- Thursday, May 16, 10:49 AM Plenty of Cisco rivals and suppliers are now rallying in response to the company's FQ3 beat, guidance, and order activity: JDSU +5.2%. RKUS +5.8%. CAVM +4.8%. PKT +2.9%. ADTN +2.6%. ALLT +1.9%. FN +2%. FNSR +2.4%. BRCM +1.3%. MRVL +1.6%. (previous) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 1, 10:18 AM A revenue miss and soft guidance lead Entropic (ENTR -14.9%) to plunge towards its 52-week low. On its earnings call, the set-top/home networking chipmaker guided for Q2 revenue of $70M-$73M and EPS of $0.00, below a consensus of $77.3M and $0.01; management blamed "seasonal softness" in carrier demand and "continued revenue pressure" for its set-top SoC ops as a cable provider works through its digital adapter inventory. Needham has cut shares to Hold. Entropic is seeing intensifying competition from Broadcom (BRCM), which on its Q1 call stated broadband chip sales rose 9% Y/Y, with set-top growth offsetting lower Chinese modem shipments. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, April 29, 12:59 PM As goes Apple, so goes Cirrus Logic (CRUS +7.1%). The audio codec chipmaker is taking off in sympathy with the customer than made up 85% of its March quarter revenue, one trading day after getting clocked due to downbeat remarks about FY14 sales. Likewise, iPhone/Galaxy S4 supplier Skyworks (SWKS +3.4%) is rallying following a post-earnings Friday decline caused by mixed guidance, and so is rival RF Micro (RFMD +3.2%). Broadcom (BRCM +2.5%), meanwhile, is adding to last week's strong post-earnings gains, fueled by a Q1 beat and solid guidance. The gains come even as another Apple supplier, Nam Tai, gets crushed due to weak guidance. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 24, 12:28 PM Are wireless chip stocks decoupling from Apple? Even with Apple off slightly as bleak June quarter guidance outweighs fresh capital returns, iPhone/iPad combo chip supplier Broadcom (BRCM +6.6%) is surging thanks to a Q1 beat and strong Q2 guidance, and is helping out some peers - QCOM +1.4%, SWKS +2.6%, INVN +1.8%, SNDK +1%. During its earnings call, Broadcom, which also provides combo chips for many Samsung phones, stated mobile chip sales only fell 1.6% Q/Q in seasonally weak Q1, and forecast sequential growth for the business (Apple-dependent Cirrus Logic sure isn't doing the same). Qualcomm reports after the close. 4 Comments [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]

Tuesday, April 23, 5:48 PM
After-hours top gainers, as of 5:15 p.m.: IRBT +14%. ENZN +7%. YUM +6%. BRCM +5%. AAPL +5%.
After-hours top losers: VOCS -30%. UIS -16%. DV -12%. AWAY -8%. PNRA -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Tuesday, April 23, 4:10 PM Broadcom (BRCM): Q1 EPS of $0.65 beats by $0.09. Revenue of $2.01B (+10% Y/Y) beats by $100M. Expects Q2 revenue of $2.1B (+/- 4%), favorable to a consensus of $2.05B. Shares +2.7% AH. CC at 4:45PM ET (webcast). (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 17, 12:26 PM Chip stocks have a rough day (SOXX -2.8%) following Cirrus Logic's warning, light guidance from Linear Technology (LLTC -4.6%) to go with a Q1 beat - Linear sees 1%-4% Q/Q revenue growth for calendar Q2, below a 4.7% consensus - and ho-hum Q1 results/Q2 guidance from Intel. Apple suppliers Broadcom (BRCM -4%), Avago (AVGO -5.5%), STMicroelectronics (STM -6.7%), NXP (NXPI -7%), RF Micro (RFMD -2.8%), and OmniVision (OVTI -3.3%) are among the casualties, but they're far from alone. ANAD -6.2%. STM -5.7%. FSL -5%. ADI -4.5%. TXN -4.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, March 18, 11:54 AM Samsung's Galaxy S IV uses a Broadcom (BRCM +0.9%) NFC chip rather than an NXP (NXPI -3.3%) part, NFC Times confirms in a column that seems to be pressuring NXP shares - some already suspected a Broadcom chip is being used. The site adds Broadcom's part works in tandem with an STMicroelectronics (STM +3.8%) memory chip to enable NFC payment apps from Visa and MasterCard. NXP supplies the NFC chip found in the Galaxy S III and is still the market's leading vendor, but Broadcom's design win rate has been picking up lately. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, March 1, 10:40 AM Apple (AAPL -1.8%) and its suppliers slump after iPhone/iPad image sensor provider OmniVision (OVTI -10.9%) issues light guidance to go with its FQ3 beat. CRUS -4.2%. SWKS -1.9%. TQNT -1.7%. AVGO -2%. RFMD -3.2%. BRCM -1.6%. On its FQ3 call, OmniVision would only attribute the guidance to "a seasonal trend of business," while adding smartphone market share trends are "highly, highly volatile right now." Like virtually all other Apple suppliers, OmniVision never mentions Apple by name. 21 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Wednesday, February 20, 2:55 PM H-P (HPQ -1%), rather than Apple (AAPL -1.9%), might be to blame for Foxconn's hiring freeze, thinks UBS' Steve Milunovich. Milunovich, among the first to report of a major drop in iPhone build rates for the March quarter (a report vindicated by Apple's FQ2 guidance) says his sources indicate nothing has changed. Meanwhile, Jefferies' Peter Misek (previous) claims FQ2 iPhone build orders have fallen to just 20M-25M, but believes 5S builds will start in March. CRUS -5.1%. SWKS -2.3%. TQNT -2.6%. BRCM -1.6%. OVTI -3.1%. Update: H-P states its PC ops don't rely on the Shenzhen, China facility that has seen a hiring freeze. 11 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, February 1, 1:34 PM Telecom chipmakers Cavium (CAVM +7.5%) and PMC-Sierra (PMCS +13.7%) soar after delivering Q4 beats (I, II), and contribute to a decent rally in chip stocks (SOXX +1.9%). Cavium guided on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of $68.5M-$70.5M and EPS of $0.17-$0.19 vs. a consensus of $69.1M and $0.17. PMC guided on its call for Q1 revenue of $123M-$132M, largely above a $124.7M consensus. The numbers come amidst growing optimism (I, II) about 2013 telecom capex. Peers Broadcom (BRCM +2%), Marvell (MRVL +3.1%), and LSI (LSI +4.7%) are all doing well. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 5:38 PM Broadcom Corporation (BRCM) declares $0.11/share quarterly dividend, 10% increase from prior dividend of $0.10. Forward yield 1.31%. For shareholders of record Feb. 15. Payable Mar. 04. Ex-div date Feb. 13. Shares -1.2% AH. (PR) Comment! [Dividends, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 23, 5:08 PM NASDAQ 100 futures -0.5% AH after Apple trades lower on mixed FQ1 numbers and light FQ2 revenue guidance. As one would expect, Apple chip suppliers are also lower. CRUS -6.5% AH. QCOM -1.1%. BRCM -1.7%. SWKS -5.1%. AVGO -1.3%. TQNT -1.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 15, 12:18 PM Another day, another Apple supplier selloff due to iPhone sales worries. CRUS -2.8%. NTE -3.2%. BRCM -1.6%. SWKS -2.5%. AVGO -1.5%. LPL -3.5% MU -1.9%. Cirrus Logic now trades at just 7.3x FY14 (ends March '14) EPS, putting it squarely in value territory provided estimates don't get cut too much - Sterne Agee thinks iPhone order cuts are already baked into March quarter Cirrus estimates. Skyworks is at 8.4x FY14E (ends Sep. '14) EPS. (yesterday) (Multi-Fineline warning) 4 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, January 14, 9:12 AM Unsurprisingly, iPhone chip suppliers are joining Apple in getting hit by the WSJ and Nikkei's order cut reports. CRUS -5%. QCOM -1.4%. BRCM -1.3%. SWKS -3.7%. TQNT -1.2%. AVGO -1.9%. Can Samsung (SSNLF.PK - +1.2% in Seoul), which just announced 100M cumulative Galaxy S phone sales, pick up the apparent slack for some of these companies? 17 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, January 4, 9:50 AM Silicon Image (SIMG -8.7%) opens down sharply after warning it expects Q4 revenue of $59M-$60M, below prior guidance of $64M-$67M and a consensus of $65.7M. The chipmaker blames "the rescheduling of certain orders by a large customer," and says it expects Q1 product sales to be up Q/Q. Is that "large customer" Samsung? SIMG supplies MHL video transmitter chips for the Galaxy S III and other Samsung smartphones. Other key Samsung chip suppliers include MXIM, SWKS, BRCM, and ADNC. Comment! Whitehawk: You should be clear on what defines "long-term." Investment articles written by a day trader...! (Yeah, I'm giving you a hard time.) -
Ashraf Eassa: I am not a day trader by nature, but I do make opportunistic trades now and again!
