- Thursday, May 2, 11:19 AM AU Optronics (AUO -8.8%) plunges to $4.46 after pricing a 74M-share stock offering at $4.40. The offering, which AU says will be used to fund raw material/component purchases, will yield the display panel maker net proceeds of $322.2M, and increase its share count by more than 8%. It arrives two days after shares rallied in response to a Q1 beat. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 30, 4:40 AM AU Optronics (AUO): Q1 EPS of -NT$0.36 beats by NT$0.25. Revenue of $3.16B beats by $0.01B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Friday, April 12, 12:54 PM Though Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is the world's biggest memory maker and a top LCD maker, the growing needs of its phone/tablet ops are forcing it to turn to 3rd-party suppliers. Digitimes reports Samsung has stepped up its purchases of mobile DRAM chips from Elpida and NAND flash products from Toshiba, and that the electronics giant is also buying 5.8" LCD panels from Taiwanese suppliers for its phablets. The implications for memory/LCD demand and pricing are a positive for rivals MU, SNDK, AUO, and LPL, and perhaps also glassmaker GLW and NAND controller supplier SIMO. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 28, 9:55 AM Apple (AAPL -0.4%) has cut its calendar Q2 iPad Mini orders to the 10M-12M range, sources tell Digitimes, which is generally better at reporting on supply chain activity than future product launches. The site claims the cut is due to "increased competition" from 7" Android tablets, but adds Apple is adjusting reserves ahead of a likely calendar Q3 refresh. AU Optronics (AUO -2.6%) and LG Display (LPL +0.2%) supply LCD panels for the Mini. 17 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 7, 7:48 AM Apple (AAPL) has adjusted expected iPad (down) and iPad Mini (up) shipments in 2013 to 33M and 55M respectively, reports Digitimes. Originally the company had predicted 60M for the iPad and 40M for the Mini. It may be bad news for panel suppliers to the iPad, but good news to those for the iPad Mini. 13 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, February 21, 12:47 PM Apple (AAPL -0.9%) roundup: 1) David Einhorn has scheduled a 2PM ET call to discuss his preferred stock proposal (webcast). Ahead of the call, he asserts the proposal is "a lot better" than a standard dividend or buyback hike. 2) As iWatch rumors grow, AppleInsider uncovers an Apple patent for a watch with a flexible touchscreen and a spring that allows it to conform to a user's wrist. 3) AU Optronics (AUO) has reportedly resolved its iPad Mini panel yield issues, and is working on the next-gen version. It might not be a coincidence the Mini is now listed as "in stock" on Apple's site. 19 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 19, 10:40 AM AU Optronics (AUO +9.9%) soars after: 1) Forecasting a 2013 turnaround, with panel shipments and utilization rates beginning to rebound in March. 2) Announcing plans to raise up to $350M in an ADR offering, something that could help shore up a balance sheet featuring $1.8B in short-term debt, and $7.4B in total debt. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, February 6, 5:03 AM AU Optronics (AUO): Q4 EPS of -NT$1.41 misses by NT$0.52. Revenue of NT$99.4B (+11.1% Y/Y) misses by NT$3.80B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Friday, January 18, 10:43 AM Sharp (SHCAY.PK) has "nearly halted production" of displays for the regular iPad as demand shifts towards the iPad Mini and Apple (AAPL -0.6%) attempts to manage inventory, Reuters reports. Many analysts have already forecast the Mini, which is thinner and much lighter than the 4th-gen regular iPad, will account for a majority of iPad sales in Q1. Higher Mini sales benefit display suppliers AUO and LPL. Due to lower price tags, Apple's average gross profit on Mini sales appears to be lower than its average gross profit on regular iPad sales. 50 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, January 4, 6:43 PM U.S. retail Windows notebook sales ended up falling 11% Y/Y during the holiday season (Nov. 18-Dec. 22), estimates NPD; that's just a little better than the 13% drop estimated for Windows PC sales from the time of the Win. 8 launch to the first week of December, and suggests the OS hasn't don't much yet to halt tablet cannibalization. Touchscreen notebooks accounted for just 4.5% of Win. 8 sales. MacBook sales fell 6%, but their ASP rose nearly $100 to $1,419. Flat-panel TV sales fell 1.5%, and their ASP more than 8% to $364. 18 Comments [Tech]

After-hours top losers: MLNX -16%. RMBS -12%. ESIO -8%. AUO -6%. OME -4%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Thursday, December 27, 2012, 10:14 AM Apple (AAPL -0.4%) roundup: 1) Having just moved some iMac production to the U.S., Apple is now reportedly considering moving Mac Mini production to the U.S. 2) Apple is also reportedly thinking of using Sharp's low-power IGZO LCDs in future iDevices, should supply be adequate - AUO could be used as a second supplier. Qualcomm just made an investment in Sharp to finance IGZO R&D. 3) Tim Cook has received a salary of $4.17M for 2012. Last year, he received 1M restricted shares that vest in 2016 and 2021. 15 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 11:55 AM Though its P/E is now well into the single digits after backing out cash, Apple (AAPL -1.3%) is having another tough day. Digitimes reported this morning Taiwanese supply chain sources expect Dec. quarter iPad Mini shipments to total just 8M due to continued touch panel shortages (previous); it sees shipments rising to 13M next quarter as panel yields improve. NPD recently reported Apple had raised its Mini display orders to 12M+. 22 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 5:35 PM While RBC and Wells Fargo talk up Apple's (AAPL +2.9%) Chinese sales, Wedge Partners and Merrill try to soothe concerns about iPhone order cuts (I, II). Wedge claims Apple has raised its FQ2 iPhone 5 production forecast by 10%-15% from conservative levels. Merrill suggests order cuts talk largely relates to displays, and that checks with other suppliers indicate only a seasonal drop. Still, the firm is lowering its FY13 iPhone forecast to 162M units from 170.5M, citing "a tepid US/Europe consumer and aggressive promotions [presumably for rival products] at US retailers." 12 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, December 14, 2012, 2:42 PM While other firms (I, II) are lowering their iPhone and regular iPad forecasts, NPD claims Apple (AAPL -3.7%) has more than doubled its iPad Mini display panel orders to 12M+ (presumably to AUO and LPL) to meet strong demand. Moreover, NPD thinks the Mini could account for half of 2013 iPad shipments, which it pegs at 100M+. The difference between the Mini's size (0.68 lbs. and 0.28" thick) and the 4th-gen iPad's (1.44 lbs. and 0.37") is hard to ignore here. Separately, Digitimes reports Apple is working on a second-gen Mini that's lighter still, and will sport a better display. 39 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 1:42 PM AU Optronics (AUO +7.9%) is posting huge gains, apparently thanks to favorable comments from rival LCD supplier Chimei Innolux. Chimei says it expects 2013 sales to rise 10%, welcome news for an industry hit hard in 2012 by slumping TV demand. AU's gains come in spite of a Digitimes report claiming the company's capacity will drop 7% this month due to a "high voltage circuit drop" at a Taiwanese facility. LCD glassmaker Corning (GLW +0.7%) is outperforming, but LG Display (LPL -1.6%) isn't. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
