- Monday, May 13, 11:07 AM More Chinese companies are popping up in Detroit as they prepare for the eventuality of a major Chinese auto manufacturer selling cars in the U.S. For the most part, the firms are flying under the radar, but the numbers are starting to swell. The Detroit Chinese Business Association now has over 100 Chinese-owned businesses in its membership with the largest percentage geared toward supplying the automobile industry. It's a trend to watch for auto suppliers (AXL, ARMH, ALV, BWA, CLC, DAN, FDML, GNTX, JCI, MGA, TEN, TRW, WBC) used to having a home field advantage with the Big Three automakers. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 2, 5:34 PM ARM (ARMH +0.1%) largely missed out on today's rally after GPU core rival Imagination (IGNMF.PK) fell 25.7% in London thanks to a warning. Imagination expects its FY13 (ended in April) licensing revenue to fall 22% Y/Y to £27M due to delayed deal closings, something it blames on "structural and organisational changes" at licensees. FY14 licensing revenue (exc. MIPS) is expected to total £30m- £35m, also below expectations. The damage to ARM was likely limited due to the fact ARM's share gains might be partly responsible for the warning - ARM's Mali GPU core shipments rose 5x Y/Y in Q1, and 3 new licenses were signed (raising the total to 75). - Wednesday, May 1, 1:25 PM ARM's (ARMH +2%) chip royalty rate will rise to 1.5% next year from 1.3% last year, and could approach 2% by 2020, says Canaccord's Matthew Ramsay in an upbeat note that's helping the CPU core giant make new all-time highs. Higher Cortex CPU core and Mali GPU core shipments are lifting ARM's chip royalties, as is the adoption of quad and (in Samsung's case) octa-core mobile processors. Ramsay adds ARM, which saw chip shipments rise 35% Y/Y in Q1, could have a 50% CPU share by 2020, up from a current 32% - if that happens, microcontrollers and other embedded chips will play a big role. Shares trade at a lofty 53x 2013E EPS. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Tuesday, April 23, 6:06 AM More on ARM Holdings (ARMH) Q1: adjusted pretax profit +44% to £89.4M vs consensus of £77.6M. 2.6B ARM-based chips shipped, +35%; mobile chips +25%, embedded +50%, Mali graphics processors surge fivefold. ARM "made an encouraging start to 2013" and it projects FY revenues in line with market expectations, which are £675.8M. Shares +5.9% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, On the Move, Tech]

- Monday, April 8, 11:58 AM H-P (HPQ -0.9%) unveils its first Moonshot system, the fruits of a much-hyped effort to develop the kind of densely-packed, low-power systems many Web/cloud service providers have embraced. The first Moonshot server uses Intel's (INTC) S1200 (Centerton) Atom CPU. 45 of them fit into a small enclosure containing shared power/networking/storage components, and H-P claims 1,800 servers can fit into a rack. AMD and ARM-based (ARMH) servers will arrive later. The likes of Google, Facebook, and Amazon probably won't adopt Moonshot, but some enterprises and service providers hoping to emulate those firms might. 13 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, March 25, 1:01 PM Apple (AAPL) "will introduce the first 64-bit ARM-based chip this year," writes Evercore's Patrick Wang. Wang doesn't state which Apple products the chip will go into, but does note the adoption of 64-bit parts will lift ARM's (ARMH +3.4%) royalty rates. He also sees a 2H ramp in chips using ARM's big.LITTLE architecture boosting rates, and talks up the potential of ARM server CPUs from Applied Micro (AMCC -1.5%) and Cavium (CAVM -0.5%) - Wang sees AMCC's X-Gene CPU cementing its early lead in the market. ARM announced its 64-bit Cortex-A50 cores in October. (previous: I, II) 30 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 22, 5:48 PM Windows RT (MSFT) has "a very bright future," insists Microsoft exec Michael Angiulo, addressing concerns about the ARM-powered (ARMH) OS' viability in the wake of weak sales and industry criticism. Angiulo suggests the performance of future ARM chips will give RT a boost, and actually argues RT's inability to support legacy Windows apps is good for the user experience. The Verge's Aaron Souppouris isn't sold, not after seeing a Windows 8 Pro system running an Intel (INTC) Clover Trail Atom CPU easily outperform RT systems. (Intel Bay Trail) 39 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 19, 7:04 PM Incoming ARM (ARMH) CEO Simon Seagars promises his company will remain the Switzerland of the chip world. "We have 300 licensees ... they rely on the neutrality of our position." He suggests the proliferation of ARM chips that interact with cheap sensors will be a priority. "Low-cost microcontrollers with a wireless interface ... There will be billions of these." William Blair notes Segars has been "groomed for the CEO role," and is well-known in the tech world. (Warren East's retirement) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 19, 4:15 AM ARM Holdings (ARMH) CEO Warren East will retire on July 1 after 12 years in the job and be replaced by company President Simon Seagars, who joined ARM in 1991. East has transformed Arm as CEO, taking it from a company with one processor product line found mainly in mobile phones to a firm with a broad portfolio and 300 semiconductor customers. Arm shares are -0.9% in London. (PR) 3 Comments [Tech, Top Stories, Breaking News]
- Friday, March 15, 9:45 AM An upgrade to Buy from Jefferies sends ARM (ARMH +2.9%) to $43. Jefferies' move follows a string of January downgrades that failed to halt the CPU core giant's rise. ARM now trades at 38x 2014E EPS. 5 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 6, 7:07 PM ARM's (ARMH) CPU cores are going into Baidu's data centers ... and they might also wind up in human stomachs. Marvell (MRVL) says Baidu will use its ARM-based Armada XP server CPUs in systems handling cloud storage services. Meanwhile, Freescale (FSL) has developed an ARM-based microcontroller that measures just 1.9 x 2 mm, and says it's working with customers/partners on "products that can be swallowed." Though ARM mobile and server chips get more press, the company's growing microcontroller share is driving much of its unit growth. (previous) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 5, 5:09 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) is the latest ARM CPU supplier for H-P's (HPQ) Project Moonshot, which aims to create ultra-dense, low-power servers that will appeal to the Internet companies now driving industry growth. TI's chips will use ARM's (ARMH) high-end Cortex-A15 cores, and be based on its KeyStone architecture. The tie-up drives home TI's commitment to ARM processors, in spite of its retreat from the mobile processor space. (more on ARM servers) Comment! [Tech]
