- Wednesday, May 15, 1:51 PM Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but a surprising 44% of consumers responding to a survey on the impact of an online sales tax say they will buy less items online if the legislation is passed into law. The number rises to 75% for the 18-year to 25-year old demographic (ZUMZ, ANF, URBN, ARO, BKE, VRA). Though seemingly a bad development for Amazon (AMZN -0.6%) and eBay (EBAY), many retail analysts thinks those shopping habits are pretty hard to break. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 10:47 AM More on Aeropostale (ARO +6.5%) ( previous ): Shares are flying higher off of a strong upgrade from BMO Capital to etch out new highs for the year. The take from the firm is a drastic reversal from Goldman Sachs' dour outlook from just a month ago, but also factors in the success of spring fashion lines. The company has also been lauded by IT experts as a retailer that may be ahead of the pack with its mobile site, apps, and in-store tablet kiosks set to help it deliver results. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 7:23 AM BMO Capital upgrades Aeropostale (ARO) to Outperform from Market Perform on its view the retailer has a number of sales drivers working for it including a strong spring assortment and new store format. The price target on shares is lifted to $20 by the firm. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 22, 11:33 AM It smells like teen spending, according to data from a Piper Jaffray survey. Improvements in both current fashion spending by teenagers and an intention to spend more in the future cuts across income levels and genders. If the spending upturn pans out, it's good news for the sector. Teen-focused: Aeropostale (ARO -2.8%), Rue 21 (RUE -2.1%), Zumiez (ZUMZ -1.8%), Wet Seal (WTSLA -2.6%), Vera Bradley (VRA -0.9%), Body Central (BODY -1.5%), Buckle (BKE -1.7%), American Eagle Outfitter (AEO -0.2%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -1.2%), Express (EXPR -1.8%). (full Piper Jaffray report) Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 10, 11:36 AM More on Goldman's Aeropostale (ARO -1.1%) downgrade: Sell from Neutral and 25% downside risk to price reflects "a shift in the competitive landscape," challenging turnaround initiatives, and "protracted comp pressures." Goldman notes that "investors are [not] factoring in the complexity of [ARO's] turnaround endeavor." Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 10, 6:36 AM Goldman Sachs downgrades Aeropostale (ARO) to a Sell rating and lowers its price target to $10. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, April 2, 12:19 PM Barclays initiates coverage on a number of major retailers, lining up Limited Brands (LTD +2.1%), American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.9%), and Gap (GPS +1.5%) with Overweight ratings. The investment firm is less sure about Fossil (FOSL +0.8%), Finish Line (FINL +1.1%), and Aeropostale (ARO +0.1%) - all rated as Equal Weight - while Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF -0.2%) looks unappealing and is tagged at Underweight. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 1, 2:40 PM Analysts think the colder March weather this year could hurt retailers that sell clothing to kids and teenagers as family shopping takes a backseat. Though the spring selling season could still pick up steam in April despite the slow start, retailers such as American Eagle (AEO -1.4%), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +0.1%), Gap (GPS -0.8%), Aeropostale (ARO -3.2%), and Children's Place (PLCE +0.1%) that depend on mall traffic have a lot of ground to make up. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 2:50 PM Aeropostale (ARO -1.8%) fails in attempt to win dismissal of a shareholder lawsuit. A district judge says there is a "strong inference" that the retailer's CEO and CFO painted a far too "rosy" picture during 2011 when the company was "in full panic mode" thanks to a "huge merchandising mistake." Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 21, 2:14 PM Aeropostale (ARO -3.3%) plans to open 60 P.S. kids stores in FY13 after the concept beat the performance of rival children-oriented stores. During a recent earnings call, CEO Thomas Johnson said that over time the company might open 500 P.S. stores. Should Gap (GPS -1.8%) be worried? (transcript) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 10:34 AM Retail buzz: Aeropostale (ARO +3%) looks attractive to P-E firms, according to Wall Street analysts. The retailer generates plenty of cash flow and is relatively debt-free. With current management seen as under-performing a bit, a takeover offer of as much as $20 a share (45% premium) could come down the pike. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, March 15, 9:27 AM Digging into Aeropostale's (ARO) results: The company's online business only staved off a single percentage point of the retailer's overall 8% drop in comparable store sales in Q4. E-commerce growth was especially poor considering the new GoJane business was lumped into the total. ARO -7.1% premarket. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]

ARO -6%. 6 Comments [On the Move] - Thursday, March 14, 5:22 PM More on Aeropostale (ARO): Q4 beats on all counts despite a slight decline in total sales Y/Y. Net profit swung to a loss as the apparel retailer racked up higher impairment charges and weaker sales during its critcial holiday selling season. The company also issued Q1 guidance sharply below Street expectations, projecting a quarterly loss of $0.15 - $0.20 per share, while analysts had predicted a profit of $0.08. The company blames the weak guidance on margin pressures from holiday carryover inventory, plus the impact of a weak macroeconomic environment. Shares -6.5% AH. Comment! [Earnings, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 14, 4:25 PM Aeropostale (ARO): Q4 EPS of $0.24 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $797.7M (-1% Y/Y) beats by $18.04M. Shares -6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move]
