Tuesday, June 18, 12:17 PMThousands of opponents of the $5B Minas Conga copper and gold project in Peru march on Lake Perol, vowing to stop Newmont Mining (NEM -3%) from eventually draining it to reservoirs NEM and partner Buenaventura (BVN -2.6%) are building. Protesters, who fear the mine would threaten their water, say they plan to build a permanent camp near the lake to impede work on the site.

Protests in Peru over Newmont Mining's (NEM) $5B Conga gold mine make "no sense" and could spell the end of the project if they succeed in preventing the draining of a nearby lake, the CEO of junior partner Buenaventura (BVN) says. Tensions flared up again this week over the proposed mine, with hundreds of protesters taking to the streets and ending nine months of relative calm.

Thursday, May 23, 2:46 PMGold's sharp rise today can be attributed to the dollar's drop vs. the yen; when the dollar drops, gold should rise, as their correlation during the past 24 days has hit -86%. A stock sector that's standing out is emerging market gold miners: South Africa’s Sibanye (SBGL), Harmony (HMY) and AngloGold (AU), plus Peru's Buenaventura (BVN) are stronger, even as their corresponding country ETFs (EZA; EPU) are in the red.

Gold miners (GDX -3.2%) take another beating as gold continues to lose its allure amid disclosures of reduced bets by hedge funds, a World Gold Council report showing gold demand at a three-year low, and a surging dollar. For the miners, it's an ugly world of lower production, higher costs and falling prices. At least nine miners hit 52-week lows: NEM -3%, GG -2.7%, AUY -4.8%, HMY -6.3%, AU -2.5%, BVN -1.1%, ANV -7.4%, NG -2.7%, GSS -5.8%.

Tuesday, April 30, 2:04 PMQ1 results spelled out a worst-case scenario for Compañia de Mina Buenaventura (BVN -6.9%): earnings came up short, production fell, and costs didn’t drop nearly enough. Credit Suisse cuts BVN to Neutral from Outperform, finding “no positives in sight" for shares other than rising gold prices - and even that wouldn’t provide as much of a boost as its peers.

Gold miners soon will release quarterly earnings, but J.P. Morgan says investors should focus on what the companies are doing to cut costs. Barrick Gold (ABX) would be profitable even if gold falls to $1,300/oz., the firm says, but remains vulnerable due to cash needed to operate the Pascua Lama mine and massive debt on its balance sheet. Goldcorp (GG) has a strong balance sheet and $2B in an undrawn revolver.

Compañía de Minas Buenaventura's (BVN -4.4%) loss looks big even on a day when gold mining stocks are hit hard. It isn't just the drop in BVN’s stock price - its price swings also are getting wider, as its 30-day historical volatility has jumped 46% since Jan. 18 to 28%. BVN has dropped 21% YTD, far more than Newmont Mining (NEM), its partner in Peru, and the gold miners ETF (GDX).

Peru's biggest miners are expected to post strong Q3 earnings, but those results could be negatively affected by lower prices for their products and higher costs. Brokerage Inteligo sees Southern Copper (SCCO) posting a near-10% drop in net income, due to lower base metals prices and maintenance at one of its refineries. Lower net earnings also are expected at Buenaventura (BVN).
