- Wednesday, January 30, 6:44 PM Some mobile chipmakers are ticking higher following strong calendar Q4 reports from Qualcomm and Skyworks. CRUS +0.9% AH. AVGO +1.3%. RFMD +1.2%. BRCM, TQNT, INVN, and OVTI could also end up moving. Meanwhile, strong reports from Citrix, Fortinet, and ServiceNow have produced modest gains in some enterprise IT names. RHT +1.1% AH. VMW +0.8%. FFIV +0.6%. INFA +1%. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 29, 5:38 PM Broadcom Corporation (BRCM) declares $0.11/share quarterly dividend, 10% increase from prior dividend of $0.10. Forward yield 1.31%. For shareholders of record Feb. 15. Payable Mar. 04. Ex-div date Feb. 13. Shares -1.2% AH. (PR) Comment! [Dividends, On the Move]

- Wednesday, January 23, 5:08 PM NASDAQ 100 futures -0.5% AH after Apple trades lower on mixed FQ1 numbers and light FQ2 revenue guidance. As one would expect, Apple chip suppliers are also lower. CRUS -6.5% AH. QCOM -1.1%. BRCM -1.7%. SWKS -5.1%. AVGO -1.3%. TQNT -1.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 1:25 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has passed Apple to become the world's top chip buyer, per Gartner: the firm estimates Samsung accounted for 8% of global chip purchases last year thanks to a 28.9% increase in consumption to $23.9B. Apple bought $21.4B worth of chips (7.2% share), and H-P $14B (4.7%). Samsung is trying to source more of those chips internally, as evidenced by last year's acquisitions (I, II). Some major Samsung mobile chip suppliers: SWKS, RFMD, MXIM, BRCM, QCOM. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, January 18, 5:43 PM Though mass adoption isn't expected until 2015, Broadcom (BRCM) is betting big on 4K (UltraHD) video, co-founder/CTO Henry Samueli drives home in a VentureBeat interview. Among the chipmaker's CES launches was a decoder chip for home gateways that cuts the bitrate needed to deliver 4K video in half. Broadcom will also benefit from 4K adoption to the extent it boosts demand for 802.11ac (5G) Wi-Fi hardware - the company is an early leader in the 5G Wi-Fi space. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 15, 12:18 PM Another day, another Apple supplier selloff due to iPhone sales worries. CRUS -2.8%. NTE -3.2%. BRCM -1.6%. SWKS -2.5%. AVGO -1.5%. LPL -3.5% MU -1.9%. Cirrus Logic now trades at just 7.3x FY14 (ends March '14) EPS, putting it squarely in value territory provided estimates don't get cut too much - Sterne Agee thinks iPhone order cuts are already baked into March quarter Cirrus estimates. Skyworks is at 8.4x FY14E (ends Sep. '14) EPS. (yesterday) (Multi-Fineline warning) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 14, 11:19 AM On cue, Apple's (AAPL -2.8%) sell-side fans are defending it following reports of iPhone component order cuts due to weaker-than-expected demand. UBS, one of the first to report of production cuts, says it detects no change to iPhone orders since December, though it worries shares could be pressured near-term. Wells Fargo notes Apple's 65M-unit iPhone 5 display order (per The Nikkei) was "an unrealistic number to begin with." JPMorgan says it only forecast 25M calendar Q1 iPhone 5 builds regardless. Notable Calls: "This sure feels like capitulation, doesn't it?" 41 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, January 14, 9:12 AM Unsurprisingly, iPhone chip suppliers are joining Apple in getting hit by the WSJ and Nikkei's order cut reports. CRUS -5%. QCOM -1.4%. BRCM -1.3%. SWKS -3.7%. TQNT -1.2%. AVGO -1.9%. Can Samsung (SSNLF.PK - +1.2% in Seoul), which just announced 100M cumulative Galaxy S phone sales, pick up the apparent slack for some of these companies? 17 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Sunday, January 13, 9:38 PM Apple (AAPL) has cut iPhone 5 component orders for calendar Q1 due to weaker-than-expected demand, sources tell the WSJ; display orders are said to be cut by ~50%. The Nikkei also claims display orders have been halved, albeit from an elevated level of 65M. The articles back up analyst reports of iPhone production and component order cuts, and raise the question of whether Apple needs a cheaper iPhone and/or one with a larger display to bolster its international share. Suppliers on watch: LPL, CRUS, OVTI, QCOM, BRCM, SWKS, TQNT, AVGO. 94 Comments [Tech, Top Stories]
- Friday, January 11, 2:17 PM A day after TSMC (TSM -0.1%) reported healthy December sales, occasionally-accurate Digitimes writes "industry watchers" expect TSMC to report a 7%-11% Q/Q sales drop for seasonally weak Q1, a range largely below estimates. Top clients such as QCOM, BRCM, TXN, and NXPI have reportedly "started to slow down orders" due to inventory adjustments," and wafer starts for MediaTek and Spreadtrum (SPRD) are seen falling 10%-20%. It's worth noting the article follows multiple reports of iPhone chip order cuts - several TSMC clients are iPhone suppliers. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 8, 6:54 PM Broadcom's (BRCM) CES product launches include: 1) An IPTV set-top box reference platform that includes support for the high-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. 2) A video decoder chip supporting the UltraHD (4K) video standard, which is finding its way into high-end TVs. 3) A 1 Gbps home networking chip based on the MoCA 2.0 standard (new competition for ENTR). 4) A cable modem/gateway SoC that supports 1 Gbps downlink speeds. Broadcom also notes its set-top SoCs have been designed into boxes from Samsung and Comcast. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, January 7, 4:59 PM More on Intel: As rumors of an Intel TV service run amok, the company is announcing a partnership with Comcast to enable the viewing of live Xfinity TV content on Intel-based devices without a set-top box (possibly a negative for CSCO, ARRS, BRCM and STM), but with the help of an Intel Puma cable modem/gateway. Intel is also mandating ultrabooks based on its next-gen Haswell CPUs sport touchscreens and support its wireless display tech. That could be a positive for touchscreen controller vendors such as ATML, CY, and SYNA. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, January 4, 6:18 PM A stat-filled Nomura infographic offers plenty of market share data on tablet chip suppliers. Some details: Broadcom is estimated to supply 70%-75% of the tablet market's Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips, 35% of its GPS chips, and 60% of its touchscreen controllers; Qualcomm is estimated to provide 30%-35% of its power management ICs, 70% of its baseband chips, and 55% of its GPS chips; and Skyworks is believed to provide 30%-35% of its RF/front-end chips. Also, OmniVision (50%-55% image sensor share) is estimated to derive 19% of its sales from the tablet market. (smartphones) 3 Comments [Tech]
