Homebuilders: Lennar Tries Commissions, Smart Cars [Housing Tracker] [view article]
Why don't Lennar (and the rest of the homebuilders) try something that might work--- lowering prices? Reply

Can't Short XHB? Create Your Own Homebuilders ETF to Short [view article]
Congratulations to those who held on to your homebuilder shorts since the date of this article in February '08 and through the bounce in May. The FED, FRE, FNM, and others have attempted to float the market to buy time, but in the end, market will always return to fundamentals.

I too have been unable to borrow shares in ITB, haven't tried XHB though. Can anyone recommend an inverse ETF or bear market ETF for homebuilders? This is really what's desired here as it would do best to hedge against speculation and keep trading costs and expenses low. Reply

One of the most useful columns I've read on this website. The credit markets are pricing in much more pain for the homebuilders, and several of them will be bankrupt soon enough as their earnings disappear, their ability to refinance debt is severely reduced, and the cash they are hoarding now is eliminated as they are forced to finally pay down their debt. Finding ITB shares to borrow can be hit/miss, although it is a better index to short as it is homebuilders only, assuming that is what you are looking for. Reply

Although XHB wasn't available for shorting, you might try ITB (iShares DJ US Home Construction index), which I was able to short. Reply

A good buy is based on price and your investment horizon. Real assets such as land can get cheaper, however how many buyers of land have yet to hear that homebuilders and other large buyers of land have been hit hard. Isn't it possible the problems of homebuilders and thier land holdings is largerly reflected in the price of land stocks? I am long real estate inclusive of Joe and expect to be richly rewarded in 08. Reply

Hi - It looks like the author thinks that land is a good buy. The dead weight on all the homebuilders stocks is somehow a good deal if a non-homebuilder holds it. These should be sells. - Doug Reply
