- Monday, October 15, 2012, 4:05 AM Amazon (AMZN) is in negotiations to acquire TI's (TXN) cellular-chip operations in a deal that would be worth billions of dollars, the Calcalist Israeli newspaper reports. TI, whose chips are used in Kindle devices and Barnes & Nobles' (BKS) Nooks, has already said it won't invest in supporting its customers' plans for smartphones and tablets to the same extent as previously. 9 Comments [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Friday, October 12, 2012, 3:32 PM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS -4.7%) dip with word out that the iPad Mini will be unleashed later this month to round off the intense competition in the tablet space. While the company remains optimistic on the prospects for its digital bookstore, the first step is bringing more customers into the B&N ecosystem. (compact tablet specs) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 11, 2012, 10:03 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +5.4%) trades higher a day after a highly-anticipated presentation at the Liberty Media Investor Meeting. Though the showstopper was the revelation that the company expects its Nook and college bookstore businesses to kick up $3B this year, plans to hit nine new international markts with its digital bookstore by next June also raised a few eyebrows. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer]
- Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 3:18 PM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS +6.7%) spike higher as execs presenting at the Liberty Media Investor Meeting (webcast) strike a positive tone. Though Nook revenue is pegged at $3B for 2012, the rosy B&N estimate is drawing its share of skeptics with the firm's track record of shooting too high with its guidance a backdrop. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 11:21 AM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS +3.3%) poke out a gain with the firm's execs slated to speak at Liberty Media's (LMCA -0.5%) annual investor meeting (webcast) later today. With Liberty Media still holding close to 17% of BKS, a bit of buzz is floating around that something could be unveiled at the affair. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, October 8, 2012, 11:52 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +3%) CEO William Lynch feels good about the bookseller's ability to grow in the tablet market, saying preorders for the latest Nook devices are the highest he has seen. Lynch says there can be more than one winner in tablets, and BKS will have more holiday distribution at Target and Wal-Mart than ever - two huge channels that aren't carrying Amazon's Kindle. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, October 4, 2012, 11:06 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +4.6%) announces it completed its strategic partnership with Microsoft that includes a tidy $300M investment into Nook Media. The company says it won't comment on whether or not a strategic review of Nook Media will result in a strategic separation or the creation of a stand-alone public company, although that's the popular theory with analysts. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 5:03 PM Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle Paperwhite e-reader is sold out until November: the e-commerce giant's site is showing a shipping time of 4-6 weeks for both the Wi-Fi and 3G models. Earlier this week, reviewers gushed over the Paperwhite's front-lit display, with nearly all of them calling it superior to that of the Nook Glowlight (BKS). 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 9:50 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS -0.7%) reiterates that it won't sell Amazon titles at its stores after a bit of a flareup yesterday when books from an Amazon entity showed up in NYC stores. The flap demonstrates to a degree the difficulty the company might have if Amazon-published titles become highly popular. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, October 1, 2012, 6:26 PM Though gadget reviewers weren't thrilled with the Kindle Fire HD, most of them love Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle Paperwhite e-reader. The Verge scores it a 9 out of 10, and declares its lighting more "uniform and well distributed" than that of Barnes & Noble's (BKS) Nook GlowLight. "Forget everything else, this is the e-reader you want," writes Gizmodo. The big question for Amazon is how many consumers want e-readers right now, as tablets continue hurting demand. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, October 1, 2012, 8:06 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) cuts the price on its Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight from $139 to $119 in order to match the cost of Amazon's new illuminated e-reader entry. With the Glowlight-enabled Nook now at pricing parity with the Kindle Paperwhite, the company hopes it can win over consumers on its merits in front of the holiday shopping season. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 6:45 PM Barnes & Noble's (BKS +6%) Nook HD tablets make Amazon's (AMZN -1.1%) Kindle Fire HD look like "a dud," thinks Steve Kovach after trying out B&N's hardware. B&N's tablets contain better displays, Kovach argues, and the Nook's OS (a modified version of Android) now provides a "much cleaner look" than before. The first reviews for the Fire HD weren't too kind either. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 12:17 PM Now that details are out from Barnes & Noble (BKS +2.2%) on its two new HD e-readers, Barclays Capital's Alan Rifkin has a fresh take on the Underweight-rated stock. He says the pricing for the tablets makes it clear that the company's focus will remains on content instead of trying to kick up any profits from device sales. This trend will continue to pressure margins, even more so with content channels increasingly crowded with new players. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, September 26, 2012, 6:05 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS) will release two high-definition versions of its Nook tablet just ahead of the crucial holiday shopping period. A 7-inch tablet priced at $199 and a 9-inch version selling for $269 are priced at or below new offerings from rival Amazon. CEO William Lynch says the company has placed its largest device orders ever as he fully expects the company to grow market share by Christmas. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 10:04 AM Enthusiasm over Barnes & Noble's (BKS +3.7%) new Nook streaming service helps shares break out of a narrow trading range to reach monthly highs. Though the initiative will clearly help Nook products try to keep pace with Amazon's line of Kindles, Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey says that in the end the company will have to "sell everything" with their devices to stay in the game. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, September 25, 2012, 9:19 AM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS) trade 2.9% higher premarket after the company sticks its toe into the streaming pool. The plan from the company includes the ability for customers to view Nook Video content purchased on non-Nook devices using digital rights stored in the cloud. It also appears that Nook Video will include content from HBO and Starz, as well as integrate with UltraViolet to give customers access to their physical and Blu-ray movies. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]

Todd Johnson: Ocean Man - no problem. If I were the SEC or Fed Budget Director, then I would be sending early "thank you" holiday cards early to MO, et al -
Todd Johnson: OZ - your tech abilities are likely 3-levels higher than me. I'll let others determine what 1-level equals. ;)
