- Tuesday, May 7, 4:57 PM DaVita (DVA) enters into a standstill agreement with Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) limiting ownership to 25% of DVA's outstanding stock, putting the kabosh on rumors of a takeout. Speculation had been stoked late last year that the 'Oracle of Omaha' might be looking to buy the dialysis operator, after Berkshire disclosed that it had accumulated nearly 13% of DVA's outstanding stock. 2 Comments [Healthcare, M&A]
- Sunday, March 24, 6:00 AM H.J. Heinz (HNZ) has sold $3.1B of junk-rated bonds to help pay for its LBO by Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) and 3G Capital. The amount was well above the $2.1B initially planned and yielded record-low interest rates for speculative-grade debt. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Friday, February 15, 3:10 AM The SEC reportedly is investigating a surge in trading of Heinz (HNZ) call options on Tuesday, before news the company was being bought by Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) and 3G Capital for $28B, or $72.50 a share. A Heinz $65 call option expiring on June 22 apparently had a volume of 2,593 contracts on Wednesday vs. an average over the prior 20 days of 13. 3G's acquisition of Burger King in 2010 came under similar scrutiny. 7 Comments [M&A, Top Stories, Consumer, Financials]
- Thursday, February 14, 8:41 AM Heinz (HNZ) is the only food company that can boast 30+ quarters of organic food growth, director Nelson Peltz tells CNBC, commenting on the acquisition. "I think there are many deals coming," Peltz says noting the negligible cost of money, which he notes explains his stake in Lazard (LAZ). "The M&A market is just getting rolling." 4 Comments [M&A]
- Thursday, February 14, 8:18 AM "We've bought a number of companies that have traded higher temporarily higher," Buffett tells CNBC after noting Heinz (HNZ) is currently trading at $72.90, a premium to the $72.50 price Berkshire (BRK.A) and 3G set with HNZ. "They're not going to get another penny out of me," the Oracle promises. 4 Comments [M&A, On the Move, Top Stories]
- Thursday, February 14, 7:52 AM Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) to buy H. J. Heinz Company (HNZ) for $72.50/share, or $28B. Shares +20.2% premarket to $72.70. Update: Confirmed. 27 Comments [Breaking News, M&A, Consumer, On the Move, Top Stories]
- Thursday, January 31, 1:08 PM Warren Buffett continues his bet on print media with Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) picking up for undisclosed terms the Greensboro News & Record from Landmark Media Enterprises. The community paper has daily circulation of 58K, 86K on Sunday. Comment! [Financials, M&A]
- Monday, January 28, 11:40 AM Warren Buffett made a late-2012 play for NYSE Euronext (NYX), according to sources who say "Company A" in an ICE filing (S-4) about a competing bid was Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B). Buffett reportedly bid less than ICE and conditioned the buy on the sale of NYSE's European derivatives business at a certain price. 1 Comment [Financials, M&A]
- Thursday, January 3, 5:22 AM Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) unit MidAmerican Energy is paying $2-2.5B for two solar projects that it's buying in California from SunPower (SPWR), which is also receiving a three-year contract to build them, and a multi-year deal to operate and maintain them. SunPower closed +9.1% yesterday following news of the deal. The acquisition is Warren Buffett's third major solar PV deal in a year. 1 Comment [M&A]
- Wednesday, January 2, 8:37 AM Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) subsidiary MidAmerican Energy agrees to acquire the 579 MW Antelope Valley Solar Projects, two solar power plants in Kern and Los Angeles counties in California, from SunPower (SPWR) for an undisclosed sum. The two combined projects would form the world's largest permitted solar photovoltaic power development. 2 Comments [Energy, M&A]
- Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 3:12 PM Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B -0.5%) says it's recently completed, ahead of schedule, the sale of two short-line railroads it acquired as part of its purchase of Burlington Northern Santa Fe. BRK.A discovered owning the railroads this fall, and sold them to satisfy regulators who might have reviewed its acquisition of the BNSF railroad if it had reported owning them. 6 Comments [M&A]

Berkshire Hathaway's (BRK.A) accumulation of a 13%, $1.45B stake in DaVita HealthCare (DVA) over the past year has stoked speculation that Berkshire will offer to buy the whole of the dialysis-center operator. Berkshire followed a similar path with railroad Burlington Northern Santa Fe and insurer Geico, which it bought after building up stakes.
Comment! [Healthcare, M&A] - Tuesday, October 23, 2012, 7:01 AM Berkshire Hathaway's (BRK.B) National Indemnity Unit gets the regulatory green light to close its purchase of Israel's Clal Insurance U.S. operations. The $221M deal was originally announced in August. Comment! [Financials, M&A]
- Monday, October 1, 2012, 9:35 AM IBM is thinking of making a bid for ResCap's mortgage-servicing assets in partnership with Ocwen Financial (OCN) on Oct. 23, the NY Post reports. That could put Big Blue in competition with Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B), believed to be partnering with a smaller firm. Some think Warren Buffett is only involved to get another bidder, Fortress Investment (FIG), to raise its offer, thereby allowing Berkshire to obtain more for its ResCap debt holdings. (previous) 4 Comments [Tech, M&A, Financials]
- Monday, October 1, 2012, 9:28 AM Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) raises its stake in DaVita (DVA) to about 10.8% of the dialysis clinic operator. The House of Buffett bought another 282K shares last week, bringing total holdings to about 10.2 shares. DaVita closed at a 52-week high of $103.61 on Friday, up 22% since the February disclosure of a Berkshire position. Comment! [Healthcare, Financials, M&A]
- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 12:16 PM Nationstar Mortgage (NSM -9.6%) plummets as Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) emerges as the front-runner in the battle to buy not just ResCap's mortgage portfolio, but its entire operation, reports the NYPost. Nationstar - the mortgage arm of hedge fund giant Wesley Eden - had originally hoped to get all and then at least part of the package. 2 Comments [Financials, M&A, On the Move]
