Wednesday, May 15, 8:05 AM Blackberry (BBRY) is downgraded to Hold by Bernstein's Pierre Ferragu, who lowers his price target to $15 from $22. "We dislike the risk/reward of our BB10 trade," he writes. "With Blackberry Live behind us, we see few additional positive catalysts coming through in the next 6 months." Tuesday, May 14, 4:00 PM The BlackBerry Q10 (BBRY -4%) will launch on Verizon and T-Mobile USA this June, and Sprint in "late summer." The Verizon/T-Mobile launches will come 2 months after the Q10 went on sale in the U.K. Meanwhile, Jefferies' Peter Misek continues singing BlackBerry's praises, stating checks leave him "very confident" about his 4M-unit BB10 shipment estimates for the May/August quarters, and that BES 10 will likely be "the main device management system" used by the DoD. Tuesday, May 14, 11:31 AM BlackBerry Messenger is coming to iOS and Android this summer, BlackBerry (BBRY -4.5%) announces at Live (webcast). Had this move been made 2-3 years ago, BlackBerry would've had a shot at dominating a giant mobile IM market. But now, it faces intense competition from the likes of WhatsApp, Kik, Viber, and Facebook Messenger, many of whom have 100M+ users. Nonetheless, an installed base of 60M users gives BBM a chance to make some headway. Tuesday, May 14, 9:57 AM BlackBerry (BBRY -1.2%) launches the mid-range Q5 QWERTY BB10 phone as Thorsten Heins delivers his keynote at the BlackBerry Live conference (webcast). Sporting a 3.1" touchscreen (like the Q10), the Q5 resembles the rumored R10, and will launch in various emerging markets starting in July. Monday, May 13, 9:22 AM BlackBerry (BBRY) +1.2% after Barron's provides a semi-favorable writeup about the potential of its BES 10 mobile device management (MDM) platform and network operations centers. The fact BlackBerry can pair its MDM software with a secure network could give it an edge, Barron's notes. Thursday, May 9, 11:44 AM BlackBerry (BBRY +2%) spikes higher on rumors Carl Icahn has bought a stake in the company. H-P was the beneficiary of such rumors a couple weeks ago. Tuesday, May 7, 10:58 AM Early feedback on U.K./Canadian BlackBerry Q10 (BBRY -4%) sales indicate volumes below expectations, says Cleveland Research. The firm also thinks Z10 sell-thru is likely half of what it was around launch time, and believes BB10 build targets for the next few quarters could fall to 6M-8M from 10M-12M. Likewise, Pac Crest remains bearish, and calls the U.K./Canadian Q10 launches a "mess." Monday, May 6, 1:54 PM Apple (AAPL +2.6%) commanded 57% of smartphone profits in Q1, and Samsung (SSNLF.PK) 43%, estimates Canaccord's Mike Walkley. All other OEMs collectively broke even, after having lost money last year. Apple's profit share is down from 2012's 69%, and Samsung's up from 2012's 34% - chalk those changes up to Samsung's share gains and Apple's gross margin decline. Walkley also writes Samsung's Galaxy S4 is off to a strong start (in spite of some reports of overheating), that checks indicate U.S. BlackBerry Z10 (BBRY +0.7%) sales are soft, and that U.K. Q10 supplies have been limited. 35 Comments [Tech]
Monday, May 6, 12:16 PM Fresh info about the rumored "R-series" mid-range QWERTY BlackBerry (BBRY +1.2%) phone is provided by Chinese site DGtle (translation). The phone will reportedly be called the R10, and sport a 3.1" display, 5MP camera, 1800mAh battery, and 8GB of internal storage. The display size is on par with the high-end Q10's, but the other specs are inferior. Friday, May 3, 9:21 AM The DOD has approved the use of BB10 phones and tablets on its networks, BlackBerry (BBRY) announces. The statement comes a couple days after the WSJ reported the DOD will sign off on the use of iPhones and iPads, as well as Samsung Galaxy phones. In March, Electronista reported an order is on tap for 650K iOS devices that will replace 470K BlackBerrys; the DOD denied the part about dumping BlackBerry, but didn't confirm or deny the part about the iOS orders. Tuesday, April 30, 4:23 PM "In five years I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore." Those comments from Thorsten Heins have set the tech press abuzz. Many note Heins' remarks, which follow past comments about BlackBerry (BBRY +4.3%) taking a cautious approach to tablets, seem strange given the market's staggering growth. But an explanation appears to lie in March remarks from Heins about BlackBerry pursuing "a mobile-computing experience" that allows users "to carry one computing device." Instead of competing in a hotly contested tablet market, BlackBerry seems to be pushing a vision of (BB10) smartphones paired with PC/tablet docking peripherals. Monday, April 29, 2:16 PM Early signs from the U.K. Q10 launch are "very very good" and BlackBerry (BBRY +3.1%) foresees "several tens of millions" in Q10 sales altogether, says Thorsten Heins in a Bloomberg TV appearance (video). Given BlackBerry's own sales figures as well as 3rd-party forecasts, he might be getting ahead of himself. Friday, April 26, 4:42 PM BlackBerry (BBRY +1.4%) spiked in afternoon trading after U.K.-based SA contributor Michael Collins reported of strong Q10 demand at a Carphone Warehouse store on launch day. According to Collins, the store sold out of its stock of 2K units within 90 minutes, with demand apparently well above that seen for the Z10. Friday, April 26, 5:46 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) strengthened its lead as the world's top vendor of mobile phones and of smartphones in Q1, IDC estimates. The South Korean giant increased its market share in the latter category to 32.7% from 28.8 a year earlier and shipped more smartphones than the next four providers combined. Apple's (AAPL) share slipped to 17.3% from 23%.
