Canadian Oil Sands: Gates and Buffett Visit [view article]
John Gordon's point is correct. I wonder why these article never mention the startling and immense environmental degradation that comes with oilsands crude production. Currently Ghawar in SA is pumped with about 6 million barrels of water to produce 4-5 million barrels of oil. That is NOTHING next to Oilsand production, which needs 2-5 barrels of water to produce one barrel of oil, and ALSO needs one barrel of energy to produce 2-4 barrels of oil. The waste water is worthless, unreclaimable, and is left in huge ponds, one of which is behind the largest earth dam in the world, thirteen miles long. Reply

Canadian Oil Sands: Gates and Buffett Visit [view article]
Buffet was in China this year, and even said today he is
looking to invest there. So he likes to see first hand some
of the companies, and sectors that will grow in the
future. He also said he bid 500 million for a company
in China that was turned down. Everyone can
understand oil, and how much it runs our lives. Buffet
knows that the United States wants oil from friendly
countrys, and Canada is just north.

Why did you not mention MRO? Their position I believe is much bigger than SUN. Reply

15 Value Hedge Funds - Portfolio Update [view article]
valueinvestor123 & Jake2 - please visit my blog and read a few posts before making such statements.

Fox - I simply picked 10 funds that have historically been considered value investors - and I define that as buying something for less than it is worth.

User 164258 - you are correct and the glitch is fixed on my blog. . .

I guess I am dumb like you. I think seeing what some pretty bright people are buying and selling is a pretty good place to get ideas to do my own research. It also provides a good benchmark to compare to my own portfolio.

You should do some further research on whether Buffett sold COP. I saw another post that he, in fact, got an expemption from the SEC to not report is position in that stock. Therefore, it simply droppped from the list and not sold. Given that COP is pretty cheap compared to the rest and that he and Gates were up in Canada looking at oil sands, it seems unlikely that he just punched out of this position in one quarter

I don't see much "value" in this kind of blanket value listing. Would prefer something more akin to e-valu-ating individual stocks, industries, etc., rather than, "Wither the hedge herd, mate?". Reply

I would like to know how you define "value" in the context that you are using it. I see one of the funds you mention has a position in First Solar. Reply

All of your relative value plays go lower. The financials are melting down again.
Stay away from all of these names.

Lets assume the worst and that is the Fannie and Freddie stock go bust to zero, the government take the GSE's, so what? are we going to h*** for that? are the mortgages in their books go bust? are we going to crush? the answer is no! all those mortgages in their books will automatically be backed up by the government and even be rated as triple A, that will upgrade the books of all of those holding them into CDOs, MBS, SIVs and cause massive write ups! so what is the nonsense in here? that would be the best case scenario for bond and mortgages insurers, I am sure there are many of them praying for the government to take over the books of Freddie and Fannie. Finding Relative Value in Financial Services [view article]
Certainly hope you're wearing shoes while you're out there wading around in the murky swamp of financials. Wouldn't want to see you step on anything nasty and squishy. Having said that, I'd be looking elsewhere...

ITU (Brazil) Seems to be coming off a low and looks like it might have 25% upside within a 3 month period. It is also on an uptrend. Watch it though. Brazil has a lot of commodity exposure...But it also has a booming internal economy - unlike (err...hack..cough..) the US.

IBN (India). I'd let it come back up through $28, for what might be a potential double. (Don't buy it now... It's dropping again.) Although India has a lot of problems with infrastructure and barricading itself against outside forces, it could be a nice growth story.

I'd also look at a nice stop just below the recent lows on either..

    jegan ;-)

Following Buffett's Railroad Tracks [view article]
It doesn't matter whether or not ethanol can only be transported by rail tanker. This is one factor that can be taken out of the equation, given that people are slowly realizing that ethanol is an inefficient method of producing energy, apart from reducing the proportion of crop available for food production, thus raising food prices. That said, rail is a good industry to hold for the long term. Go Trinity! Reply
