- Wednesday, January 16, 12:17 PM Game developers Activision (ATVI -1.3%) and Take-Two (TTWO -1.1%) slide a bit after Pres. Obama says violent video games will be studied as part of his administration's response to the Newtown, CT shooting. Developers had already sold off in December on concerns about new political scrutiny. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, January 11, 11:39 AM Activision (ATVI +2.6%) is rallying after a positive Cowen note manages to overshadow bleak industry data from NPD. The firm thinks the game developer's positioning remains strong in light of growing game subscriptions, and sees new titles acting as growth catalysts in the coming years. Also: Call of Duty: Black Ops II topped NPD's December bestseller list, and Skylanders Giants came in at #8. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 11, 9:54 AM Electronic Arts (EA -1.1%) and GameStop (GME -1.7%) open lower after NPD reports U.S. physical retail video game hardware and software sales for the pivotal month of December fell 27% and 23% Y/Y, respectively. Those numbers are much worse than the 13% and 11% drops reported for November, and are particularly discouraging in light of hopes new game launches would stabilize demand. The Xbox 360 was again the top-selling console with 1.4M sales, but that's still down 17.6% Y/Y. Piper has downgraded EA to Neutral. 2 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 8, 9:06 AM The bad news from GameStop on its holiday sales has game sellers on watch for volatility. Premarket: EA -1.0%, ATVI -0.6%, TTWO -0.5%. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, December 28, 2012, 2:18 PM 2012 was a big year for mobile game development and game studio layoffs, observes VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi in a year-end recap. 42% of gaming startups are now focused on mobile, as soaring user activity attracts developers in spite of the business model challenges. 2012 also saw social casino game use take off, something that could bode well for Zynga's (ZNGA) online gambling efforts, and witnessed multiplayer online games such as World of Warcraft and Star Wars: The Old Republic adopt free-to-play models. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 5:33 PM $5 is a small fraction of what popular console games sell for. But traditional developers such as EA, ATVI, and TTWO are finding it's more than what many mobile gamers are willing to pay (up-front, at least), as they increasingly opt for free titles monetized via in-app purchases. Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a $5 title, had fallen to #25 on the iPhone app chart, and #52 on the iPad app chart, as of Christmas. This has led the game to be out-grossed by low-budget titles such as Candy Crush Saga and My Little Pony. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 2:05 PM Though they're not having as bad of a day as THQ, major game developers have been selling off today - EA -2.4%, ATVI -2.3%, TTWO -4% - and so has GameStop (GME -1.2%). Growing political scrutiny of violent video games in the wake of the Connecticut shooting seems to be the culprit. Shooter Adam Lanza was apparently a fan of the Call of Duty series. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 2:31 PM U.S. retail sales of traditional video game hardware and software fell 13% and 11% Y/Y in November, claims NPD. Those might not be numbers to celebrate, but they're a nice improvement from October's 37% and 25% Y/Y drops. Healthy Xbox 360 sales, the Nintendo (NTDOY.PK) Wii U launch, and strong receptions for marquee gaming titles helped the struggling industry stabilize a bit. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, December 6, 2012, 3:46 AM Activision Blizzard (ATVI) fights back against the rise of casual gaming as retail sales of "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" top $1B within the first 15 days of release. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick points out that the "Call of Duty" franchise has now generated more revenues than cinema sales of the "Harry Potter" and "Star Wars" series. Kotick's clearly a man not afraid of the non sequitur. 8 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 10:43 AM Activision (ATVI -2.1%) is down on an up day after receiving a downgrade to Neutral from Sterne Agee, which is worried sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops II are slowing. Activision rallied two weeks ago after announcing sales of Black Ops II topped $500M in its first 24 hours of availability. GameStop (GME -1.5%) is also lower. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 4:02 PM Microsoft (MSFT) provides a bit of holiday cheer for the struggling console gaming industry, announcing over 750K Xbox 360 units were sold last week, and that Xbox Live Gold subscriptions rose 50% Y/Y. The sales figure for the aging 360 both exceeds Microsoft's internal forecasts, and the 400K Wii U units Nintendo (NTDOY.PK) has sold thus far in the U.S. Strong initial sales for marquee games have already given industry observers some optimism. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 12:12 PM Activision (ATVI +4.8%) registers a big gain after announcing it sold over $500M worth of copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops II in its first 24 hours of availability. GameStop (GME +2.9%), which reported strong initial sales for the game earlier this week, is also rallying. The solid early reception for Black Ops II and Microsoft's Halo 4 are fueling hopes the console game industry will cap what has been an ugly year with a decent holiday season. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Consumer]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 4:55 AM Retailer GameStop (GME) sells over 1M copies worldwide of Activision Blizzard's (ATVI) “Call of Duty: Black Ops II” on the video-game's first day of sales. "'Black Ops II' is shaping up to be our biggest game launch of all time," gushes GameStop President Tony Bartel. Piper Jaffray's Michael Olson reckons that, based on retailer checks, 'Black Ops II' will sell 6.5M-7.2M overall in the and U.S. and U.K. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 4:05 PM Video game stocks closed higher as Microsoft (MSFT) announces it sold $220M worth of copies of the favorably-reviewed Halo 4 in its first 24 hours of availability, and expects to sell over $300M in in the first week. Though industry data remains bleak, hopes have grown that the holiday season will be relatively strong thanks to a healthy lineup of new titles. EA +1% ATVI +1.1%. TTWO +3.8%. GME +4.4%. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, November 9, 2012, 2:12 PM For every $2 U.S. consumers spent on traditional video game products in October, they spent nearly $1 on "digital format sales" such as downloads, subscriptions, in-app purchases, and mobile apps, according to NPD. Sales figures for traditional products were predictably bleak - hardware -37% Y/Y, software -25%, accessories +5% - though analyst Liam Callahan thinks rising M/M console sales bode well for the holiday season. Take-Two's (TTWO) NBA 2K13 was the best-selling game. (September) (mobile gaming: I, II) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 5:30 PM More on Activision: Q4 guidance is for revenue of $2.41B and EPS of $0.70, above a consensus of $2.34B and $0.67. Online subscription revenue (World of Warcraft and Call of Duty Elite) +26% Y/Y, console games -16%, PC and Other (includes Skylanders merchandise) +273%. North America revenue +23% Y/Y, Europe +17%, Asia-Pac +20%. Over 10M World of Warcraft subs, up from Q2's 9.1M. ATVI +2% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
