARMH) -5% thanks to a a downgrade to Equal-weight from Morgan Stanley. "It will be difficult for news flow to improve from here, and ARM could still lose sockets here and there," the firm writes: it thinks expectations of mobile computing, micro-server, and telecom infrastructure share gains, and of higher royalty rates thanks to the adoption of its big.LITTLE architecture, are priced in. Piper downgraded ARM yesterday, but shares closed higher nonetheless. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 4:44 PM MIPS discloses it has received an unsolicited bid from CEVA to acquire what will remain of the company after a patent sale to an ARM-led consortium is finished for $75M in cash. That trumps a $60M offer from GPU core developer Imagination (IGNMF.PK). MIPS' board is evaluating the offer. If CEVA's offer wins out, MIPS' CPU core business would complement CEVA's DSP core business, and could also yield synergies for its chip platform business. MIPS halted. CEVA -0.6% AH. (PR) 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 10:05 AM ARM (ARMH -3.4%) has opened lower after Raymond James downgrades shares to Outerperform from Strong Buy - ARM closed near its 52-week high yesterday. Meanwhile, Intel (INTC -2.7%) is lower not only due to H-P's bleak PC and server sales data, but also due to a downgrade to Neutral from UBS, which is worried about the near-term impact of Paul Otellini's May retirement. 13 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, November 5, 2012, 4:34 PM More on Apple/Intel: Apple engineers have "grown confident" their power-efficient ARM-based chips will eventually be powerful enough for Macs, sources tell Bloomberg. Also, hardware engineering chief Bob Mansfield is reportedly interested in creating a more uniform experience between iOS and Mac OS. However, Apple is deemed "unlikely to switch in the next few years." To make a full switch, Apple needs to guarantee backwards-compatibility for existing software, something Microsoft didn't do with Windows RT. ARM (ARMH +2.7%) rallied on the report. 33 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 10:40 AM AppliedMicro (AMCC +26.9%) skies higher following it FQ2 report. Though results were ho-hum, the beaten-down telecom chipmaker guided on its earnings call for FQ3 revenue to rise 8%-12% Q/Q (consensus is for a 7% increase). It also announced a partnership with Red Hat (RHT) and ARM (ARMH) to develop server designs based on AppliedMicro's ARM CPUs. Evercore has added AppliedMicro to its Conviction Buy list, touting the company's backlog, share gains, and declining inventories. Rival PMC-Sierra (PMCS +2.1%) is up a bit. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 1:24 PM Chip stocks are outperforming a little following ARM's (ARMH +11.6%) pleasing Q3 report (I, II), in which the company reported a 16% Y/Y increase in Q2 unit shipments (from which Q3 royalties were derived). Beaten-down PC chip stocks are among the winners: AMD +3.8%. NVDA +2.9%. INTC +1.1%. Earlier today, AMD launched its Vishera desktop CPU line - AMD is counting on the 4 and 8-core CPUs, which are priced aggressively, to help reverse share losses to Intel's Ivy Bridge. Reviewers offer tempered praise. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]

zigazaga: ARM has had plenty of bumps on its relentless climb to today's all-time high. Have you shorted it yet? -
Eassa: And its down another 4.5% on the LSE today so far. This is a major retreat. We'll see how the ADR does today.

I think I know why $ARMH tanked. Will write it up at some point. Hint: the server dream got pushed further into the future. - View all 1 replies

Ashraf Eassa: Bubbles can keep on inflating in this kind of macro environment, but that doesn't change the fact that it is indeed a bubble. -
neobliviscar: AE- Take page from the Whit Tilson NFLX Saga on this one. Being right very far from the right time = does not matter. Made WT look squeeky.
