- Monday, April 23, 2012, 3:39 PM United Continental (UAL) says it's ended discussions with Airbus (EADSY.PK -5%) and is negotiating solely with Boeing (BA -1.3%) for a potential order of about 200 narrow-body jets. the airline had been in talks with both companies for over six months on the nearly $17B order. The move sounds logical from a maintenance standpoint, considering that 75% of UAL's fleet is already made up of BA aircraft. Comment! [On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 9:59 AM Boeing (BA +0.9%) announces that the first 787 to fly partially-powered by biofuels took off from Everett, Washington on its way to Tokyo. Japan's ANA was the carrier for the notable flight that will emit an estimated 30% less CO2 than a run from a comparable airplane. 3 Comments [Energy]
- Friday, April 13, 2012, 10:45 AM Boeing (BA -1.3%) plans to become a mobile phone seller of sorts with a highly secure device aimed to please the James Bonds of the world. For an estimated cost of $15K-$20K per phone, members of the defense and intelligence community can grab the Android-powered Boeing Phone. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 1:34 PM Boeing (BA +2.4%) updates its order and delivery totals for 2012 after adjusting for recent buys and cancellations. The manufacturer now shows 415 net orders for the year, led by a whopping order for 230 737s from Lion Air placed in February. 1 Comment [On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 2:04 PM Boeing (BA +0.5%) institutes a number of measures aimed at making its 737 jets more fuel efficient and attractive to buyers weighing the jet versus the Airbus A320neo. According to the company, 737 improvements include extending the tail cone, updating flight controls, and strengthening landing gear, wings and the fuselage. 2 Comments [Global & FX]
- Monday, April 9, 2012, 11:29 AM Now that it has overtaken Airbus as the no. 1 aircraft producer, Boeing (BA -1.8%) is now poised to profit from 787 Dreamliners and 737 planes that have caused difficulty in recent years, Maxim says in projecting a $90 price target: “After years of design and testing for these two aircraft, we believe it is now time for Boeing to ring the cash register." Comment! [On the Move]
- Monday, April 9, 2012, 6:37 AM Boeing (BA) finalizes an order with Transaero Airlines to sell the Russian carrier four 787s valued at $744M. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Friday, April 6, 2012, 10:45 AM Airbus (EADSY.PK) says its Q1 deliveries grew 10% Y/Y to 131 commercial airplanes; yesterday, Boeing (BA) announced Q1 deliveries of 137 aircraft, up 32% Y/Y. The results mean Boeing has overtaken Airbus at the top spot in annual aircraft production for the first time since 2002. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Thursday, April 5, 2012, 12:35 PM Boeing (BA -0.1%) announces Q1 deliveries climbed 32% Y/Y and 7.9% Q/Q to 137, including 99 for its next generation planes. The company is positioned in 2012 to end the 9-year streak of Airbus (EADSY.PK) outdelivering it. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 10:44 AM Boeing (BA -0.1%) plans to open an aerospace and research tech center in Brazil in a strategic move to strengthen ties with the R&D community in the nation. The company forecasts Brazil will have to buy more than $100B worth of airplanes over the next 20 years. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Sunday, April 1, 2012, 5:27 AM The EU has not stopped providing illegal subsidies to Airbus (EADSY.PK) , the U.S. said on Friday, so it will request the WTO to rule on the matter. The U.S. has said previously it would seek sanctions of $7B-$10B on EU goods; any WTO approval for such a move could take a year, and analysts expect the sides to reach a deal before then. Comment!
- Thursday, March 29, 2012, 3:32 PM Boeing (BA -0.7%) confirms that China Eastern Airlines (CEA +0.1%) has switched up an order, choosing to take delivery on 45 single-aisle 737 planes - instead of 24 787 Dreamliners - as the airliner refocuses on domestic routes. The company also announced that an order for two extra 787s from Air New Zealand was offset by a pair of cancellations from unidentified customers. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 1:17 PM Latin America will need 2,000 or 2,500 new commercial planes over the next 20 years, depending on whether you ask Airbus (EADSY.PK) or Boeing (BA) respectively (I,II). Either way, lots of money is involved - from $197B-$250B. 5 Comments
- Friday, March 23, 2012, 2:26 PM Esterline Technologies (ESL +8.8%) shares jump after the Daily Mail speculates the company may be a takeover target for BAE Systems (BAESY.PK), Boeing (BA) or Lockheed Martin (LMT), and that one of them is about to begin a bid of more than $95/share. ESL is a parts supplier for the aerospace and defense industry, and is considered among the most undervalued stocks in the sector. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 22, 2012, 3:42 PM Boeing (BA -1.5%) and Airbus (EADSY.PK) face a serious headwind with their plans to increase production due to the growing financial duress of cash-strapped contractors. Industry consultant PwC reports that 21% of aviation industry suppliers can't support the production pace that Boeing and Airbus aim to achieve. A potential solution to the problem is to have airliners shoulder some of the development costs, but can they afford it? 1 Comment
- Thursday, March 22, 2012, 2:27 PM Boeing (BA) joins archrival Airbus (EADSY.PK - previously) in opposing the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme, arguing instead for "international rules ... that everyone can sign up to." The Chinese government's opposition to the EU's efforts may be helping Boeing land aircraft deals. Separately, Boeing rules out negotiating with Airbus over a WTO dispute regarding aircraft subsidies. Comment! [Global & FX]
