Friday, June 14, 1:57 PM Atmel (ATML +1%) settles its 2-year-old microcontroller patent dispute with Infineon (IFNNY.PK). Atmel will pay Infineon an undisclosed sum, and the chipmakers have agreed to a "broad patent cross license." (PR) Comment! [Tech]
Wednesday, June 12, 11:47 AM Maxim joins JPMorgan and Susquehanna in reporting of Galaxy S4 weakness: analyst Ashok Kumar says Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is cutting shipments due to weak sales and rising channel inventory, and that checks indicate consumers are opting for the cheaper Galaxy S III. He thinks touch controller supplier Synaptics (SYNA -2.7%) could be affected; others possibly at risk include ATML, RFMD, BRCM, PANL, TQNT, ANAD, and SWKS. As far as suppliers go, much still depends on how much demand is simply shifting to mid-range phones, or to rival high-end devices such as HTC's One, Sony's Xperia Z, LG's Optimus G, and Lenovo's K900. 4 Comments [Tech]
Tuesday, June 4, 12:05 PM Chip stocks outperform (SOXX +1.4%) after Microchip raises its June quarter guidance, and STMicroelectronics raises its 2013 guidance. Microchip rivals Texas Instruments (TXN +2.6%), Atmel (ATML +3.4%), and Freescale (FSL +2.1%) are among the winners, as is STMicroelectronics rival NXP (NXPI +3.6%). Also, Altera (ALTR +2.5%) is rallying with the help of an upgrade to Buy from Argus, and Intersil (ISIL +2.4%) is benefiting from a bullish coverage launch from Piper. Thursday, May 30, 7:02 PM Galaxy S4 sales will top 20M in Q2 and 80M by year's end, estimates RBC, citing checks indicating strong U.S. demand. If Samsung (SSNLF.PK) pulls that off, it would be on its way to hitting its target of 100M lifetime sales. RBC also expects industry smartphone sales to rise 27% this year to 870M, and 20% in 2014 to 1B+. Meanwhile, a Russian site reports Samsung's June 20 London event will reveal the Galaxy S4 Zoom, a 4.3" phone sporting a 16MP camera with a 10x optical zoom, and the Galaxy S4 Active, a water/dust-proof S4 variant sporting a Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon 600 CPU. In addition to Avago's rivals and Cirrus Logic (previous), big winners include Fairchild (FCS +3.8%), SanDisk (SNDK +2.7%), Spreadtrum (SPRD +7.2%), and InvenSense (INVN +4.9%), as well as touchscreen controller suppliers Synaptics (SYNA +4.3%), Atmel (ATML +6.3%), and Cypress (CY +2.8%). Wednesday, May 29, 5:59 PM UniPixel (UNXL -7.9%) fell hard again today in the absence of major news. Though shares are still up 42% YTD and over 3x from a year ago, they're now down 53% from their April 17 high. Yesterday, Feltl's Jeffrey Schreiner reported rival metal mesh touch sensor developer Atmel (ATML) sees Fujifilm as a "much more significant competitor" than UniPixel. Atmel management told Schreiner the company expects to qualify its Colorado facility for XSense production by the end of May, but that delays have led it to put orders from tier 2/3 clients on hold. "It is logical for the PC OEM partner to delay a new product launch within months of an operating system update," he writes. Saturday, April 27, 11:03 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) managed to get 6 chips in the U.S. version of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S4, per iFixit's teardown: the high-end APQ8064 app processor, a 4G baseband chip, an audio codec chip, an RF transceiver (beating out SIMO), and 2 power management ICs; the U.K. version uses a Snapdragon 600 baseband/app processor. Also found: a MXIM microcontroller, an SIMG video transmitter, a SWKS 2G power amplifier module, a BRCM NFC chip (likely to go with a combo chip), ATML and SYNA touch controllers, and Toshiba (TOSBF.PK) NAND flash (previous). Friday, April 26, 3:52 PM Atmel (ATML +5.1%) rallies strongly after touch controller rival Synaptics (SYNA +9%) delivers blowout FQ2 (March quarter) results thanks to a 57% Y/Y increase in mobile-related sales, and offers very strong FQ3 guidance. During its earnings call, Synaptics noted its controllers have been designed into the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC One, Sony's Xperia Z, and the BlackBerry Z10 - Atmel is also an S4 supplier. Wednesday, April 24, 1:31 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV is a superb phone, if one can cope with a cheap plastic feel and too many gimmicks. That seems to be the consensus from the first full reviews. The Verge praises the S IV's display, camera, and performance, but still considers the HTC One a better bet. "The Galaxy S4 is fast and impressive, but it's also noisy and complex." TechCrunch and Gizmodo deliver similar takes. But others (I, II) make the case that more is ultimately better (this mindset has worked for Samsung thus far). Wednesday, April 3, 1:03 PM An upgrade to Buy from FBR fails to stop Atmel (ATML -3.6%) from selling off after the chipmaker announced the resignation of its CFO and favorably narrowed its Q1 guidance. Analyst Christopher Rollans thinks "the Street underestimates all or a portion" of several catalysts, including touch sensor hub opportunities, Galaxy S IV sales, a "cyclical recovery" in the microcontroller market, higher Windows 8 touchscreen attach rates, and growing XSense sensor demand (previous) in 2H. Wednesday, April 3, 11:08 AM After selling off sharply over the last few trading days, UniPixel (UNXL +18.2%) is skyrocketing today. Yesterday evening, SA contributor Ivan Jimenez argued both UniPixel's UniBoss metal touch sensor tech and rival Atmel's (ATML -1.1%) XSense sensors have the potential to take share from traditional ITO sensors: UniBoss is seen having an edge in price, and XSense in transparency and thickness. 44% of UniPixel's float was shorted as of March 15. 10 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
