- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 8:11 AM After Barnes & Noble (BKS) broke out results for its digital business for the first time, the firm's misfortunes are even more self-evident. Not only were costs greater than expected for its Nook segment, but sales were off 11% Y/Y due to pricing pressure and third party retailer returns. As for hopes that a major investment from Microsoft will save the day, earlier this week a new competing tablet was unveiled by the company. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 5:38 PM Barnes & Noble (BKS -4%) finished lower following its FQ4 report, as the Street registered its dismay with declining Nook hardware sales. The results suggest B&N is a victim of Apple (AAPL) on multiple fronts: not only is the iPad making life difficult for all would-be tablet rivals, it's quickly eating into the e-reader market. IDC recently predicted e-reader shipments would fall slightly in 2012, while tablet shipments grow nearly 60%. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 8:42 AM More on Barnes & Noble's (BKS) FQ4: Retail sales up 0.5% Y/Y to $1.053B and College sales gained 5.7% to $228M. Nook hardware revenue declined 10.5% to $164M, while NOOK content sales were up 65%. Says Newco partnership with Microsoft still on track. Shares +0.1% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 8:35 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS): FQ4 EPS of -$0.98 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $1.38B (+0.4% Y/Y) misses by $60M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 2:27 PM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS -0.7%) have settled down after a bit of wild trading this morning as rumors popped up that an announcement planned for later today by Microsoft would involve the company. Though execs with Barnes & Noble denied the original reports, Computer World notes that they didn't go as far as to say it didn't involve the company in any fashion whatsoever. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 10:07 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS -1.1%) falls back from an early gain after the company says that it won't be part of Microsoft's tablet announcement today. Shares were fueled in early trading by a TechCrunch story that speculated the company would be front and center in Microsoft's plans for its next tablet. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 8:57 AM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS) run up a 7.6% premarket gain off of speculation that the company will announce a partnership with Microsoft to develop a tablet. The spin is that the company's NewCo subsidiary will supply the content for a Microsoft-charged device as the company subtly backs off from competing against the new partnership. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 6:43 AM Microsoft (MSFT) and Barnes & Noble (BKS) will announce a strategic partnership to build a tablet/e-reader focused on entertainment, according to sources at TechCrunch. It's rumored that the tablet could be the first non-Xbox device to have Xbox live streaming potential. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 7:26 AM Barnes & Noble's (BKS) Nook still has some fight left in it, as a report from ad network Chitika shows that its share of traffic beat out the numbers generated by the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle Fire. A win is a win, although in context, the two companies are essentially fighting over tables scraps with iPads generating just over 91% of all tablet traffic. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 6:05 PM Thanks to strong iPad (AAPL) sales, IDC is once more hiking its 2012 tablet market forecast, this time to 107.4M units from a prior 106.1M. It's also raising its 2013 forecast to 142.8M units from 137.4M. The iPad is now expected to grow its share to 62.5% in 2012 from 58.2%, while Android (Kindle Fire/Nook Tablet included) is expected to fall to 36.5% from 38.7%. Also, in another example of tablet cannibalization, e-reader shipments are expected to fall slightly Y/Y to 28M. (iSuppli) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 5:41 PM Barnes & Noble (BKS) confirms it settled a shareholder lawsuit that arose from its 2009 acquisition of a college bookstore chain owned by chairman Leonard Riggio and his wife. WSJ reports Riggio agreed to a $22.75M reduction in the $596M purchase price, of which $150M was still owed by BKS in the form of a loan from Riggio. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 1:46 PM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS +2.6%) perk up after a report breaks tipping off that the company will settle a lawsuit over the sale of the company's textbook unit. Comment! [On the Move, Consumer]
- Thursday, June 7, 2012, 9:38 AM Barnes & Noble (BKS +1.1%) says in a written statement to the SEC that the proposed e-book antitrust settlement is overreaching and would negatively affect retailers and authors. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 1:19 PM In spite of low-end competition from the Kindle Fire (AMZN), Nook Tablet (BKS), and many other Android-based rivals, iSuppli sees the iPad (AAPL) increasing its tablet share to 61% in 2012 from 55% in 2011. The firm, which adds its "supply-side sources" indicate a smaller iPad will be arriving, predicts overall tablet shipments will grow 85% to 126.6M, and reach 206M in 2013. IDC believes the iPad gained share in Q1, and previously forecast 106.1M 2012 tablet sales. 3 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 11:33 AM Shares of Barnes & Noble (BKS -2.2%) move lower as a SEC filing revealing that Jana Partners unloaded a 1M block of its sizable position at a profitable $24.42 a share starts to grab notice. 3 Comments [On the Move, Consumer]
