Zipcar (ZIP) acquires Austrian firm Denzel Mobility CarSharing GmbH for an undisclosed amount as it makes another move into Europe. The strategy makes some sense at its surface with more Europeans seemingly predisposed to share rides than U.S. counterparts.

Zipcar (ZIP +1.5%) stands to see some more direct competition as car rental giant Enterprise Holdings makes a move to offer an hourly car rental service after buying up a couple of small local brands. It's not a new story for Zipcar, as shares have already fallen off 31.2% YTD largely on fears of competition from new sources.

Shares of Hertz Global (HTZ -7.5%) and Avis Budget (CAR -8.4%) both fall harder than Dollar Thrifty (DTG -2.2%) as the dance between the three car rental companies continues. The prevailing thought is that if Hertz doesn't snap up Dollar Thrifty fairly quickly, it risks Avis coming back in to bid. But tricky part for the company is that it has to divest assets, appease DTG shareholders, and deal with the FTC to get a buyout done.

Sen. Barbara Boxer files a bill that would require car rental companies such as Hertz Global (HTZ -1.8%), Dollar Thrifty (DTG -1.3%), and Avis Budget (CAR -0.8%) to pull recalled cars from their fleets. A group representing the industry opposes the proposed legislation, saying companies already adopt conservative standards and don't need to be more highly regulated.

Zipcar (ZIP +0.5%) CEO Scott Griffith says the firm's car-sharing service already has 700K members as it sees plenty of room to expand by tapping into the 10M people who can walk to a Zipcar location in less than 10 minutes. He also notes that typical customers come from younger generations that seem to care more about the smartphone they use than the brand of car they drive.

Zipcar (ZIP -8.9%) is making new post-IPO lows following its Q1 report. Weighing on investors is the company's guidance for Q2 revenue of $71M-$74M and net income of -$1M to $1M, which doesn't compared favorably with a consensus of $73.8M in revenue and $0.02 in EPS. In addition, Zipcar's Q1 revenue growth in its 4 "Established Markets" slightly exceeded total growth, which suggests newer markets may be underperforming.
