- Thursday, December 20, 2012, 2:52 PM The Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 could soon get undercut by Acer's Iconia B1, a 7" Android tablet just approved by the FCC and, reportedly set to sell for a mere $99. With 8GB of storage and a 1024x600 display, the B1 won't win any spec sheet crowns, but it could be an adequate option for many low-end/emerging markets buyers, or those looking to get the family a second or third tablet. It arrives at a time when Android (GOOG) is picking up tablet share thanks to its pricing edge. ($99 Nexus tablet) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 8:51 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) says its Nook HD devices are now available for sale at all Wal-Mart stores. It's a nice little coup for the company with both Wal-Mart and Target no longer selling Amazon Kindle products. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 6:34 PM Though Texas Instruments (TXN) just said it's seeing healthy demand from the e-reader market, IHS iSuppli's estimates depict an industry in freefall thanks to soaring tablet demand. The research firm predicts e-reader shipments will fall 36% this year to 14.9M, and drop another 27% next year to 10.9M. Meanwhile, IDC expects 122M tablet shipments in 2012. One positive datapoint: Amazon's (AMZN) favorably-reviewed Kindle Paperwhite is still out of stock until Dec. 20. (Pew Survey) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 11:52 AM The forecast for a death spiral in sales of e-readers doesn't mean the devices will become obsolete, according to paidContent's Laura Hazard Owen. While many uni-tasking devices face a grim future, e-readers still have benefits that could help support the segment somewhere in the 5M-10M shipment. With Amazon (AMZN +0.2%) and Barnes & Noble (BKS -0.1%) looking at digital content sales as a source for profits, expect a fresh product cycle to continue. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 12:48 PM Texas Instruments (TXN +3.8%) is up after providing a guidance update that's being received favorably in light of industry and company-specific issues. During its update call, TI noted the wireless processor/connectivity business it's exiting will post a Q4 loss on revenue of ~$200M, and that those sales should be gone by 2014. Computing, industrial, and telecom infrastructure chip demand is also weak, though console and e-reader demand is healthy - that last bit could be a positive for AMZN and BKS. Chip stocks are outperforming (SOXX +2%). (Audi deal) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 9:40 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +2.2%) trades higher after getting pegged by Barron's as a top stock pick for 2013. The read on BKS is current valuation doesn't take into account that the Nook unit is holding its own against heavyweights Amazon and Apple. Comment!
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 7:56 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) cuts the price of the Nook Simple Touch e-reader by 20% to $79 with competition picking up. With digital content a focus, the slash on hardware prices by the company wasn't wholly unexpected. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 11:13 AM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS +1.8%) trade higher after Schottenfield Group sends a letter to the company's board calling for an immediate spinoff of Nook Media into a separate company. "We believe the company's strategy to deploy 100 percent of its cash flow over the past three years into the Nook has been disastrous." Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 4:06 PM While PC sales falter, IDC's tablet forecasts keep rising: the firm now expects 122.3M tablet shipments in 2012, up from 117.1M in September, 107.4M in June, and 106.1M in March. The iPad (AAPL) is expected to account for 53.8% (65.8M) of those shipments, down from a prior 60%, Android (GOOG) tablets 42.7% (52.2M), and Windows (MSFT) tablets just 2.9% (3.5M). IDC now expects 282.7M shipments in 2016 (261.4M prior), but as the 2012 forecast changes show, that's pretty hard for anyone to guess. (Barclays) Comment! [Tech]

[On the Move] - Thursday, November 29, 2012, 10:34 AM Heard on Barnes & Noble's (BKS -11.2%) earnings call: 1) Execs say market share in digital was maintained or grew a tad. In the U.K., the company is a solidly in second place. 2) The firm's College business is a focus with plans to pick up the pace it adds schools. 3) The Nook segment contribution to EBITDA is significant with margins growing or holding steady along with sales. 4) On the Microsoft investment, execs say they feel comfortable with current plans but don't tip off any details. 5) A year after Borders faded into oblivion, BKS notes it still sees a lift from the narrowed market. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 9:06 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) on FQ3: The company gives a little visibility on the Black Friday weekend rush, saying Nook unit sales doubled across all channels compared to a similar period a year ago. Of note, the promotional activity of Wal-Mart and Target is noted as a sales driver. BKS -1.4% premarket. (PR) Comment!
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 9:03 AM More on Barnes & Noble's (BKS) FQ2: Store closures drove the firm's revenue haul lower than from a year ago but a 38% Y/Y jump in Nook Digital Content sales is where the future looks promising. EBITDA is higher in the retail segment, to partially offset a slip in College and lower EBITDA losses at Nook. Conference call scheduled for 9:00 AM (webcast). BKS -1.6% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]

BKS opened and traded around $26 on MSFT deal. Now at $22. Predictions for close? $16, 18, $20, or $25? - View all 1 replies
-
bigfoot: I predict it will close between $22 and $23, but fall to $21 by the end of the week.

Really?? Barnes & Noble (BKS) currently up 63% "on Microsoft deal." Don't you think that a little excessive? http://on.mktw.net/IA0uGs - View all 3 replies

Josh Krause: Stock was being circled by vultures for imminent bankruptcy. Whole lot of shorts get scared with $300M cash injections by major players. -
mun2000: agree with you here we are in the world of OZ everything is posible short time after a while the pumps lose power and will fall

WOW. Huge squeeze in BKS. 39% of the float (from what I read) was short before MSFT deal. - View all 0 replies
