- Monday, June 25, 2012, 1:40 PM Spreadtrum (SPRD -5.4%) and Broadcom (BRCM -5.5%) underperform on an ugly day for chip stocks (SOXX -2.9%) after MediaTek agrees to buy fellow Taiwanese chipmaker MStar for $3.8B. MediaTek and Spreadtrum are fierce competitors in the Chinese mobile baseband chip market, and Broadcom competes with MediaTek in both the baseband and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth "combo chip" markets. MStar also sells plenty of mobile chips, and that could be heightening competitive concerns. 2 Comments [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 11:35 AM More on Samsung: Reviews pour in for the U.S. version of the Galaxy S III, as domestic sales commence. David Pogue calls it "a bright, beautiful star." Mashable's Peter Pachal likes the phone's S Beam file-sharing feature, but isn't crazy about its voice-recognition tech (uses NUAN's Vlingo software). Walt Mossberg argues the phone's real impact comes from its iPhone-like ubiquity, a first for an Android device. QCOM, BRCM, and SWKS are among the chipmakers that benefit from U.S. sales. (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 11:36 AM Smartphone vendors Samsung, Huawei, ZTE, HTC, Nokia, and Research In Motion have slashed component orders by 5%-20% due to "an unexpected slowdown in smartphone sales," believes Jefferies' Peter Misek after conducting supply chain checks. If true, that's a negative for both phone and component vendors. Separately, Raymond James' Tavis McCourt is cutting estimates for Qualcomm (QCOM) on a belief 2Q/3Q phone volumes "could be flattish from 1Q levels." (also) 5 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 15, 2012, 11:47 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) and Broadcom (BRCM) have begun producing 4G baseband and Wi-Fi chips, respectively, for the next-gen iPhone (AAPL) via TSMC's (TSM) 28nm process, Digitimes reports. OmniVision (OVTI), STMicroelectronics (STM), Texas Instruments (TXN), and NXP (NXPI) are also said to be ramping production of next-gen iPhone chips. It's added TSMC's 28nm supply constraints, exacerbated by Nvidia's (NVDA) significant needs, continue to be a problem. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 1:37 PM Samsung's acquisition of Wi-Fi chipmaker Nanoradio isn't a near-term issue for mobile Wi-Fi giant Broadcom (BRCM), says Nomura's Romit Shah. Though Nanoradio's chips boast low power consumption, they currently don't support other radio technologies such as Bluetooth and FM, unlike Broadcom's combo chips. In addition, Broadcom has a lead in supporting new technologies such as 802.11ac and Wi-Fi Direct. Samsung's Galaxy S III features a Broadcom combo chip. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 10:47 AM After visiting Silicon Valley chipmakers, Canaccord's Bobby Burleson believes the recent selloff in chip stocks is overdone. While admitting demand is soft for the PC and wireline telecom markets, total orders, buoyed by healthy smartphone/tablet demand, are said to be in-line with expectations. Burleson's top picks are AMD, BRCM, IDTI, and MRVL. 2 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 9:18 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will begin selling its flagship Galaxy S III to all four nationwide U.S. carriers this month, along with U.S. Cellular (USM), at prices that start at $199. The S III has received largely positive reviews, and its Euro launch has been met with strong early demand. Qualcomm (QCOM), Broadcom (BRCM), Skyworks (SWKS), and Maxim (MXIM) are among the chipmakers that will benefit from the U.S. launch. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, June 1, 2012, 5:47 PM Chipworks and iFixit perform teardowns of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) flagship Galaxy S III. Detected parts include an Intel (INTC) baseband processor, a Broadcom (BRCM) Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip and GPS receiver, a Silicon Image (SIMG) video transmitter; a Skyworks (SWKS) power amplifier, a Sony (SNE) image sensor, an Audience (ADNC) voice processor, and Maxim (MXIM) power management chips. The U.S. version will have Qualcomm's (QCOM) MSM8960 baseband/app processor. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 1, 2012, 9:11 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has acquired Nanoradio, a Swedish developer of Wi-Fi chips for mobile devices. The deal reflects Samsung's efforts to internally source its mobile components as much as possible, and is a likely negative for Broadcom (BRCM), which is currently a major supplier of Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips for the world's biggest phone vendor. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 5:44 PM More on Cisco: The company says it will announce products that support software-defined networking (SDN) at its June 10-14 CiscoLive conference. Cisco recently funded an in-house startup called Insieme that will develop SDN gear, which threatens to cannibalize sales of Cisco's proprietary, high-margin switches, but is also proving popular with Internet companies. The fact SDN switches tend to rely on off-the-shelf switching chips could benefit BRCM and MRVL. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 10:37 AM Broadcom (BRCM +3.1%) follows its chip industry peers higher (SOXX +2.8%) after Nomura's Michael Lean adds the company to his firm's Conviction Buy list. Lean argues Broadcom's core business continue to perform well, and considers the company's valuation (13x estimated 2013 EPS) to be compelling. Maxim Integrated (MXIM +0.9%) is being removed from the list to make room. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, May 21, 2012, 12:43 PM Taiwan's MediaTek, long a top baseband chip supplier to Chinese and white-label OEMs, has landed 2G baseband chip orders from Nokia (NOK), Digitimes reports. This could be a negative from Broadcom (BRCM +2.5%) and STMicroelectronics (STM +3.5%), who have grown their baseband chip sales to Nokia as former top supplier Texas Instruments gradually exits the market. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, May 14, 2012, 5:07 PM More on David Tepper: The fund manager made big bets on tech in Q1. Tepper more than tripled his position in Apple (AAPL) to 685K shares, and boosted his Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL) positions by 500K and 1.1M shares, respectively. He also established new positions in GOOG, BRCM, FIO, EMC, NTAP, NUAN, MRVL, and SNDK. (13-F) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 10:15 AM TSMC (TSM), trying to cope with limited manufacturing capacity for its cutting-edge 28nm process, has reportedly given priority for 28nm capacity to Nvidia (NVDA), which is using TSMC's process to make its just-launched Kepler graphics processors. It's added TSMC has already done the same for Qualcomm (QCOM), which blamed its soft June quarter chip guidance on TSMC's 28nm issues. Will other 28nm customers such as AMD, BRCM, and XLNX lose out? 3 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 4:11 PM Broadcom (BRCM): Q1 EPS of $0.65 beats by $0.11. Revenue of $1.827B (flat Y/Y) beats by $27M. Expects Q2 revenue of $1.9B-$2B vs. $1.97B consensus. Gross margin expected to be roughly flat Q/Q in spite of revenue increase. Shares -0.8% AH. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 12:10 AM Notable earnings after Tuesday's close: ACAS, AUY, BMR, BRCM, CAVM, CBS, CHK, CHSI, CVI, DDR, DEI, DVA, FISV, FLEX, GGP, GNW, MMI, OKE, OKS, OPEN, RGC, TE, TRIP, UNM, XCO Comment! [Earnings]
