- | On the move
- Friday, January 11, 7:23 AM Shares of Best Buy (BBY) reverse direction to move up 2.1% in premarket trading after the retailer shows slipping sales at comparable stores but beats the most dire of projections from analysts. Much of the focus on the company with the sales report in the rear-view mirror will now turn back to on if a Richard Schulze-led deal to buy the company will take off or not. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, January 11, 7:14 AM More on Best Buy's (BBY) holiday sales: The company notes sales were positive for mobile phones, tablets, and e-readers but that sales in entertainment, TVs, and computing declined. Comparable store sales globally fell 6.4% Y/Y with results in Canada and China both trailing off. For FY13, the company lowers its 2013 free cash flow estimate to $500M due to new factors and says accounts payable as a percentage of inventories will be lower. BBY -2.6% premarket. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, January 11, 7:08 AM Best Buy (BBY) says its sales slipped 0.4% Y/Y to $12.8B for the holiday period with a 2.2% rise in its international segment not enough to offset a 1.2% decline in Domestic segment sales. Domestic comparable store growth was flat during the period, while the company's beleaguered online channel delivered a 10% gain in revenue to $1.1B. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, January 10, 12:59 PM Electrics retailers move higher with shares of hhgregg (HGG +10.6%) reaching their highest level in close than a month while Conn's (CONN +1.1%) and Best Buy (BBY +4.5%) post more moderate gains. Indications Richard Schulze is still pushing due diligence forward for a Best Buy takeover and the ability of Supervalu to finalize its own sale of assets helped raised the profile of the group, according to traders. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 9, 11:26 AM Shares of Best Buy (BBY -2.5%) slip lower with concerns over Richard Schulze's ability to finalize a bid cropping up. It should be an eventful work for Best Buy with holiday sales due to be reported on Thursday. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 8, 8:41 AM No comment. That's the initial response from an executive at Best Buy (BBY) to Target's year-round online price match program. Eventually push will come to shove for the company with its own matching price program on 20 online retailers set to expire on Jan. 31. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 8, 8:20 AM Target (TGT) announces a new year-round price match designed to keep its prices level with major online retailers. The new policy takes effect immediately, which means the challenges for execs at Best Buy (BBY) just got a little more complicated. TGT +0.2% premarket. (Earlier: Amazon forsakes margins for free cash flow) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, January 7, 3:24 PM Conversion, conversion, conversion: A quick scan of the performance of some major retail websites shows the biting criticism of Best Buy's (BBY +0.5%) online business may be well-deserved. The company only converts 31% of its visitors into a sale compared to the 81% of visitors at Amazon.com and 76% checking in at Apple's site that actually buy something. Comparing the retailer's sales per physical space to brick-and-mortar peers yield similar disappointing results: Best Buy $865 per square foot vs. Costco at $1,031 and GameStop at $1,015. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, January 4, 9:14 AM Best Buy (BBY) joins other retailers in accusing Wal-Mart (WMT) of misleading consumers over prices in recent advertisements. A formal complaint has been sent to attorneys general in a number of different states over the price comparison ads. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, January 2, 11:20 AM Shares of Best Buy (BBY) shrug off the resignation of two board directors to hold on to the mild gains from earlier this week. Retail analysts note Richard Schulze will have an easier time acquiring the company without the pair of execs reported to have had contentious relationships with the Best Buy founder. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 1, 6:37 AM Two Best Buy (BBY) directors resigned yesterday, bringing to four the number of vacancies on the 11-member board. One director, Mike Mikan, was interim CEO from April-September and was a contender for the top job on a permanent basis; he is going to work for the hedge fund of Edward Lampert, who controls Sears. The second departure is that of lead independent director Matthew Paull, who will retire in April. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, December 27, 2012, 11:07 AM Best Buy (BBY -1.7%), RadioShack (RSH -4.4%), and J.C. Penney (JCP -3.8%) slump after being named by the WSJ, along with Sears (SHLD -0.1%), as retailers facing a "do or die" 2013. The paper notes a recent Harris poll indicated 1 in 4 shoppers who had "showroomed" had done so at Best Buy, and that RadioShack's decision to focus on phone/tablet sales has crushed its margins. Many retailers sold off yesterday on negative sales data, though J.C. Penney didn't. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 4:27 PM Symantec (SYMC) has appointed Stephen Gillett, formerly the head of Best Buy's (BBY) digital ops and a current board member, to the new position of COO. His initial responsibilities include marketing, communications, and IT. Symantec CEO Steve Bennett has been busy overhauling management since taking over in July. Gillett was hired by Best Buy only in March after a stint at Starbucks, where he handled its Wi-Fi and mobile payments efforts. His responsibilities have been re-assigned to other execs. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 12:27 PM ShopperTrak cuts its forecast for holiday sales in the U.S. to 2.5%, down from an earlier projection of 3.3% for the period. The data tracking group suggests the wind is out of the sail of retail since Black Friday. Retailers still hold out some hope that online shopping for December will beat estimates to narrow the gap, although that trend will favor mainly larger companies such as Amazon (AMZN -0.8%), Wal-Mart (WMT -0.4%), and Target (TGT -0.4%) - while leaving dollar stores (DG, DLTR, FDO) and electronics sellers (BBY, RSH, CONN) pinched. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 8:52 AM Best Buy's (BBY) innovation team pushed management to explore opportunities with Amazon only to be issued an "edict" of no partnering with the company, according to a new report. Beyond the usual dose of Monday morning quarterbacking, the note could have some read-through to ongoing dissension amongst the ranks at Best Buy with turnaround specialist Hubert Joly calling the shots. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, December 17, 2012, 2:18 PM P-E firms remain unconvinced after hearing the pitch from Richard Schulze on his plan to turn around Best Buy (BBY +0.7%), according to Bloomberg News. For a deal to happen, an offer in the mid-teens with little leveraging needs to materialize. (video) Comment! [Consumer]

Big news coming up for $GME Holiday sales and $BBY December revenues. Bullish on both stocks overall, but $BBY has surprise potential. - View all 1 replies

DAG1996: Just curious if anyone besides me thinks that's an absolutely stupid name for a computer. -
FortSumter: Stupid but appropriate for the bend over backwards screen I guess. Notice BBY not carrying on website either. Local reps "know nothing".

Roller coaster in $BBY continues. Down 11% today as Schulze gets extension on time for bid. Still think it goes private eventually. - View all 1 replies

Also seeing Best Buy $BBY back in MFI. Very cheap stock, nobody seems to believe in store CE retail going forward, though. - View all 1 replies
