- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 4:50 PM More on Activision's Q2: Revenue beat fueled by strong accessory and action figure sales for Skylanders. But World of Warcraft subs fell by 1.1M Q/Q to 9.1M. That contributed to online subscription revenue falling 32% Y/Y to $199M. Home console revenue fell 25% to $203M. Deferred revenue declined by $21M Q/Q. Asia-Pac revenue more than doubled Y/Y, now 17% of total. ATVI -3.5% AH. (PR) (CC webcast) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 4:14 PM Activision Blizzard (ATVI): Q2 EPS of $0.20 beats by $0.08. Revenue of $1.05B (+50% Y/Y) beats by $219M. Expects Q3 revenue of $690M and EPS of $0.07, below consensus of $728.1M and $0.12. Expects 2012 revenue of $4.63B and EPS of $0.99, slightly above consensus of $4.58B and $0.98. Shares -0.6% AH. - Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 5:23 PM As Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) continues to work with bankers to find a buyer to for its $8.2B, 61% stake in Activision (ATVI), each company has reportedly considered the possibility of the latter buying back the former's stake. But neither considers it likely, particularly given the premium Vivendi is looking for. Activision has $3B in cash, and would need to borrow the difference. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 5:39 PM NPD estimates total U.S. retail video game industry sales fell 29% Y/Y in June, slightly worse than May's 28% drop. Software sales fell 27%, as developers cope with aging consoles, a shortage of new titles, and mobile/social competition. The Xbox 360 was the best-selling console, but only 257K units were sold, down nearly 50% Y/Y. By contrast, one analyst thinks 20M iPads may have been sold globally in Q2. Those kinds of volumes are bound to impact the industry's balance of power. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 6:05 AM Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) Chairman Jean-Rene Fourtou confirms to Bloomberg reports that the conglomerate could sell its 61% stake in Activision (ATVI), although sources say potential suitors don't seem to be that interested. Those to demur include Microsoft (MSFT) and Disney (DIS), while China's Tencent and Japan's Nexon don't have the cash. 4 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 6:50 PM "The tablet will become the quasi-console, quasi-controller of this generation," declares Lazard's Atul Bagga. He notes current tablet games, many of which are blown-up versions of smartphone games, are merely scratching the surface of what the hardware can deliver. Today, Amazon (AMZN) introduced its GameCircle social gaming platform for the Kindle Fire. But for now, the iPad (AAPL), which offers the very similar Game Center, rules the roost in terms of developer support. (also) 6 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 1:55 PM Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) has reportedly hired an i-bank to gauge the market for 61%-owned Activision (ATVI -1.5%). It's added bankers are "sounding out" tech and media companies such as Tencent, Time Warner, and Microsoft, as well as P-E firms. Vivendi's efforts to sell Activision, first reported last week, are pivotal to its restructuring plans. But a buyer for the $13.3B company could be hard to come by, and many think a spin-off of Vivendi's stake is more likely. (earlier) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 11:44 AM Activision (ATVI -1.6%) co-chairman Brian Kelly has received a new contract that will pay a $15M bonus if the company is acquired. CEO Jason Kotick is already set to receive $30M in the event of an acquisition. It was only last week that reports emerged that 61% owner Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) is putting Activision on the block. Separately, Cowen says checks indicate the World of Warcraft and Call of Duty franchises are performing well enough to support the firm's above-consensus estimates. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 12:06 PM Confirming earlier speculation, Activision (ATVI +3.7%) announces it's partnering with Chinese Internet messaging and gaming giant Tencent (TCEHY.PK) to bring an online version of Call of Duty to Chinese gamers. The game will be free to play, and monetized via virtual goods purchases. Rival Electronic Arts (EA) is teaming up with Tencent to bring The Sims Social to China. (yesterday) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, July 2, 2012, 7:04 PM Though Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) wants to sell its entire 61% stake in Activision (ATVI), investors shouldn't bet on that outcome, thinks Wedbush's Michael Pachter. Activision's ~$10B enterprise value is too much for most rival game publishers, and U.S. media companies are nervous about large gaming acquisitions in light of past failures and fears of industry decline. Pachter believes a spin-off, preceded by a $5B debt offering and $8B dividend (the value of Vivendi's stake), is more likely. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, July 2, 2012, 2:22 PM U.S. consumers spent $3.4B on video games in Q1, per NPD, but $1.38B of that went to "digital games" - downloads, subscriptions, and mobile and social games - and another $525M was spent on used and rental games. Just $1.5B was spent on new retail physical game purchases, as demand continues to slump. Hence the efforts of Electronic Arts (EA) and Activision (ATVI) to diversify into mobile publishing, Facebook games, subscription services, and anything else that might stick. (also) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, June 29, 2012, 6:14 PM EA's just-announced $50/year premium service for Battlefield 3 may be a sign of things to come. Noting his company already offers a $25/year service for EA Sports games, exec Frank Gibeau claims EA is looking for ways to offer subscription services for other titles. With sales of console games themselves remaining in the doldrums, an aggressive subscription push has some logic to it. Activision (ATVI) boasts over 2M subs for the paid version of its Call of Duty Elite service. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, June 29, 2012, 4:03 PM Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) is seeking a buyer for its 61%, $8.1B stake in Activision (ATVI +4.4%), Bloomberg reports. It's added that if no buyer emerges, Vivendi will sell part of its stake on the open market. With Vivendi undergoing a CEO shake-up and chairman Jean-Rene Fourtou under pressure to restructure, other asset sales could also be on the way. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 7:01 PM Activision (ATVI) has been buying domain names that are related to both China and its Call of Duty franchise, leading to new speculation one or more online Call of Duty games will soon hit the Middle Kingdom. It has already been rumored Activision will partner with local gaming giant Tencent (TCEHY.PK) on a Chinese launch. In March, Activision renewed a deal with NetEase to offer World of Warcraft in China. Comment! [Tech]

TruffelPig: If you bought EA January 3 or so and they would be bought for $20 you would have lost money! That is NOT bullish really.
