- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 10:36 AM Pac Crest's Brent Bracelin has upgraded Cisco (CSCO +6.4%) to Buy in response to its solid FQ1 results and FQ2 guidance. Cisco "could grow in 2013 and have stable to improving gross margin for the first time in two years," thinks Bracelin. Piper likes Cisco's sales execution and cost controls, and FBN notes shares trade at 5x EPS exc. cash. Europe is still a concern for many. FFIV +4%. JDSU +2.7%. XLNX +2.8%. BRCM +1.8%. CAVM +6.9%. FTNT +3.3%. ARUN +4.6%. (CC comments: I, II) (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, November 9, 2012, 4:42 PM It pays for chip companies to have good mobile exposure these days. TSMC (TSM +1.4%), the top foundry for Qualcomm, OmniVision, Broadcom, and other mobile chip names, reported its October sales rose 15% M/M and 32% Y/Y to $1.7B, boosted by growing 28nm chip production. Rival UMC, by comparison, only saw 12% Y/Y growth. Credit Suisse now thinks TSMC should be able to hit the high end of its Q4 revenue guidance range thanks to smartphone-related orders. Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 1:48 PM If there was any lingering doubt Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy S line has an unrivaled cachet in the Android universe, Strategy Analytics' Q3 data should remove it. The firm estimates 18M S III units were shipped, giving the device a 10.7% share of total smartphone shipments. It also estimates Apple (AAPL), which sold 26.9M iPhones overall, is believed to have shipped 16.2M iPhone 4S units and 6M iPhone 5 units. Samsung's total Q3 smartphone shipments were previously pegged at 56.9M. Key Galaxy S III suppliers: MXIM, SWKS, ADNC, BRCM. 37 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, November 7, 2012, 12:35 PM Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) declares $0.1/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. For shareholders of record Nov. 23. Payable Dec. 10. Ex-div Nov. 20. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 11:36 AM iFixit's teardown of the iPad Mini (AAPL) has uncovered a couple of Broadcom (BRCM +0.9%) touchscreen controller chips to go with the expected Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip. Also found are a couple of Fairchild (FCS +4.3%) analog chips and (interestingly, given Apple's deteriorating supplier relationship with the company) a Samsung (SSNLF.PK) LCD driver IC. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 5:56 PM Microsoft's Surface RT tablet uses a Marvell (MRVL) Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip, according to iFixit's teardown. That, notes Susquehanna, is Marvell's highest-profile combo chip win to date - the chipmaker has struggled to compete in this space against market leader Broadcom. Atmel (ATML) and Cypress (CY) touchscreen controllers were also found inside Surface RT, which has received mixed reviews. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 4:21 PM More on Cirrus Logic's FQ2: Though strong guidance was expected thanks to iPhone 5 and iPad Mini wins, its magnitude is still impressive. The numbers could indicate growing dollar content and/or spell good things for other Apple suppliers. FQ2 gross margin was 52%, down 200 bps Q/Q and at the low end of Cirrus' guidance range. FQ3 gross margin of 50%-52% expected. Audio product sales (92% of revenue) +113% Y/Y, energy products -11%. CC at 5PM ET (webcast). Shares halted. (PR) (shareholder letter - PDF) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Tuesday, October 30, 2012, 4:17 PM ARM (ARMH) has launched its Cortex-A50 CPU core line: the first two designs are the A57, which ARM claims delivers 3x the performance of the processors found in today's high-end phones, and the smaller A53, which supposedly can match the performance of said processors while consuming 1/4 as much power. Initial licensees include AMD (previous), Broadcom, Samsung, and STMicroelectronics. Absent are Qualcomm and Apple, who use custom ARM cores. The first A50-based chips are due in 2014. 2 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, October 25, 2012, 2:57 PM Investors seem nervous ahead of Apple's (AAPL -1%) FQ4 report. Not only is Apple trading lower, so are component suppliers Cirrus Logic (CRUS -4%), OmniVision (OVTI -2.2%), Broadcom (BRCM -2%), and SanDisk (SNDK -1.7%). Expectations definitely aren't where they were on Sep. 21, the day the iPhone 5 launched and Apple made its all-time high. (earlier) 20 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 2:53 PM While Facebook leads an Internet stock rally, chip stocks have sold off over the course of the day (SOXX -1.3%). Broadcom (BRCM -2.9%) and Altera's (ALTR -8%) guidance (I, II) is taking a toll, and the Street might also be concerned about the implications of EMC and Juniper's guidance. During its earnings call, Broadcom said it expected its networking/wireline infrastructure chip sales to be weak in Q4, due to both soft enterprise and service provider spending. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 4:13 PM Broadcom (BRCM): Q3 EPS of $0.79 beats by $0.03. Revenue of $2.13B (+8.7% Y/Y) beats by $40M. Expects Q4 revenue of $1.95B-$2.1B, below $2.11B consensus. Shares +1.5% AH. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech, Earnings]

- Monday, October 22, 2012, 5:35 PM Notable earnings after Tuesday’s close: ACE, AFL, ALTR, AMGN, BCR, BNNY, BRCM, BWLD, CBI, CHRW, FB, FBC, FBHS, FTI, GILD, HTS, ILMN, INVN, IRBT, JNPR, NBR, NFLX, NFX, NSC, PLCM, PNRA, QCOR, RFMD, STM, TPX, TSS, UIS, VMW, WYNN Comment! [Earnings]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 5:08 PM More on Texas Instruments' Q3: Wireless sales, hurt by declining Amazon and Nokia orders, -44% Y/Y - TI is planning to exit this space. Embedded Processing -4% (hurt by telecom), analog (boosted by National Semi deal) +18%. Other businesses (calculators, etc.) -11%. Analog and Other made up most of operating profit. Orders +6% Y/Y but -5% Q/Q. EPS boosted by $600M in stock buybacks and $60M earthquake insurance payment. CC at 5:30PM ET (webcast). TXN nearly unchanged in spite of guidance, could bode well for peers who still have to report. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 1:34 PM Wedbush's Betsy Van Hees slashes estimates on Broadcom (BRCM -0.4%) ahead of tomorrow's Q3 report, and predicts its Q4 guidance will fall short of consensus. While admitting Broadcom's strong exposure to Apple and Samsung, Van Hees expects macro issues, inventory draw-downs, and limited visibility to hurt guidance. Several chip industry companies have already provided weak earnings figures (I, II, III) this month. Broadcom, like other chip stocks, has sold off a bit in recent weeks. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 11:16 AM Manufacturing issues or not, Apple (AAPL +0.7%) has raised calendar Q4 iPhone 5 build orders to 60M-65M units from a prior 55M-60M, thinks Jefferies' Peter Misek - if true, that's a positive for component suppliers such as CRUS, OVTI, QCOM, BRCM, SWKS, and TQNT. Misek, who adds iPhone 5 lead time remain at 3-4 weeks in the 31 countries where it's available, continues to expect 55M iPhones will be shipped this quarter. 3 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
