There was a perverse reaction to the dismal employment news from the US last Friday with indices rising throughout the session. Looks like no one wanted to be caught short with THAT bank bailout master plan coming tomorrow (16.00GMT) and today’s fiscal stimulus. Note that the NASDAQ is now back positive for the year to date with Google (GOOG) (+54%) and Apple (AAPL) (+26%) showing strong leadership. The stimulus seems light on shovel ready projects. The banking ‘final solution’ looks anything but that; the markets hate delays and wait for no one. The euphoria may be very short lived as pinning one's hopes on a government response to an ever deteriorating economic reality has not proven a winning strategy over these last 18 months.

Fannie (FNM) and Freddie (FRE) are knee deep in the muck and are tightening lending standards at the absolute wrong time in the cycle. Even with explicit government guarantees these guys are wrapped in a cloak of fear and doubt.

One of the top indicators that I look at is the Case-Schiller index. I like it because it tracks housing prices in the top metropolitan areas. These are the sections of the country that had the biggest gains and are now experiencing the biggest losses. This is where the real pain is taking place and, when the dust settles, where a killing can be made during the next boom.

The stage is set for the Fed to leave rates unchanged. The Federal Open Market Committee will hold a one-day meeting on Wednesday, May 9. The weaker-than-expected April jobs report combined with the better-than-expected first-quarter productivity report alleviates concerns about inflation.

The problem with the economic data, however, is that it continues to point to an unsteady pace of expansion. Job and wage growth slowed in April according to the Department of Labor, yet the Institute for Supply Management’s April manufacturing and services indexes suggested notable improvements in employment. Core rates of inflation are tame, but food prices are higher and prices at the pump are obnoxiously high.
