New blood-thinning medicines could reap billions of dollars for Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Bayer (BAYRY.PK) and Boehringer Ingelheim. Until now, docs have used a 60-year old pill sold by Bristol-Myers (BMY).

The FDA warns Bayer (BAYRY.PK) for illegally marketing two unapproved over-the-counter medicines combining aspirin with dietary supplements. Bayer says it stands behind 'both products and all the marketing claims that we make in their support.'

Bayer's (BAYRY.PK) Q3 profit fell after a one-time tax benefit in the previous year. Net income -76% to €277M ($353M) vs. €1.18B the previous year, and short of the €302M consensus. Sales +2% to €7.95B. Bayer still expects 2008 sales of around €33B.

Bayer (BAYRY.PK) shares rise on rumors that Pfizer (PFE) may make a bid for the company. Pfizer has a history of doing mega-deals but past acquisitions have disappointed investors who want to see Pfizer rely less on aging blockbusters.
