Short Interest at Record Levels [view article]
Interesting, but not the best analysis. A quick look (via Bloomberg) of the NYSE Short Interest as a % of Shares Outstanding (NYSIPRTS Index) indicates this number has hit an "all time high" nearly every week since mid 2006. The S&P rallied about 25% higher from 6/06 to 10/07.I would hazard a guess that the increase in short interest is more closely correlated to growth in hedge fund AUM than sentiment.
There are better sentiment trackers out there, such as AAII and ISE. Reply

Macke, just buy some AAPL sit back, and leave it alone for two years. Oh yea, by the way, lay off the caffeine a little bit. ReplyShort Interest at Record Levels [view article]

Although % of float is a consideration when you're playing the short squeeze, what's an even better indicator is the days to cover. If a stock has a short 30% of float but only a few days to cover, the effect of the short may not be as pronounced as if the days to cover are much longer. @Macke with the call on Apple as a weak consumer play:What many people like Macke don't seem to realize is that Apple is thinking way beyond the iPod at this point in their business plan. We can see this forward thinking embodied in the iPhone in addition to the continual upgrade of their computers.
There can be no doubt that the halo effect of iPod owners switching over the Mac computers has been a huge benefit for Apple's overall market share. (Which continues to far exceed the industry average). Besides, Apple is also in the software business and continues to push into new territories (i.e. video rentals and other multimedia projects like iTV).
Any company that is trying to compete with Apple at this point is, I think, well behind the game as they not only have to overcome iPod's domination of the market, these competitors also have to find a way to seize on Apple's momentum and figure out a way to transfer music player users to a larger array of more meaningful (and more profitable) products. The Cheesecake Factory: Still the Best of Breed [view article]
From Canada, I have eaten at Cheesecake Factory restaurants in Thousand Oakes CA, Phoenix AZ, Norfolk VA and Albany NY. In every case long lines of customers waiting for tables, excellent service, and good food. If managed well, CAKE is bound to be a success. They need to get a better menu than their cheesecakes. Everything else on the menu is crap. ReplyThe Cheesecake Factory: Still the Best of Breed [view article]
i agree with this. the 2006/2007 low point on the the charts, lower $20s, has some solid potential in terms of P/E and P/S valuation and CASH FLOW buyout prospect. everytime i go to the Palm Beach and Broward county sites the experience is great. The Grand Lux is a generic "back office" clone but i am anxious to see what the ROCK SUGAR concept is going to do. I would be surprised to see apprecation towards $30 barring energy factor. Thanks, Faisal Laljee, for your perceptive response. This is the first time I have received a response from a member of the Seeking Alpha A-1 team, and I really appreciate it. Your comment on oil price having no effect on computer spending is right on the mark. I read, in this week's Barron's (received last Saturday, 5/26), that the unemployment rate appears to be understated (in my view, that figure is subject to manipulation, and has been manipulated from time to time without disclosure). Still, people appear to be using their plastic with abandon -- witness the jump in MA yesterday. So, as an individual investor, I am completely confused, to say the least. Again, many thanks for your thoughtful comments over time. I really enjoyed reading them -- yours as well as many of your colleagues. omooc Reply
