- Friday, November 30, 2012, 10:00 AM Walter Energy (WLT +4.4%) shares surge in early trading as renewed chatter of takeover interest from BHP Billiton (BHP) makes the rounds. WLT was the subject of rumored interest from the likes of BHP, Rio Tinto and others late last year (I, II). Comment! [Energy, M&A, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 8:28 AM BHP says it is looking inside and outside the company as well as using external advisers to help with succession plans for outgoing CEO Marius Kloppers. BHP has not said when it expects Kloppers to leave, but identified succession planning for all its senior executives as a top priority following a report that a search for a replacement had begun. Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 4:44 PM Chevron (CVX) and ConocoPhillips (COP) are the top bidders in the U.S. auction for drilling rights in the western Gulf of Mexico. CVX submitts the top sum of high bids at $56M, and pays the top bid for a single tract ($17.2M). COP submits the most high bids, 62, worth $52M overall. Exxon's (XOM) four successful bids are in deepwater blocks that will take years to develop. Comment! [Energy]
- Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 11:26 AM Australia’s resources sector has been its barrier to the global economic slump, but the country's minister of mines warns of a "challenging" cost inflation environment that has seen three of seven LNG projects announce average cost increases of 20%-plus and a fourth conduct a review. But the Down Under resource boom likely will continue for at least a while, Clyde Russell writes. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 2:39 PM Alcoa (AA) says it's considering buying aluminum assets from BHP Billiton (BHP) and Rio Tinto (RIO) as it expects demand to grow ~6.5%/year for the next decade. BHP and Rio have either sold or halted development of aluminum projects following a decline in the price of the metal and a shift in focus toward more profitable commodities. Comment! [Commodities]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 4:41 AM BHP Billiton (BHP) is considering several internal candidates for a potential successor to CEO Marius Kloppers, but it has also hired a recruiter to help it search for external prospects, including those from outside the mining sector, board director Lindsay Maxsted says. BHP has yet to say when Kloppers will step down. Comment! [Commodities]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 8:17 AM BHP says it will focus more on cost cutting after the drop in iron ore prices, but still expects to drive production increases at its Pilbara operations in Western Australia. BHP plans to milk as much as possible out of its existing inner harbor, rail line and mines, increasing its capacity in smaller steps without huge capital outlays, while reaching production of 260M tons. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 9:57 AM Harry Winston Diamond (HWD -2.1%) agrees to buy BHP Billiton’s (BHP -1.2%) diamonds business for $500M, as BHP elects to get out of the diamond business because it could not build up enough scale to make it worthwhile. The deal includes BHP’s 80% stake in the rich Ekati diamond mine in the Northwest Territories, along with its diamond marketing business. Comment! [Commodities, M&A, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 8:58 AM BHP Billiton (BHP) gets another four years to decide whether it will proceed with the expansion of its Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine after the government of South Australia state extended until Oct. 2016 an agreement with BHP covering expansion work. BHP had postponed a decision in the face of weaker commodity prices and higher capital costs. BHP -1.3% premarket. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 11:38 AM BHP Billiton (BHP) is considering shipping some of its U.S. shale gas reserves to Asia, spurred by interest from Japanese power utilities seeking shale gas, which sells for about a quarter of the price of LNG imports. It is becoming more attractive for BHP to export gas from the U.S. rather than from western Australia, where LNG ventures are struggling with escalating costs. 3 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 8:52 AM Losses at BHP Billiton's (BHP) U.S. shale-gas operation Petrohawk Energy deepened in Q3 due to continued weakness in natural gas prices. BHP reports a loss from continuing operations before income tax of $211M for the nine months to Sept. 30 for Petrohawk vs. a profit of $201M in the year-earlier period. Comment! [Commodities, Energy, Earnings]
- Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 5:13 PM BHP Billiton (BHP) has quietly started looking for a successor to CEO Marius Kloppers, FT reports, in what could herald a further shake-up in global mining industry leadership. BHP likely wants to avoid a situation similar to Anglo American, where Cynthia Carroll announced her departure and the company has just started to look for a new chief executive. 1 Comment [Commodities]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 2:43 PM BHP Billiton (BHP +1.6%) says it expects to file all necessary regulatory documents by the end of 2014 to develop a new harbor at its Western Australian iron ore operations, though it will prioritize other iron ore-related projects. CEO Marius Kloppers declines to comment on a report it intends to sell its Pinto Valley copper mine in Arizona. Comment! [Commodities, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 12:06 PM BHP Billiton (BHP -2.7%) reportedly is exploring a sale of its Pinto Valley copper mine in Arizona, as it seeks to streamline its portfolio of assets amid a weaker outlook for commodities prices. Pinto Valley could produce ~$300M in annual earnings if it were running at full tilt, but with a limited mine life and uncertainty about whether it will return to full production, some analysts think it might fetch less than $1B. Comment! [Commodities]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 11:21 AM BHP Billiton (BHP) continues to move forward with the massive Jansen potash mine, but BMO Capital argues that building Jansen is BHP’s worst option if it wants to diversify into potash - even the whole concept could be a mistake. Jansen could put pressure on prices, the firm says, because it would bring more product into a market that's already well supplied right now. Comment! [Commodities]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 11:19 AM Workers at BHP Billiton's (BHP +0.7%) eastern Australia coal mines vote to accept a new workplace agreement, bringing to an end a dispute that had sparked months of rolling strikes, denting production and prompting the JV with Mitsubishi to declare force majeure in April. Also, BHP says it is not restoring curtailed U.S. onshore gas production despite a recent rise in prices. Comment! [Commodities, Global & FX]
