- Wednesday, April 17, 4:09 PM American Express (AXP): Q1 EPS of $1.15 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $7.9B misses by $0.15B. Shares -1.1% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 14, 4:43 PM More on bank capital return plans: American Express (AXP) an increase in the quarterly dividend to $0.23 from $0.20 and $4.2B in share repurchases over the next year. BNY Mellon (BK) an increase in the quarterly dividend to $0.15 from $0.13 and $1.35B in share repurchases over the next year. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, October 8, 2012, 9:59 AM More on Wal-Mart/AMEX (previous): Against Bluebird's long list of $0 fees is Green Dot's (GDOT -20%) $5.95 monthly fee with 62% of its business coming from Wal-Mart - a "death blow," writes firstadopter. Also keep an eye on NetSpend Holdings (NTSP -5.2%), another provider of prepaid debit cards. Comment! [Consumer, Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, October 8, 2012, 9:53 AM More on Wal-Mart/AMEX's Bluebird (previous): By partnering with AXP, it appears WMT has made its move into banking (previously denied to it in the 90s by Greenspan, among others). On the conference call, it's indicated Bluebird will move into check-writing in 2013. Monthly fee $0, Set up fee $0, Direct Deposit fee $0. (PR) 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move, Financials]
- Monday, October 8, 2012, 8:14 AM American Express (AXP) and Wal-Mart (WMT) launch Bluebird - "an alternative to debit and checking accounts." The service appears designed to allow customers the sorts of things they're used to, but no longer getting for free from basic checking. The most immediate casualty is Green Dot, which now must face cheaper competition from its largest customer (Wal-Mart). GDOT -14% premarket. (PR) 3 Comments [Consumer, Financials, Breaking News, Top Stories, On the Move]
- Monday, July 16, 2012, 2:35 PM Shares of American Express (AXP +1.3%) also enjoy a boost following the settlement between rival card issuers and retailers. AXP benefits because MasterCard and Visa would lower their fees less than expected and thus "can continue to charge its current rates and won’t see meaningful pricing pressure," Susquehanna says. Capital One (COF +2.3%) also should benefit. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, July 16, 2012, 7:33 AM Consumers will see extra charges when they use plastic as a byproduct of the massive settlement between retailers and credit card companies. Merchants have wider authority to add a surcharge for credit card transactions as part of the historic deal. Premarket: V +3.2%, MA +4.1%, AXP +0.4%. 15 Comments [Financials, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 3:53 PM American Express (AXP -2.7%) after Vice Chair Gilligan - speaking at a conference - says billings growth through the quarter ending in May was 9-10%, slower than the year's first quarter, with the strong greenback among the reasons for the weakness. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Friday, April 13, 2012, 2:36 PM Better than expected earnings may not be helping JPMorgan (JPM) shares, but as one of the largest U.S. credit card issuers, Citi analysts think its positive trends bode well for issuers. JPM's Y/Y growth rate of card spending is moving up and Q2 charge-offs are expected to improve, apparently "a sold read through" for V +1.5%, MA +1.7% and AXP -0.9%. 1 Comment [Financials, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 29, 2012, 7:34 AM American Express (AXP) is downgraded to Market Perform at Wells Fargo, with the price target raised from $52-57 to $60-64. It's a strict valuation call, with Wells saying the current price of $59 and a price target of $60-64 doesn't warrant an Outperform. Shares -1% premarket. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Monday, March 26, 2012, 3:18 PM American Express (AXP +2.2%) confirms a new repurchase program of 150M shares worth of its common stock and says it will raise its dividend payout by 11% to $0.20 per share. AXP now trades with a 1.23% yield. Comment! [Financials, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 10:51 AM Groupon (GRPN -2.8%) is selling off, and the culprit might be a deal between American Express (AXP) and Twitter. The deal allows AmEx cardholders with Twitter accounts to have retail discounts automatically loaded onto their cards after making tweets with specific hashtags. Initial partners for the program include Best Buy, McDonald's, and Whole Foods. (yesterday) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 1:14 PM Green Dot (GDOT -6%) sells off after it's learned American Express (AXP) is trialing the sale of its Bluebird prepaid cards at Wal-Mart. AmEx's card could represent competition for Wal-Mart's MoneyCard, which is managed by Green Dot courtesy of a contract that runs through May 2015. Jefferies is defending Green Dot, stating it believes Bluebird features a variety of fees. Comment! [Financials, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, January 5, 2012, 5:14 PM Weight Watchers (WTW +8.4%) jumped after announcing deals with NYSE Euronext (NYX) and American Express (AXP) that will allow employees of those companies to sign up for the program and have all or part of it paid for by their employer. The news actually came out on Jan. 3, but traders didn't seem to notice until today. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 5, 2012, 10:07 AM Worries about Europe are overshadowing the strong U.S. jobs numbers (I, II) and sending markets lower, with the S&P -0.9%. Financials are hurting following a broad bank selloff in Europe due to UniCredit's discounted share issue, Spain's plan to make its banks set aside €50B, and Hungary's woes. HIG -1.6%, JPM -0.5%, C -1.2% and AXP -0.75%. 3 Comments [On the Move, Financials]
- Thursday, December 15, 2011, 3:43 PM Discover (DFS -3.2%) sells off despite beating earnings and a dividend boost. Spooking investors are worries the company has seen the best of credit improvements. Discover released just $68M in reserves into the profit column in FQ4 against $359M in FQ3. "It's going to be harder for card stocks to outperform over the next 6-12 months," says Donald Fandetti from Citigroup. DFS +24.5% YTD. Comment! [On the Move, Financials]

Vertical Spread: The upper strike price has more time premium included. Funny thing that, since you would hardly favor a less likely to be ITM contract.
