- Tuesday, May 21, 9:15 AM Heard during Best Buy's (BBY) earnings call: 1) CEO Hubert Joly indicates the company might do more store-within-a-store deals with vendors. Talks are ongoing. 2) No specific details are given, but the company says it's already seeing a positive impact on sales in states where online sales taxes are collected. 3) Joly seems to be doing what he does best, negotiating cost reductions at Best Buy and squeezing out more savings. 4) A nice improvement in online sales is a highlight for the company as execs pitch the case the brand is being resurrected. BBY -2.7% premarket. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, April 30, 9:19 AM Shares of Best Buy (BBY) move up 6% in premarket trading after a plan by the company to sell its stake in Carphone Warehouse looks to be a smart move to investors. CEO Hubert Joly's intensified focus on strengthening Best Buy's balance sheet and improving returns on investment is the elixir du jour, but skeptics still point to the retailer's square footage costs in the U.S. as a hurdle to clear. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]

Premarket gainers: HPY +10%. HTWR +9%. ANAD +9%. AVP +8%. UBS +7%. BBY +6%.
Losers: DCTH -20%. AVEO -16%. NUAN -15%. PBI -10%. MTG -8%. CNH -6%. RVBD -6%. QGEN -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, April 10, 9:48 AM Shares of Best Buy (BBY -2.8%) slip lower in early trading. There isn't any alarming news out on the company, but in a week of sluggish indicators on retail sales traders appear to be trimming their holdings a bit with BBY on a +112% YTD tear. 3 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 4, 12:15 PM Shares of Best Buy (BBY +12.4%) have put together a double-digit rally after its plan to set up Samsung mini stores in outlets is well-received. Analysts think it might be just be the tip of the iceberg with the company aiming to let other retailers set up boutiques inside of its stores as well. 3 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 27, 12:46 PM Best Buy (BBY -3.8%) slips lower after S&P Capital IQ cuts its rating on the retailer to Sell from Hold on a valuation call. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 25, 9:18 AM Back to the future: The return of Richard Schulze to Best Buy (BBY) as Chairman Emeritus along with two of his nominees to the board is a good indication the founder will hold on to the large stake in the company he owns and will back a turnaround plan. If CEO Joly and Schulze are on the same page, analysts think the chances for a Best Buy revival look more promising. Shares of BBY +0.7% premarket to $22.92, marking their highest trading level in ten months. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 25, 8:17 AM The parade of analyst adoration for Best Buy (BBY) continues with Barclays raising its price target on shares to $28 from $20. Many of the investment firm upgrades have been tied to confidence in CEO Hubert Joly's ability to streamline the big box retailer. BBY +1.1% premarket to $23.00. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 20, 9:50 AM Why all the analyst love for Best Buy (BBY +2.5%)? Shares of the retailer have almost doubled since the start of the year as one investment after another turns bullish (Credit Suisse, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs). The common theme is that a strong management team can lead another round of cost cutting and squeeze more profits out of online and mobile channels. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 11, 8:45 AM What to like about Best Buy (BBY): A bullish take on the embattled retailer from Piper Jaffray focuses on the "substantial" free cash flow and attractive valuation in play. The firm sees more than just a slice-and-dice story at Best Buy, with the potential for sales and margin improvement also in the mix. BBY +1.2% premarket. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 11, 7:06 AM Piper Jaffay upgrades Best Buy (BBY) to Overweight from Neutral. A new price target of $26 reps 28% upside for shares. BBY +1% premarket to $20.37. (Last week: Jefferies ups its rating on BBY Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]

Friday, March 1, 9:10 AM
Premarket gainers: ISRG +9%. SHS +8%. CERS +8%. DECK +8%. SQNM +7%. BBY +6%. PGH +5%.
Losers: AT -34%. FWLT -17%. OVTI -15%. RNIN -14%. IEP -12%. ENMD -12%. YOKU -11%. SD -8%. LYG -8%. CWH -6%. RBS -6%. DB -5%. Comment! [On the Move] - Friday, March 1, 8:23 AM Best Buy (BBY) seems to be treading water (at the very least) with its price-matching program helping to boost sales without destroying gross margins (22.6% vs. 23.1% LY) to the extent some analysts predicted. The retailer's free cash flow also beat most estimates with accounts payable not getting stretched out to accomplish the trick a la J.C. Penney. BBY +6.5% to $17.46 premarket. (Earnings: I, II) 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, March 1, 8:11 AM More on Best Buy's (BBY) Q4: Comparable-store sales grew 0.9% during the period and online sales saw a healthy double-digit kick as the retailer regained some of its footing. Though the results showed improvement, the calendar also worked in the retailer's favor during the quarter with a shift for pre-Super Bowl sales into Q4. Adjusted free cash flow came in at $965M vs. recent guidance of $500M. The company says it won't issue any guidance for FY14, but notes it expects $700M-$800M in capital spending. BBY +5.6% premarket. (PR) 2 Comments [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 26, 4:48 PM Best Buy (BBY -3.2%) -1.3% AH, adding to the day's losses, after 5 sources tell Reuters Richard Schulze's buyout attempt is in jeopardy thanks to financing issues. Schulze is now said to be focused on a minority investment, one that could a PIPE transaction, but investors are said to remain hesitant. Talks with P-E firms Leonard Green, Cerberus, and TPG have reportedly made little progress. Schulze is facing a Thursday deadline to deliver a buyout proposal. (Feb. 13 WSJ report) Update: Best Buy has pushed back its FQ4 report by a day to March 1 to if Schulze makes a bid. 8 Comments [Consumer, On the Move, M&A]
- Thursday, February 21, 9:15 AM Best Buy (BBY) suddenly looks just a little bit more favorable to analysts as it benefits from mobile phone/tablet competition and gets subtle backing from consumer electronics firms anxious to limit Amazon's pricing power. Also to its credit, a new management team lead by CEO Hubert Joly has its hands firmly on the rudder. BBY -0.6% premarket, +46% YTD to complicate Richard Schulze's buyout bid. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
