- Monday, June 3, 3:22 AM A New York court is due to start a hearing today over whether it should approve Bank of America (BAC) $8.5B agreement to settle claims with investors over soured mortgage bonds. While heavyweights such as BlackRock (BLK) and Goldman Sachs (GS) support the deal, it faces opposition from AIG (AIG), which says it has $10.5B worth of claims against BofA. Approval of the agreement would enable the bank to take a major step in cleaning up the mess it inherited when it bought Countrywide. 4 Comments [Financials, Top Stories]
- Thursday, May 30, 10:30 PM Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan has vowed to finally make cross-selling work, but he faces resistance from the thundering herd at Merrill Lynch. One example is a new bonus formula which puts the bank's interests at odds with those of Merrill clients. Brokers are also wary of steering customers to the bank for a mortgage only to be hit by rejections or lousy customer service. "We're going to hand (the client) over to this mortgage process and then 3 months later they hate you," says a (former) wealth manager. By the way, BAC touched a 2+ year high today. 3 Comments [Financials]
- Thursday, May 30, 4:29 PM AIG drops its lawsuit against the FRBNY over who may sue over losses suffered by the company on MBS. The Fed's Maiden Lane II took over the securities as part of the bailout, and the issue was whether AIG gave up its right to sue when it unloaded the paper. The move comes even as a judge earlier this month said AIG did not relinquish its right to sue Bank of America (BAC) over mortgages issued by Countrywide. 3 Comments [Financials]
- Thursday, May 30, 3:06 AM Fiat (FIATY.PK) is reportedly in negotiations with major banks to borrow up to $10B that the Italian carmaker would use to acquire the 41.5% of Chrysler it doesn't own and refinance the two companies' debt at lower interest rates. The banks include Bank of America (BAC), Deutsche Bank (DB), Goldman Sachs (GS) (GS) and BNP Paribas (BNOBF.PK). Fiat's purchase of the holding is being held up by a legal dispute over the value of the stake. 3 Comments [M&A, Top Stories, Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 29, 10:40 AM There will be no negative equity in the U.S. housing market within 18-24 months, predicts Ed Yardeni, extrapolating today's news - Case-Shiller up 10.9%, Bill Ackman and Ken Griffin buying up fancy properties, the return of CA's flippers, bidding wars in NYC - into the future. If he's right, it could explain the resilience of Citigroup (C +1.1%) (still with heavy exposure to maybe not-so-toxic assets through Citi Holdings), and Bank of America (BAC +1%) amid today's big decline. 5 Comments [Financials, U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, May 28, 2:59 PM "The tank doesn't look empty yet," says Bernstein's John McDonald, speaking about the trend of bank profits benefitting from releases of loss reserves. It is fading though, he allows, and likely to account for about 10% of profit at large and mid-cap banks this year and 1% next year vs. 22% in 2012. At the top of the list of those benefitting sits Bank of America (BAC). Also: Synovus Financial (SNV), Citigroup (C), and PNC. Comment! [Financials]
- Friday, May 24, 2:11 PM There is growing evidence Bank of America (BAC), JPMorgan (JPM), Citigroup (C), and Ally Financial violated the terms of the mortgage servicing abuse settlement, according to NY AG Schneiderman. In a letter to the settlement monitor (obtained by Reuters), Schneirderman says other states "have identified similar recurring deficiencies." The AG considers the letter to have started the clock on a "waiting period" necessary before a lawsuit may be filed. 17 Comments [Financials]
- Friday, May 24, 7:40 AM Bank of America (BAC) is seeking bids for about 40 branches in rural NY and PA, reports Bloomberg. The branches hold about $1B in deposits and could go for $20M-$30M, according to a source. On a cost-cutting drive, BofA has been closing or selling outlets for a couple of years, its branch count now at 5,389 vs. about 6K when Brian Moynihan took over in 2010. Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, May 21, 9:11 AM Bank of America (BAC) looks to save some money, launching a preferred stock offering with proceeds set to redeem outstanding Series J (7.25%), Series 6 (6.7%), and Series 7 (6.25%) preferreds. Shares +0.3% premarket. (PR) 2 Comments [Financials]
- Friday, May 17, 2:59 PM Wells Fargo (WFC) and Citigroup (C) have halted the vast majority of foreclosure sales in numerous states following the release of new standards from the OCC, reports the American Banker. Harkening back to the days of the robo-signing scandal, Wells' foreclosure sales across 5 westerns states dropped to fewer than 10 per day in April from more than 300 previously. JPMorgan (JPM) also slowed sales, but has returned to normal activity. BofA (BAC) is proceeding as usual. 1 Comment [Financials, U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, May 16, 3:55 PM Described as a win for Wall Street's biggest swaps dealers - JPM, BAC, C, MS, and GS - the CFTC approves new swap trading rules 3 years after the passage of Dodd-Frank. The rules mandate new trading platforms making bids and offers public, but require traders send request for bids to just two firms before execution rather than the five some had called for. Smaller exchanges aren't sweating it, instead happy they now have a defined system to operate under. 1 Comment [Financials]
- Friday, May 10, 1:00 PM Bank of America (BAC) fights back against NY's crusading AG, telling Eric Schneiderman he has no right to sue over violations to the $25B mortgage settlement without giving the bank time to cure said violations (which the bank denies making). The settlement, say BofA lawyers, gives the bank 42 days to act after being notified of any issues. 4 Comments [Financials]
- Friday, May 10, 8:39 AM NY AG Schneiderman may have to drop the state's case against Bank of America (BAC) over misleading investors during the Merrill Lynch acquisition after a judge last month approved a $2.43B class-action settlement for shareholders. "Once shareholders have made their peace, they can't take a 2nd bite of the apple through the AG," says a securities lawyer. 4 Comments [Financials]
- Friday, May 10, 7:21 AM Looking for growth, KeyBank (KEY) finds it, purchasing a Bank of America (BAC) CMBS portfolio and acquiring Berkadia Commercial Mortgage's special servicing business. Berkadia will act as sub-servicer on all CMBS primary servicing just acquired from BofA. Upon closing Key's commercial servicing portfolio will be about $205B - top 3 in the country. (PR) Comment! [Financials]
- Tuesday, May 7, 1:02 PM A new twist in the legal battle between AIG and BAC as a judge rules the insurer did not give up its right to sue BofA over $7B in MBS-related losses even though it unloaded the paper as part of its bailout. The FRBNY has already settled with BofA over MBS its Maiden Lane II took in from AIG as part of the rescue. 14 Comments [Financials]
- Monday, May 6, 4:57 PM More on the BofA/MBIA settlement: As the settlement occurred prior to the filing of BofA's (BAC) 10-Q, the bank will take a Q1 charge of $1.5B, or $0.10/share, bringing net income down from $0.20/share to $0.10. The Tier 1 Capital Ratio will increase 10 bps to 9.52%, reflecting the reduction in risk-weighted assets associated with terminated CDS contracts. Tangible book value drops $0.10/share to $13.36. In addition to cash of about $1.7B, BofA will provide a $500M credit line to MBIA Insurance. It will also receive warrants to purchase 9.94M shares of MBIA (MBI) stock - roughly a 4.9% stake - at an exercise price of $9.59/share anytime prior to May 2018. (PR) Comment! [Financials]

Added to $BAC position today. #BAC will be $30 stock in 3-4 years, will pay respectable dividends as well. Nows the time to go long $BAC. - View all 3 replies
-
John McCoy: I know, but my cost basis was low enough that adding a few more $BAC shares at this level did not increase my average cost signficantly. -
John McCoy: I don't mind averaging up a bit if I think the potential is there, and it's there with $BAC.
