- Monday, December 10, 2012, 9:40 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +2.2%) trades higher after getting pegged by Barron's as a top stock pick for 2013. The read on BKS is current valuation doesn't take into account that the Nook unit is holding its own against heavyweights Amazon and Apple. Comment!
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 7:56 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) cuts the price of the Nook Simple Touch e-reader by 20% to $79 with competition picking up. With digital content a focus, the slash on hardware prices by the company wasn't wholly unexpected. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 11:13 AM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS +1.8%) trade higher after Schottenfield Group sends a letter to the company's board calling for an immediate spinoff of Nook Media into a separate company. "We believe the company's strategy to deploy 100 percent of its cash flow over the past three years into the Nook has been disastrous." Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, December 5, 2012, 4:06 PM While PC sales falter, IDC's tablet forecasts keep rising: the firm now expects 122.3M tablet shipments in 2012, up from 117.1M in September, 107.4M in June, and 106.1M in March. The iPad (AAPL) is expected to account for 53.8% (65.8M) of those shipments, down from a prior 60%, Android (GOOG) tablets 42.7% (52.2M), and Windows (MSFT) tablets just 2.9% (3.5M). IDC now expects 282.7M shipments in 2016 (261.4M prior), but as the 2012 forecast changes show, that's pretty hard for anyone to guess. (Barclays) Comment! [Tech]

[On the Move] - Thursday, November 29, 2012, 10:34 AM Heard on Barnes & Noble's (BKS -11.2%) earnings call: 1) Execs say market share in digital was maintained or grew a tad. In the U.K., the company is a solidly in second place. 2) The firm's College business is a focus with plans to pick up the pace it adds schools. 3) The Nook segment contribution to EBITDA is significant with margins growing or holding steady along with sales. 4) On the Microsoft investment, execs say they feel comfortable with current plans but don't tip off any details. 5) A year after Borders faded into oblivion, BKS notes it still sees a lift from the narrowed market. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 9:06 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) on FQ3: The company gives a little visibility on the Black Friday weekend rush, saying Nook unit sales doubled across all channels compared to a similar period a year ago. Of note, the promotional activity of Wal-Mart and Target is noted as a sales driver. BKS -1.4% premarket. (PR) Comment!
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 9:03 AM More on Barnes & Noble's (BKS) FQ2: Store closures drove the firm's revenue haul lower than from a year ago but a 38% Y/Y jump in Nook Digital Content sales is where the future looks promising. EBITDA is higher in the retail segment, to partially offset a slip in College and lower EBITDA losses at Nook. Conference call scheduled for 9:00 AM (webcast). BKS -1.6% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 8:39 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS): FQ2 EPS of -$0.04 beats by $0.02. Revenue of $1.88B (-0.4% Y/Y) misses by $30M. Shares +2% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, On the Move]

- Monday, November 26, 2012, 3:16 PM The first Cyber Monday sales figures are pretty encouraging. IBM estimates early sales rose 24% Y/Y, and ChannelAdvisor claims its client sales via Amazon (AMZN +1.4%) and eBay (EBAY +5%) are up 52% and 57% Y/Y, respectively. IBM and comScore have already published strong figures for online Black Friday sales, as surging mobile activity helps boost demand, perhaps at the expense of traditional retailers. (holiday season forecast) 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, November 21, 2012, 4:14 PM After pegging Y/Y growth at 16% for the first 18 days of November, comScore thinks U.S. e-commerce spending will rise 17% Y/Y in November and December. That's above the 15% holiday season growth estimated by Forrester, and also the 15% growth assigned by comScore for Q3. Mobile activity seems to be accelerating a long-term trends: an October survey of U.S. smartphone/tablet owners found 55% claiming they plan to use their devices to shop this holiday season. (eBay mobile use) Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 8:22 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) announces the Nook for Windows 8 app is available for download in the Windows store. The app marks the first digital product launched under the partnership between Microsoft and B&N, a union that still has investors guessing as to the ultimate direction it will take. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 6:06 PM U.S. e-commerce sales rose 15% Y/Y in Q3, per comScore. Though down a bit from Q1's 17%, that growth rate is even with Q2's 15% and higher than for any quarter from 2008-2011. Electronics, digital content, tickets, apparel, and software outperformed. Bricks-and-mortar retailers won't like the fact comScore's retail survey for the quarter found 37% of respondents claiming they engaged in showrooming, up from 32% in the prior 2 quarters. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 11:23 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +4.8%) trades higher after CEO William Lynch issues a positive outlook for the company. The exec's counter to the death of its brick and mortar store argument is the retail bookstore chain is gaining market share and growing profits. On Nook products, Lynch notes the strong pre-order demand and tips the company to see a strong holiday season. Is B&N undervalued? Lynch points to EBITDA growth and highlights the pending Microsoft deal as a value proposition. (Bloomberg interview) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
