Nice article. We sell schools, libraries, parents and even students audiobooks and software such as Musical Instruments. High prices are really annoying these buyers so many are looking for lower prices such as ours. Dollar Tree, for example, has a whole "Teachers" area--that parents, students, and libraries shop, in addition to teachers. The textbook people need a new paradigm or will wither away. Certainly poor investments--trying to catch a falling knife. Reply

OMG, they've reinvented timesharing! SaaS -- ooo-ooo so new! Oooo so cool! lol, there was this thing called a "service bureau" back in the 60's and 70's. Yeah, the vendor had the software and you just sent 'em your data. Later there were these things called "terminals" where you could log in and enter your data to the vendor's system and get back reports online. Hmmm, them terminals were kinda like "thin clients", not much brains cause the processing was on the vendor system. Lol... the more things change the more they stay the same. Reply

    Definitely not SuccessFactors:

"SuccessFactors is perhaps somewhat early in going public, and thus, this period prior to profitability will be harder to withstand under public market scrutiny."

"the companies that offer applications that provide business value and have a sustainable business model (can make a profit) will rise to the top."

Which, in your view, are they (from the ones in the list)?

What Will Oracle Buy Next? [view article]
I doubt that Oracle would purchase Manhattan Associates as they have already added the warehouse and transportation modules to their Oracle Application software offering. Your thoughts? Reply

Blackboard Acts on Patent Award, Angers Customers [view article]
Thanks for the comment, though I wouldn't characterize the patent opponents as larcenous. I think at its heart this is a dispute with good arguments on both sides, and my reading of the patent doesn't give me much confidence that Blackboard will enjoy a nice revenue stream from royalties in the years ahead. I expect the prior art put forth by opponents will be very compelling when this is litigated or disputed, though I could easily be wrong.

But I also think this will help shake out smaller operators, which is good for Blackboard, and I think BBBB should remain dominant in their niche whether or not they have patent protection for their entire product portfolio. The important thing for the success of Blackboard's business is the strength of their customer relationships and the impact of their sales force -- not their patent.
