- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 8:02 AM Talks between Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) and Czech brewer Budvar break down over settling a long dispute over which company can use the Budweiser name. The two brewers have been battling for over one hundred years with the last settlement coming in 1939. The issue is a bit more than a running joke for A-B investors as Budvar continues to block entry into potential new markets for Budweiser. 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 9:07 AM Shares of Boston Beer (SAM) roar 14.2% higher premarket after the company's surprise hike in its profit outlook for FY12 fires up positive sentiment. On watch for a sector lift: TAP, BREW, BUD. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 9:15 AM Anheuser Busch InBev (BUD) will submit a plan for shareholder approval for a corporate restructuring of its Brazilian subsidiary. The company wants to simplify AmBev's setup through a dual stock capital structure with voting common shares and non-voting preferred shares. Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Friday, November 23, 2012, 7:29 AM Beer stocks are on watch as SABMiller (SBMRY.PK) moves higher in London trading with the brewer posting better-than-expected profits and catching a pair of analyst upgrades. Concerns over the pressured margins in the sector could ease off a bit after the robust report from SABMiller. (6-month results) Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 11:16 AM A posting on the Office of Fair Trading's website reads "Clearance" for the Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD -0.9%) acquisition of Grupo Modelo. The approval in the U.K. is only the first of many hurdles for the global brewer in the mega-deal. Comment! [M&A, Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 11:05 AM Beer shipments rose 5.3% Y/Y in October to 36.1M cases, according to data released by industry heavyweights. New products and mild temperatures in key regions helped boost demand during the month. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, November 8, 2012, 7:20 AM Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) says it asked Paramount Pictures to obscure the Budweiser logo from a bottle of beer actor Denzel Washington is drinking while he drives in the movie Flight. The move is ironic in a way since the general trend of consumer products companies is to pay to place products in high-visibility movies - notably in the new James Bond movie where 007 swaps his trademark martini for a Heineken (HINKY.PK) in a paid ad. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 8:33 AM Anheuser-Busch (BUD): Q3 EPS of $1.17 misses by $0.10. Revenue of $10.27B misses by $90M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 7:09 AM A big theme pouring out of Anheuser-Busch InBev's (BUD) Q3 report is that the the company is traded volume for price for the second straight quarter. Though slipping market share in key markets is alarming with regulatory issues cropping up, the brewing giant appears unwilling to give up the fight on prices to sell more beer. 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 4:11 AM Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD): Q3 EBITDA +10.6% to $3.98B vs consensus of $4.075B. Revenue +9.1% to $10.27B. EPS +7.3% to $1.17. Volumes -0.3%. Beer sales to U.S. retailers -0.4%, led by a 7% drop in Budweiser sales. Western Europe profits +9.7% on a comparable basis. Loses market share in Brazil because of price increases. Affirms guidance that revenue per hectoliter will increase ahead of inflation. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Consumer]
- Monday, October 29, 2012, 1:42 PM Anheuser-Busch InBev's (BUD) aggressive plan to cut costs and make synergistic acquisitions keeps the company favored on Wall Street (analyst scorecard) even as it remains a target for consumer criticism on the quality of its most popular brands. For A-B, market share looks toppy at 48% in the U.S. and 69% in Brazil, making expense control and M&A the most logical path to grow earnings. On tap: Is a run at PepsiCo's beverage business in a mega-deal the next big move? Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 3:33 PM Goldman Sachs' Mitch Collett downgrades Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD -0.9%) to Sell on concerns the company is valued too high with the brewer's growth track in major markets getting tripped up. The analyst also notes 75% of A-B's sales are in markets where beer consumption is close to being tapped out. 1 Comment [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 7:12 AM The race to tap into more share of the profitable cider market is on as big brewers such as Heineken (HINKY.PK), SABMiller (SBMRY.PK), and Carlsberg look to the fast-growing category. Global cider sales are forecast to see double-digit growth through 2016, although it still only makes up a tiny fraction of the U.S. beer market. Small players have an early advantage, although brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) has a new horse in the race with the introduction of low-calorie Michelob Ultra Light Cider this year. Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 11:10 AM Shares of Monster Beverage (MNST -0.2%) show no ill effect from the candid remarks made by PepsiCo execs on the firm's earnings call pointing to a lack of interest in pursuing M&A activity in the energy drink space. If Coca-Cola (previous) and PepsiCo are scratched out as buyers of Monster, it would appear the leading candidate could be Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD -0.4%) - a company facing a matured beer market in the U.S. and potentially in need of a jolt of energy. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, October 12, 2012, 11:02 AM The scuttlebutt out of DC is that Anheuser-Busch InBev's (BUD +0.4%) bid to buy Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo has hit a rough patch with the DOJ and a number of Senators raising objections. Though A-B expected that it would need to divest a few of its brands to make the deal fly, it's now starting to look like the lopping off may be bigger in scale. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 7:41 AM Beer shipments are on the rise for the first time since 2008 with the first eight months of the year showing a steady 1.9% gain. Though craft beers grab a lot of the attention, industry stalwarts Bud Light (BUD) and Coors Light (TAP) are showing gains with new varieties aimed at cutting into the appeal of niche beers. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
