- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 7:08 AM While Richard Schulze bickers with Best Buy (BBY) over the terms of due diligence talks, another option he has on the table is to appeal to shareholders directly with a special meeting of shareholders. Schulze only need the support of 25% of shareholders to call the meeting, only 5% more than what he carries around in his back pocket. (Previous: negotiations restart) Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 4:35 AM Best Buy (BBY) reportedly restarts negotiations with founder Richard Schulze about letting him carry out due diligence with a view to acquiring the retailer. Schulze has already rejected one offer. Meanwhile, the pay package of new Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly is worth up to $32M over three years, and he's guaranteed over $6.25M if he can't obtain a work visa by the end of September and the deal collapses. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 6:52 AM Best Buy (BBY) founder Richard Schulze hires proxy advisory firm D.F. King, in a move that edges him closer to hostile maneuvers without buying the company outright. Schulze, who holds close to 20% of outstanding BBY shares, could try to oust a few of the firm's directors, according to sources. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 1:40 PM Best Buy (BBY) stat of the day (h/t Michael Comeau of Minyanville): The company has spent $7.6B on buybacks and dividends since 2008, a mark greater than its current market cap of $6.05B. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 10:17 AM With all the cutting at Best Buy (BBY -6.2%), a decent amount of free cash flow looks to have helped the company's dividend survive the chopping block for the time being. But even with an offer on the table at $24-$26 and a nice little 4% yield as a kicker, investors are shying away and betting against a turnaround. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter cuts to the chase: "This is a herculean task even for an accomplished retail executive...Mr. Joly's complete lack of retail experience will be an impediment to his success." 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 9:27 AM Quick hits from Best Buy's (BBY) CC: Backs new CEO Hubert Joly as the turnaround specialist the company needs. Remains optimistic on margins as a greater mix of smartphones is introduced. Execs paint an ugly picture for international sales growth, particularly China. Sees different strategic plan and new products helping to boost earnings in H2. Shares -9.7% premarket. (webcast) (earnings) 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]

Premarket gainers: DEXO +35%. URBN +16%. NDSN +10%. PRAN +7%. PSTI +6%.
Losers: IMUC -15%. BBY -10%. VHC -8%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 8:26 AM Despite all the sound and fury with Best Buy's (BBY) Q2 results and pulled guidance, analyst Rahul Sharma says there's no real news on a retailer everybody already knew was struggling. BBY -8.6% premarket to $16.56, perhaps making Richard Schulze's buyout offer of $24-$26 a bit more tempting to the company's board if it still stands. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 8:14 AM More on Best Buy (BBY): Comparable-store sales down 1.6% Y/Y, with international falling off 8.2%. Domestic market share maintained. Suspends it share buyback. Pulls specific earnings guidance for FY13, saying only that it has reduced its expectations. Conference call ongoing (webcast). Shares -8.1% premarket. - Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 8:04 AM Best Buy (BBY): Q2 EPS of $0.20 misses by $0.11. Revenue of $10.5B (-3% Y/Y) misses by $150M. Shares -8.5% premarket. (PR) 2 Comments [Earnings, On the Move]

- Monday, August 20, 2012, 11:43 AM Richard Schulze takes a shot at Best Buy's (BBY) decision to hire turnaround specialist Hubert Joly as its CEO, saying the company needs a proven leadership team with deep retail experience and knowledge of Best Buy. Though it sounds a bit like sour grapes after the company for the most part spurred its ex-founder, Schulze was correct with the part of his statement where he added value is eroding. Best Buy 6.8% lower on the day. 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]

Premarket gainers: CVH +19%.
Losers: ZAGG -13%. PSTI -6%. BBY -6%. LOW -5%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Monday, August 20, 2012, 2:47 AM Best Buy (BBY) says founder Richard Schulze turns down an offer to carry out due diligence and that gives him 60 days to formulate a deal to take the company private. Schulze could then take his offer directly to shareholders in January if the board rejects his bid. Schulze and his team are "shocked" the Best Buy statement, Reuters reports, as they thought they were in talks about due diligence. (PR) (New CEO) Comment! [Top Stories, Consumer]
- Monday, August 20, 2012, 12:44 AM Best Buy's (BBY) new CEO is Hubert Joly, who stepped down from that job at Carlson (parent of T.G.I. Friday's and Radisson) today to assume the new post. With a turnaround reputation, Joly will need to manage the ongoing dealings with BBY founder Richard Schulze, who's trying to take the company private. 3 Comments [Consumer, Breaking News]
