- Friday, May 17, 10:29 AM Demand is rising for "frackwear" that oil and gas workers can wear to protect themselves from wires and explosions, and retailers and clothes makers are trying to take advantage. VF Corp. (VFC) says it is pulling research teams from malls and placing them alongside workers in oil fields. Retailers including Cabela's (CAB) say they are seeing rising demand for sturdy shoes and fire-resistant clothing. Comment! [Energy, Consumer]
- Monday, April 29, 9:45 AM Sturm Ruger (RGR +3.1%) trades higher in advance of its Q1 earnings report due out after the closing bell. The earnings whispering is turning into a dull roar that estimates may be too low for the gun maker. As SA contributor eWhispers notes, the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System shows a 107% Y/Y increase in demand for firearms. Cabela's (CAB +0.7%) and Smith & Wesson (SWHC +1.3%) could see some fireworks later today too. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 25, 1:28 PM Retail industry insiders are impressed with Cabela's (CAB) beyond just the rush of sales linked to the ongoing debate on gun control. Management has done a cracking job with execution and instilling brand loyalty - witnessed to a degree by the company boasting the highest percentage (95%) in retail of shoppers that use an in-store credit card for outside purchases. Cabela's shares are up 14.4% on the day and 54% YTD with bulls still maintaining the chain is nowhere near a point of saturation in the U.S. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]

CTXS -7%. 1 Comment [On the Move] - Thursday, April 25, 8:11 AM More on Cabela's (CAB) Q1: The retailer puts in a powerhouse quarter as comparable store sales soar 24% and its direct to consumer channel picks up steam. The merchandise gross margin increased 110 bps y/y to 35.6% as consumer opted for products such as guns, ammunition, and footwear that padded profitability. Though the debate on gun control may have driven customers into the company's stores, the increase in active credit card accounts and online sales indicates they may keep coming back. CAB +4.1% premarket to $58.50. (PR) 1 Comment [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 8:09 AM Cabela's (CAB): Q1 EPS of $0.70 beats by $0.11. Revenue of $802.5M (+28.7% Y/Y) beats by $30.13M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, April 24, 3:40 PM GE Capital (GE +2.5%) cuts off lending to gun shops in response to public backlash since the Sandy Hook shootings. Though the company isn't the first financial firm to back away from involvement with the gun industry, the development puts the spotlight back on sellers such as Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS -0.4%), Wal-Mart (WMT -1.2%), and Cabela's (CAB +0.9%) which could see more foot traffic. It's also of interest to gun manufacturers Smith & Wesson (SWHC +0.8%) and Sturn Ruger (RGR -0.8%) - wallowing around with relatively low P-E ratios with future demand tough to forecast. 32 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 18, 3:05 PM Cabela's (CAB -5%) trades lower after gun control legislation fails in the Senate. The prevailing sentiment is that the retailer would benefit with extra traffic if gun show background checks were increased. Comment!

[On the Move] - Monday, March 11, 1:21 PM The weak Q4 results from Dick's Sporting Goods are swaying sentiment on other sporting goods stocks. Decliners: Hibbett Sports (HIBB) -2.0%, Big Five Sporting Goods (BGFV) -0.5%, Cabelas (CAB) -0.7%. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 14, 10:13 AM More on Cabela's (CAB -2.3%): Comparable stoe sales rose 12% during Q4 helped by a "surge" in ammunition and firearms sales. The company also posted a solid quartet within its financial services business with chargeoffs down and credit card balances up. Over the next year, Cabela's intends to repurchase 750K shares of common stock. (PR) 1 Comment [Consumer]

Michael Bryant: Dividend stocks will be in demand as the crisis continues. Nothing like cash from the company. I am also watching HCI & SPF.
