- Monday, July 23, 2012, 5:24 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) boasts it has already shipped 10M Galaxy S III phones - GigaOm estimates the figure translates into 190K shipments/day since the flagship device launched, or a run rate of 17.1M/quarter. Analysts estimate Samsung sold 50M smartphones overall in Q2, as it increasingly towers over its Android rivals. BRCM, SWKS, SIMG, and MXIM are among the chipmakers that benefit from Galaxy S III sales. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 11:06 AM Only 20M-25M iPhones will be produced in the September quarter, sources tell Digitimes. The next-gen iPhone will account for a large chunk of these shipments. The report comes as Apple (AAPL +0.7%) trades higher in spite of Verizon's soft iPhone sales figure - a Q2 U.S. slowdown seems to be priced in. iPhone component suppliers are also moving higher, thanks to Qualcomm and Skyworks' reports. Avian recently estimated Q2 iPhone builds may have fallen to ~20M. 10 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 12:55 PM Broadcom (BRCM -3.6%) is off on news of Samsung's purchase of most of rival CSR's (CSRE +29.9%) mobile chip business, but has bounced from its lows. FBR defends Broadcom by noting its phone connectivity business only makes up 6%-10% of sales, and that CSR's chips will likely be aimed at low-end phones. Deutsche argues there isn't much near-term risk to sales, and that Broadcom's Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips have performance and cost advantages over CSR's discrete solutions. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 9:21 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is acquiring the mobile phone connectivity and location chip ops of U.K's CSR (CSRE +34.1%) for £200M ($319M). The acquisition covers Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS chips, and is arguably a threat to Samsung supplier Broadcom (BRCM), which has long competed with CSR in these areas. It also provides Samsung with 21 patents that could be useful in its disputes with Apple. The deal comes 6 weeks after Samsung bought Wi-Fi chipmaker Nanoradio. BRCM -1.6%. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 5:56 PM Many analysts have suggested going long on Apple's supply chain over the years. Barclays, however, thinks now is a good time to bet on Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) supply chain, given the Korean conglomerate's surging smartphone production, and an expected lull in iPhone builds ahead of a fall refresh. BRCM, SWKS, RFMD, and MXIM are mentioned as firms with healthy Samsung exposure, though the first two are also heavily exposed to Apple. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 1:56 PM Avian's Blaine Carroll cuts his Q2 estimates for RF component vendors Skyworks (SWKS +1.6%) and TriQuint (TQNT +1.9%) out of a belief iPhone (AAPL) builds are weak. Carroll thinks only ~20M iPhones were built in the June quarter, down from a prior estimate of 25M and below iPhone sales forecasts of 28M-30M, due to Europe's problems and next-gen iPhone anticipation. Other suppliers with heavy iPhone exposure: CRUS, AVGO, BRCM, QCOM. (also) 9 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 12:42 PM Chip stocks underperform (SOXX -2.1%) after Nomura's Romit Shah says his firm "cannot make a fundamental argument for being long any semiconductor stocks in today’s environment." On a relative basis, Shah recommends buying Apple component suppliers. Some chipmakers with heavy Apple explosure: CRUS, OVTI, SWKS, TQNT, BRCM. Deutsche made the opposite call on chip stocks yesterday. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 12:06 PM Deutsche's Ross Seymore is the latest analyst to slash estimates for Intel (INTC) ahead of Tuesday's Q2 report. Seymore, citing macro worries, is also cutting estimates for Texas Instruments (TXN) and Broadcom (BRCM). But the cuts are fairly small in scope, and he thinks chip stocks, which have underperformed the S&P this year, are due for a rally. (previous) (AMD warning) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, July 6, 2012, 1:27 PM Texas Instruments (TXN) is working on optimizing its network processors for the budding OpenFlow standard. OpenFlow, based on the concept of software-defined networking (SDN), threatens sales of proprietary Ethernet switches from Cisco (CSCO) and others through its reliance on off-the-shelf chips and open standards. TI's embrace of OpenFlow could help it better compete against market leaders Broadcom (BRCM) and Marvell (MRVL). Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 4:18 PM Broadcom (BRCM) and Emulex (ELX) announce a partial settlement of their contentious patent dispute. Emulex will receive a license to use 3 Broadcom patents in its Fibre Channel adapter cards and chips in exchange for a $58M license fee, and grants Broadcom "certain rights" protecting the company from Emulex infringement claims. The license covers 2 patents that led to an injunction on the sale of certain Emulex products Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, July 3, 2012, 10:42 AM MIPS (MIPS -2.1%) trades lower after reaching a patent licensing deal with Broadcom (BRCM +0.6%). In exchange for $26.5M plus "other consideration," Broadcom obtains a non-exclusive license for the use of MIPS' IP in its products. In addition, Broadcom, which has long used MIPS' CPU cores in its set-top box processors, is taking out a multi-year extension for its license to use MIPS' cores. Activist fund Starboard Value has been pushing MIPS to better monetize its patents. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, June 28, 2012, 4:46 PM Research In Motion (RIMM) has resumed trading following its giant FQ1 miss and layoff announcement. Shares are down 15.9% AH. The company's market cap is now barely above $4B. Mobile component suppliers such as Skyworks (SWKS), Broadcom (BRCM), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Marvell (MRVL) are off slightly AH. 11 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 5:29 PM Cantor's Dale Pfau starts coverage on Qualcomm (QCOM) and Broadcom (BRCM) at Buy. Pfau thinks Qualcomm can add to its 45% share of the smartphone baseband chip market given the huge design win share of its Snapdragon processors, and is also positive on the continuing migration to 3G networks in emerging markets. Meanwhile, Broadcom's mobile business (baseband and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips) is expected to post a 25% CAGR. (QCOM conference) 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 9:11 AM Northland Securities launches coverage on the chip industry. AMD, MRVL, QLGC, BRCM, NVDA, EZCH, and ELX are started at Outperform. INTC, TXN, and PMCS are started at Market Perform. Comment! [Tech]
