- Wednesday, May 22, 11:26 AM Unipixel (UNXL +2.4%) is reiterated a Buy by Cowen & Co.'s Rob Stone who calls Friday's 26% plunge overdone. "It is logical for the PC OEM partner to delay a new product launch within months of an operating system update," he writes. Addressing Atmel (ATML -0.1%), Stone says the "competitive landscape appears unchanged." 3 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, May 13, 2:45 PM UniPixel (UNXL -1.8%) is down, but off its morning lows, after Barron's argues investors should take a cautious approach to the high-flyer. While noting the potential of UniPixel's UniBoss touchscreen film to replace traditional ITO touchscreen tech, the paper also notes the presence of rival film solutions from Atmel (ATML) and Fuji, and discusses the failure of UniPixel's TMOS display panel and fingerprint-resistant film technologies to catch on. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 1, 4:08 PM Atmel (ATML): Q1 EPS of $0.03 in-line. Revenue of $329.1M beats by $7.75M. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

- Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). (Chinese S4 teardown) (Galaxy S III teardown) (also) 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, April 26, 3:52 PM Atmel (ATML +5.1%) rallies strongly after touch controller rival Synaptics (SYNA +9%) delivers blowout FQ2 (March quarter) results thanks to a 57% Y/Y increase in mobile-related sales, and offers very strong FQ3 guidance. During its earnings call, Synaptics noted its controllers have been designed into the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC One, Sony's Xperia Z, and the BlackBerry Z10 - Atmel is also an S4 supplier. UniPixel (UNXL +2.9%) might also be up in sympathy - Synaptics named UniPixel as one of the metal mesh touch sensor firms it's working with. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, April 24, 1:31 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV is a superb phone, if one can cope with a cheap plastic feel and too many gimmicks. That seems to be the consensus from the first full reviews. The Verge praises the S IV's display, camera, and performance, but still considers the HTC One a better bet. "The Galaxy S4 is fast and impressive, but it's also noisy and complex." TechCrunch and Gizmodo deliver similar takes. But others (I, II) make the case that more is ultimately better (this mindset has worked for Samsung thus far). The reviews arrive as Sprint and T-Mobile state their S IV launches will be delayed due to inventory issues. Key suppliers: QCOM, BRCM, SYNA, PANL, ATML, RFMD, TQNT. (previous) 23 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, April 3, 1:03 PM An upgrade to Buy from FBR fails to stop Atmel (ATML -3.6%) from selling off after the chipmaker announced the resignation of its CFO and favorably narrowed its Q1 guidance. Analyst Christopher Rollans thinks "the Street underestimates all or a portion" of several catalysts, including touch sensor hub opportunities, Galaxy S IV sales, a "cyclical recovery" in the microcontroller market, higher Windows 8 touchscreen attach rates, and growing XSense sensor demand (previous) in 2H. Rivals Synaptics (SYNA -4.7%) and Cypress (CY -1.8%) are also underperforming. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 3, 11:08 AM After selling off sharply over the last few trading days, UniPixel (UNXL +18.2%) is skyrocketing today. Yesterday evening, SA contributor Ivan Jimenez argued both UniPixel's UniBoss metal touch sensor tech and rival Atmel's (ATML -1.1%) XSense sensors have the potential to take share from traditional ITO sensors: UniBoss is seen having an edge in price, and XSense in transparency and thickness. 44% of UniPixel's float was shorted as of March 15. 10 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 2, 4:18 PM Atmel (ATML) -3% AH after announcing CFO Stephen Cumming has resigned. Steve Skaggs, Atmel's SVP of corporate strategy, has been named interim CFO, and a search has begun for a full-time replacement. Atmel is also raising its Q1 revenue guidance range to $318M-$328M from a prior $311M-$328M; the consensus stands at $320.7M. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Monday, March 18, 4:39 PM Synaptics' (SYNA +2.1%) Samsung Galaxy S IV design win could boost its 2012 revenue and EPS by $100M-$120M and $0.50-$1, thinks Needham, which has upgraded shares to Buy. The firm thinks Synaptics' Hover tech, which enables the S IV's touch-free gestures, allowed the company's touch controller to beat out that of sensor hub supplier Atmel (ATML). Needham adds Synaptics has "gained significant share" with Nokia, BlackBerry, HTC, LG, and Sony, while maintaining a dominant position with Huawei and ZTE. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 15, 1:38 PM A Chinese site has already torn down a local version of Samsung's Galaxy S IV. Discovered parts include a Qualcomm (QCOM) 3G baseband chip, an Intel (INTC) baseband chip and RF transceiver, TriQuint (TQNT) and Skyworks (SWKS) power amplifiers, Synaptics (SYNA) and Atmel (ATML) controllers, and a Broadcom (BRCM) GPS receiver. A Qualcomm baseband/app processor is expected in the U.S. version. RBC thinks thinks 70M S IV units could be sold this year, and sees Broadcom (NFC chip and a combo chip with high-speed Wi-Fi to go with the GPS chip) and Maxim (MXIM - power management and infrared chips) benefiting. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 13, 2:07 PM An upgrade to Buy from SunTrust Robinson leads Atmel (ATML +3.7%) to Outperform. The upgrade comes a few days after Atmlel announced it's acquiring IDT's (IDTI) smart meter chip business - products include a system-on-chip solution and an analog front end - for an undisclosed sum. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 26, 12:07 PM A downgrade to Market Perform from FBR is pressuring Atmel (ATML -2.3%) shares. The firm is worried about valuation and soft PC touchscreen controller sales - sales of touch-enabled Windows 8 hardware have underwhelmed thus far, but Microsoft, Intel, and OEMs are committed to growing penetration rates. Rival Cypress (CY +2.4%), which just announced its controllers are used in the 2013 Toyota Avalon, is heading in the opposite direction. Update: FBR is also worried about a transition to cheaper, single-chip, PC touch controller solutions, and Atmel's lack of an in-cell controller. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 19, 11:22 AM Touchscreen controller firms Cypress Semi (CY +5.5%) and Atmel (ATML +1.9%) rally after Needham's Rajvindra Gill upgrades shares to Buy. Cypress is down ~50% since Needham's Jan. '12 downgrade, Gill points out, and the chipmaker will benefit from a restructuring, Chinese phone exposure, a strong e-reader position, and a pickup in telecom equipment SRAM demand. He expects Atmel to benefit from touch notebook demand, improving margins, a possible Samsung Galaxy S IV win, and its xSense touchscreen tech. Rival Synaptics (SYNA +2%) is also up. Comment!
