- Friday, May 17, 2:21 PM Tesoro (TSO +5.3%) says the FTC approved its purchase of BP's 240K bbl/day Carson, Calif., refinery and other assets. The commission found the deal would not substantially lessen competition among seven refiners for gasoline in California, the largest U.S. gasoline market. Tesoro Logistics (TLLP +3.5%) will acquire the first portion of Carson logistics assets from TSO for $640M. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Friday, May 17, 11:58 AM Major oil producers launch a joint program to beef up their Arctic oil spill response plan in a bid to convince the Arctic Council they are ready for large-scale development in the region. There are plenty of doubters, of course, and incidents such as BP 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill and Shell's recent problems north of Alaska with two drill ships don't help. 5 Comments [Energy]
- Friday, May 17, 9:56 AM The U.K.'s Serious Fraud Office says it is "urgently reviewing" whether it has the authority to investigate allegations of price fixing in the oil market, after unannounced inspections earlier this week by EU antitrust authorities of BP, Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) and Statoil (STO). The SFO believes it could be the appropriate body to investigate such allegations. 5 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, May 17, 8:12 AM The deadline for claims against BP related to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill is 11 months away, but the overseer responsible for paying the claims says he is already bracing for a late surge in filings. Of more than 165K claims filed as of May 15, nearly 25% have been determined eligible for payments worth ~$3.2B, and 200K claims seems likely before all is said and done. - Thursday, May 16, 2:46 PM Tesoro (TSO +0.8%) may take ownership of BP's (BP -0.2%) 240K bbl/day Carson, Calif., refinery and other assets as early as June 1, Reuters reports. Federal and state regulators have been reviewing TSO's planned $2.5B purchase of the refinery and assets since the deal was announced in August. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Thursday, May 16, 2:13 PM U.K. government officials say BP (BP -0.2%) has not sought help from PM David Cameron in reducing compensation claims related to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Either way, a U.S. President has no sway over the independent U.S. judiciary. A BBC report cited BP sources who worry that cash leakage from compensation claims could put its dividend at risk and make it vulnerable to a takeover (also). 2 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, May 16, 5:59 AM BP is calling in the big guns for help mitigating claims tied to the 2010 Gulf oil spill. The company wants British Prime Minister David Cameron to talk with U.S. officials regarding escalating payment claims, some of which BP says are "fictitious" and increasingly "absurd." The company has set aside more than $8B to cover so-called business economic losses. 9 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, May 15, 5:36 PM Fitch Ratings warns of massive fines along the lines of UBS' $1.5B Libor settlement if an EC probe into oil price manipulation finds any wrongdoing. While oil company balance sheets likely would absorb any fines thanks to big cash reserves, an offender "could face longer-term risks from damage to reputation," Fitch says, noting BP's exclusion from some business in the Gulf of Mexico after the Macondo spill. 4 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, May 15, 5:21 PM Better-than-expected results from Brazil's oil exploration rights auction show operators were undeterred by Brazil’s local-content rules or Chevron's treatment in the wake of the Frade oil spill. In fact, CVX was one of the winning bidders, joining the likes of XOM, BP and PBR. The auction put things in perspective: Brazil has huge potential, and is a much less risky place than Nigeria, Russia or Venezuela. 1 Comment [Energy, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, May 15, 11:50 AM Seth Klarman added two new positions to Baupost in Q1, with Elan (ELN) now 3.5% of his portfolio and DirecTV (DTV) 0.38%. He added to already major positions in BP, AIG, ROVI, and IDIX, and completely sold out of GNW, and ANV. 1 Comment
- Tuesday, May 14, 3:08 PM Exxon (XOM +0.8%) teams with OGX (OGXPY.PK) to win deepwater exploration blocks in Brazil's promising Potiguar region at the country's first energy auction in five years. OGX will pay 20M reais ($10M) for the rights to one block, and the OGX-XOM consortium agree to pay 81.9M reais for another. Total (TOT) gains access to operate five blocks in the Amazon basin together with partners BP and Petrobras (PBR). Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 14, 12:34 PM Add BP and Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) to those whose offices are raided by European authorities as part of a probe into suspected anti-competitive agreements related to submission of prices to Platts (MHP), the world's leading oil pricing agency. Even small distortions of assessed prices may have a huge impact on prices of crude oil, refined products and biofuels, the European Commission says. (earlier) 4 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 14, 11:05 AM BP expects to start its proposed deepwater drilling campaign off southern Australia in late 2015 or early 2016 and to obtain a drilling rig before the end of this year. Costs for the first stage of the program in the Great Australian Bight are estimated at ~$600M. The plans have sparked concerns among environmental groups, which say ~85% of the species in the Bight can’t be found anywhere else in the world. 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 14, 9:05 AM Statoil (STO) signs a farm-in agreement with BP acquiring a 30% equity share in four exploration licenses offshore south Australia, providing STO "access to a vast, underexplored area with high-impact potential." The work program includes drilling up to four wells within the largely untested license area. BP will continue to operate the exploration licenses. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Tuesday, May 7, 11:15 AM BP says it failed to increase production at Azerbaijan’s largest oilfield in Q1 even after coming under fire from the country’s president. The Azeri field in Azerbaijan’s section of the Caspian Sea produced 662K bbl/day) of oil in Q1, down 8.4% Y/Y. Meanwhile, the offshore natural gas field of Shah Deniz, also led by BP, increased production 21% to 2.42B cubic meters. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Monday, May 6, 3:39 PM More from BP's Lamar McKay: BP expects its stake in Rosneft to flourish into direct partnerships to tap Russia's oil wealth, and will result in cost synergies and immediate exploration and development benefits since many of TNK-BP's assets are contiguous to Rosneft's fields. The partnership with Rosneft is "a bigger platform" from which to operate vs. TNK-BP, "the start of a new relationship," McKay says. (earlier) 2 Comments [Energy, Global & FX]
