- Friday, March 15, 1:38 PM A Chinese site has already torn down a local version of Samsung's Galaxy S IV. Discovered parts include a Qualcomm (QCOM) 3G baseband chip, an Intel (INTC) baseband chip and RF transceiver, TriQuint (TQNT) and Skyworks (SWKS) power amplifiers, Synaptics (SYNA) and Atmel (ATML) controllers, and a Broadcom (BRCM) GPS receiver. A Qualcomm baseband/app processor is expected in the U.S. version. RBC thinks thinks 70M S IV units could be sold this year, and sees Broadcom (NFC chip and a combo chip with high-speed Wi-Fi to go with the GPS chip) and Maxim (MXIM - power management and infrared chips) benefiting. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 7:36 PM Live from New York, it's the Samsung (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S IV. Mobile chief JK Shin has unveiled Samsung's new flagship device, which happens to look a lot like its predecessor. The S IV, said to support every 4G LTE band, will go on sale in late April (U.S. availability might take longer). The expected 5" 1080p display and 13MP camera are there, the next-gen 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard is supported (could be a positive for BRCM), and infrared, temperature, and humidity sensors are thrown in. A variety of camera tricks/gimmicks are provided, including the ability to simultaneously record video from both cameras. (live blog) (previous) 33 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 13, 12:39 PM The Forensic Accounting ETF (FLAG) rolls out new names given "A" and "F" ratings after a check of the books. Those getting top scores are LMT, ANF, and BRCM, while those failing are HD, F, COL, and TRIP. "Home Depot's revenue increase of 6% doesn't justify the stock's 23+ P/E ratio ... Ford has high and increasing cost of goods sold putting pressure on margins." 5 Comments
- Monday, March 11, 7:02 PM A new Broadcom (BRCM) digital cable adapter SoC makes it easier for cable video to be delivered to "Boxee boxes, smart TVs and other types of IP-connected video devices," Light Reading observes. The BCM7576's integration of an IP mini server allows it to decrypt content so that it can be shuffled around home networks, and onto retail devices. The chip can also handle up to four video feeds using a single-tuner - current adapters often require multiple tuners. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, March 11, 4:19 PM EZchip (EZCH +2.6%) had a roller-coaster ride after Kerrisdale Capital issued a report voicing concerns about Broadcom's (BRCM) entry into the carrier network processor market, arguing the company's ability to offer an end-to-end solution for line cards gives it an edge. Kerrisdale also warns of competition from Marvell's (MRVL) Xelerated unit, and argues EZchip's NPS processor will be at a manufacturing disadvantage relative to private Netronome. Shares rebounded after Feltl defended EZchip, asserting Broadcom's chips are handicapped by a lack of an integrated traffic manager, and noting Cisco and ZTE will use EZchip's NP-5 processor. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 6, 9:40 AM More on Apple: Berenberg's Adnaan Ahmad has downgraded shares to Sell from Buy, while also cutting his rating on Samsung (SSNLF.PK). With smartphone growth now fueled by emerging markets, "Apple and Samsung margins are peaking and growth is going to be driven by the margin-dilutive mid-to-low-end segment," he argues. Also, Citi has cut its PT to $480, citing weaker iPhone 5 and regular iPad demand. Citi, which cut Apple to Neutral in December, now expects March and June quarter iPhone sales of 34M and 25M, below a consensus of 37M and 32M. AAPL -0.2%. 23 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 6, 9:13 AM Foxconn has begun production of an iPhone 5S (AAPL) that looks much like the iPhone 5, claims Japanese blog MacOtakara, which has a mixed track record (I, II) with iScoops. MacOtakara also reports NTT DoCoMo (DCM) has slashed Android phone orders for the fall, which is fueling speculation an iPhone deal is on the way. Jefferies' Peter Misek argued last month preparation for March iPhone 5S production could be responsible for new iPhone order cuts. Possible/likely suppliers: CRUS, OVTI, SWKS, TQNT, AVGO, QCOM, BRCM, NTE, MFLX, LPL. (yesterday) 29 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, March 1, 10:40 AM Apple (AAPL -1.8%) and its suppliers slump after iPhone/iPad image sensor provider OmniVision (OVTI -10.9%) issues light guidance to go with its FQ3 beat. CRUS -4.2%. SWKS -1.9%. TQNT -1.7%. AVGO -2%. RFMD -3.2%. BRCM -1.6%. On its FQ3 call, OmniVision would only attribute the guidance to "a seasonal trend of business," while adding smartphone market share trends are "highly, highly volatile right now." Like virtually all other Apple suppliers, OmniVision never mentions Apple by name. 21 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, February 22, 6:25 PM Though production and yields have risen, TSMC (TSM +1.1%) is still fully using up its 28nm chip manufacturing capacity thanks to strong demand from mobile clients, Digitimes reports. The report comes shortly after rival UMC warned of a Q1 operating loss due to a "slower than expected" 28nm ramp, and might bode well for TSMC equipment suppliers KLAC and LRCX - TSMC set a relatively light capex budget for 2013. Mobile chipmakers using TSMC's cutting-edge processes include Qualcomm, Broadcom, Nvidia, and MediaTek. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 22, 10:36 AM Piper launches coverage of Broadcom (BRCM +1.6%) with an Overweight and $50 PT, leading shares to outperform a bit. The chipmaker, which has more or less been range-bound since last spring, sold off on Wednesday on concerns about iPhone demand. Samsung's Galaxy S IV, which will reportedly sport a Broadcom combo chip (like the S III), is expected to be announced next month. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 20, 2:55 PM H-P (HPQ -1%), rather than Apple (AAPL -1.9%), might be to blame for Foxconn's hiring freeze, thinks UBS' Steve Milunovich. Milunovich, among the first to report of a major drop in iPhone build rates for the March quarter (a report vindicated by Apple's FQ2 guidance) says his sources indicate nothing has changed. Meanwhile, Jefferies' Peter Misek (previous) claims FQ2 iPhone build orders have fallen to just 20M-25M, but believes 5S builds will start in March. CRUS -5.1%. SWKS -2.3%. TQNT -2.6%. BRCM -1.6%. OVTI -3.1%. Update: H-P states its PC ops don't rely on the Shenzhen, China facility that has seen a hiring freeze. 11 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 12, 7:02 PM Broadcom's (BRCM +1.3%) 4G baseband modem could allow it to displace Qualcomm (QCOM -1.9%) as Apple's baseband supplier, thinks RBC's Doug Freedman. He argues the relatively small/low-power chip's support for the LTE-Advanced standard and China Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G network work in its favor, and believes Apple is currently sampling the product. Two caveats: Apple generally isn't quick to change suppliers, and (as is its custom) Qualcomm will probably show off new baseband parts this month at the Mobile World Congress. (Broadcom PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 12, 9:18 AM Qualcomm (QCOM) -1.4% thanks to a downgrade to Neutral from JPMorgan, which foresees "rapidly slowing smartphone adoption" in 2014. The firm also sees 3G device ASPs falling this year - Qualcomm's device royalties are based on a % of OEM selling prices. The downgrade follows solid post-earnings gains. Separately, Broadcom (BRCM) says its first 4G baseband chip will be smaller than rival chips, but (like Intel's) won't ship in volume until 2014 - Qualcomm dominates this market, though some competition exists. (2013 smartphone estimates) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, February 6, 1:03 PM Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) anticipated Galaxy S IV will be announced on March 15, SamMobile reports - the site has been an accurate source of Samsung rumors in the past. The device will reportedly go on sale in Europe and Asia in April, and hit North America in May or June. Rumored specs include a 5" 1080p OLED display, Exynos 5 Octa processor (for some models, at least), and 13MP camera. Possible/likely suppliers (I, II) include BRCM, QCOM, PANL, SWKS, ADNC, and MXIM. 42 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 5, 4:01 PM A Broadcom (BRCM +0.5%) Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip (perhaps a 5G Wi-Fi part) has been designed into Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S IV, according to Evercore's checks. The firm also sees evidence of "a greater mix" of Qualcomm (QCOM +2%) Snapdragon processors being used for the S IV than the S III, which relies on both a Snapdragon and a Samsung Exynos processor (depending on the model). Broadcom remains the combo chip market's undisputed leader, but recent acquisitions by Samsung could lower its dependence on the chipmaker. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 1, 1:34 PM Telecom chipmakers Cavium (CAVM +7.5%) and PMC-Sierra (PMCS +13.7%) soar after delivering Q4 beats (I, II), and contribute to a decent rally in chip stocks (SOXX +1.9%). Cavium guided on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of $68.5M-$70.5M and EPS of $0.17-$0.19 vs. a consensus of $69.1M and $0.17. PMC guided on its call for Q1 revenue of $123M-$132M, largely above a $124.7M consensus. The numbers come amidst growing optimism (I, II) about 2013 telecom capex. Peers Broadcom (BRCM +2%), Marvell (MRVL +3.1%), and LSI (LSI +4.7%) are all doing well. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
