Ashland Could Be a Play [view article]
Yup. Aware of that deal and all the other acquisitions the company's made to diversify itself out of oil. There' more to hammering than just the HPC deal, though. There's a lack of confidence in management, for one thing ... Reply
Ashland Could Be a Play [view article]
The reason the stock has gotten hammered has to do with one thing, and one thing only: they've proposed a huge acquisition of HPC. I'm very surprised you didn't mention it. Were/are you aware of the deal? ReplyAshland Could Be a Play [view article]

Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
The dollar, like all other fiat currencies that have ever been invented, has a useful lifecycle less than infinity. It is created, used properly for awhile, eventually taken advantage of through debasement and ultimately abandoned and reviled. We are now at the end of the take advantage of via debasement portion of the cycle. Buy physical gold if you have even a lick of common sense. Buy some silver too. Preferred stock is senior to common stock and junior to bonds. If the government takes over Fannie and Freddie, the common will almost certainly go to zero, very likely that preferred stock will do the same. Bond holders will likely remain whole and, in effect, hold treasuries. What a disaster for capitalism. National debt will instantaneously double. Will the value of the dollar be cut in half? Almost certainly no, but it will fall further immediately.

why guaranty the old debt and bail out the street/CDS sellers -- just expand FHA/ginnie mae so new mortgages will be made! ReplyWall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
In an administration that has prided itself in not overseeing anything, we now are pleading for oversight. What a joke this bunch of blind men is. Does anyone believe that we need more Enrons, World Coms, and now the entire financial system. Please plea for them to just put their heads in the sand and await someone to comein and straighten out this mess. It is Iraq all over again. ReplyWall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News [view article]
If Congress does not act Big Ben can always blame them for the ultimate meltdown in the I bank structure. This is just gamesmanship. Any "standards" would have to be phased in very slowly and thus have no effect on the current situation. The I banks have so much bad debt they will melt with or without FRB oversight. ReplyMoody’s: Negative Outlook for U.S. Chemicals Companies [view article]
In addition to the massively negative impact of soaring oil and gas prices on DuPont, two of the major markets for this old chemical conglomerate have cratered--housing and autos. Of even greater negative significance is the fact the same bumbling CEO and his Leadership-LITE TEAM remain intractably embedded in the executive suites of Fortress Wilmington! ...funfun.. Is this a buy or a sell? ReplyStocks That Ben Graham Would Like Here [view article]
I bought KELYA and ARCC recently and i have had ASH for a while, glad to see them in a list of presumed "Graham picks", which confirms somehow my own due diligence on them. I sold ASH because i think the company has serious issues in management strategies but i could reconsider a buy at present levels as this, like many of the companies of the list, had been way too beaten down. I agree on the fact that face accounting numbers are only one side of the coin, and many of those companies are down for a reason, beside overall market direction. Still, i think there is value that is neglected when the market overreact and i wait to see if this could be again an example. ReplyStocks That Ben Graham Would Like Here [view article]
CDI Corporation have some issues that I believe will impact on their long term growth and share performance. Take a look at the facts on cdicorp.info and form your own opinion on their ethics, and their business practices. Consider the impact of these issues on their business growth and business model. These issues include: breach of franchise contracts, misrepresentation for years, questionable affidavit statements, questionable Sarbanes-Oxley reporting and more.... I still can't believe people use accounting numbers at face value. I used to follow OSG on the debt side and it's earnings and cash flow were highly dependent on the tanker market -- it was feast or famine at times. It just goes to show why people need to be careful about accounting numbers. It's just a starting point in the analysis. Reply
