- Tuesday, April 2, 7:52 AM Exxon Mobil (XOM) and BHP Billiton (BHP) plan to build the world's biggest floating natural gas processing plant to tap into the Scarborough natural gas field off Western Australia. They're seeking government approval for the multibillion dollar project, and targeting first production as early as 2020. The move is a vote of confidence in the untried technology, which energy companies hope will help cut costs. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Monday, April 1, 12:15 PM Dominion Diamond (DDC) - formerly Harry Winston Diamond - says it has secured all necessary regulatory approvals to acquire BHP’s Ekati diamond operations in Canada’s Northwest Territories as well as associated diamond sorting and sales facilities in Yellowknife, Canada, and Antwerp, Belgium. Comment! [Commodities]
- Monday, March 25, 5:39 PM South Africa's energy regulator says it will begin a review next month of a power agreement set up the 1990s between state-owned Eskom Holdings and BHP Billiton (BHP). In the 1990s, South Africa had excess energy capacity and was courting energy-intensive users to spur industrial development; today, the country faces a potential electricity crisis. 1 Comment [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 25, 2:45 PM China says growth in its crude steel production this year likely will be a more moderate 4% compared with the breakneck pace of much of the past decade. The slow recovery of developed economies means global demand will grow only gradually, the country's top planning agency says. The world's top three iron ore miners, which seem to expect better, are slipping: VALE -1.3%, RIO -1.5%, BHP -1%. 1 Comment [Commodities, Global & FX, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 19, 7:33 AM Rio Tinto (RIO) is downgraded to Conviction Sell at Goldman, which notes the company's overwhelming dependence on iron ore prices. "We see minimal free cash flow and significant earnings declines if the company goes ahead with the Pilbara 360 project in a declining iron ore price environment." Shares -3.2% premarket. BHP -1.8%. Earlier: Goldman cuts its iron ore price forecast. 7 Comments [Commodities, On the Move]
- Monday, March 18, 11:49 AM The slump in global commodities and spiraling costs have pummeled BHP Billiton (BHP -0.8%) over the past year, and the miner briefly lost its status today as the most valuable company on Australia's stock exchange in favor of Commonwealth Bank. Bank stocks have become more attractive, as a rising outlook for the domestic economy has perked up profits; bank shares now account for a record 30% of the ASX. 4 Comments [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, March 13, 6:39 AM BHP (BHP) has denied any wrongdoing associated with its sponsorship of the Beijing Olympics, saying that it believes its "activities complied with all applicable law." BHP's comments came after Australian police and U.S. authorities opened an investigation into bribery allegations against BHP in relation to the games, which took place in 2008. Shares -0.2% premarket. Comment! [Commodities, Top Stories]
- Tuesday, March 12, 11:56 AM BHP Billiton (BHP) is the subject of a joint U.S.-Australian criminal bribery investigation into alleged inducements, hospitality or gifts given to foreign officials including Chinese dignitaries, as part of a multimillion-dollar hospitality and sponsorship program for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Authorities allege BHP broke several laws, including the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. 2 Comments [Commodities]
- Tuesday, March 12, 9:57 AM Diamond mines in Canada and oil fields in Pakistan are among a $35B basket of non-core assets BHP Billiton (BHP) and Rio Tinto (RIO) could consider selling to adapt to tougher times, Deutsche Bank analysts say. The sale process would take two to three years, drive down both company’s debt levels 12%-20% and leave room for a 10%-plus rise in their dividend payout ratio in 2014. 1 Comment [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 11, 5:13 PM Workers at Colombian coal exporter Cerrejon (XSRAF.PK, AAUKY.PK, BHP) sign a collective bargaining agreement effectively ending a month-old strike that hobbled coal production at the one of the world's top producers. Cerrejon produced 34.3M metric tons of coal in 2012, and is investing $1.3B to boost output to 40M tons/year by 2015. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Thursday, March 7, 3:51 AM BHP Billiton (BHP) has become the first of the world's top three miners to respond to Chinese allegations that they and some traders had manipulated the market for iron ore to bring about a rebound in prices. "We aim to improve transparency by increasing liquidity in the spot market," BHP said. Rio Tinto (RIO) and Vale (VALE) have yet to respond to the accusations. Comment! [Commodities]
- Monday, March 4, 11:47 AM The labor union representing ~5K workers at Colombia's top coal producer Cerrejon (XSRAF.PK, AAUKY.PK, BHP) says it reached a preliminary agreement that would end a 25-day strike. Cerrejon, which normally produces 100K tons/day of coal, hasn't produced or exported any coal since the strike began Feb. 7. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, February 26, 10:10 AM UBS sees iron ore prices slumping at least 50% by Q3 to their lowest level since 2009, as China boosts production and global supply climbs. Australia is set to deliver ~80% of total new seaborne supply this year, most of it in H2 as China has “sufficient” ore and steel production declines. But first, rates may jump as a severe cyclone nears Port Hedland, the world’s largest bulk export facility. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Monday, February 25, 4:46 PM "It's time to stop building," Glencore's (GLCNF.PK) Ivan Glasenberg says in berating mining CEOs for the glut of new mines that has whacked profits. Stalling investment in new mines will mean "we will be late to invest. So, who cares? We’ll be late and we’ll have to invest in five years’ time. It’ll take us three years to build the mine but we could hopefully have an eight-year run." Comment! [Commodities]
- Sunday, February 24, 4:02 AM While demand in China will remain strong, BHP (BHP) forecasts, the growth in mineral prices will slow to 2-4% a year over the next five years from 15-20% at the moment. As a result, BHP will continue to cut costs, says new CEO Andrew Mackenzie, although he also he plans to extend Marius Kloppers' record "of sector-leading returns" to shareholders. 5 Comments [Commodities]
- Friday, February 22, 8:33 AM The risk is high that a tropical low off Australia's northwest coast will strengthen into a cyclone by Sunday as it moves closer to the Pilbara mining belt which produces nearly half of the world's seaborne iron ore. The area also is home to two of the country's largest gas production facilities, and oil from offshore fields contribute about a third of Australia's 390K bbl/day of output. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
