    Avis Budget Group Inc. (CAR -3.3%) dips after saying on Friday it was removing about 10K Ford Focus sedans from its rental fleet in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico amid a safety recall related to potential problems with windshield-wiper motors. The recall affects certain 2012 models manufactured at one Ford (F -2.6%) plant.

    Shares of rental car companies posted strong gains after MKM Partners pegs Dollar Thrifty (DTG +3%) as "best positioned" to benefit from strong residual values due to its high mix of owned-outright vehicles and of compact and midsize vehicles. But Avis (CAR +5.5%) and Hertz (HTZ +6%) also gain on MKM's belief that used-car prices will be supported by higher new-car prices.

    Car sharing firm Zipcar (ZIP -3.3%) says it's a lead investor in Wheelz - a college campus car sharing network that connects students who own cars with students who need to borrow them. The company expects to record a $1M loss in 2012 under the equity method of accounting tied to its stake in Wheel - a mark that was already figured into its previously released guidance.

    More on Avis Budget Group (CAR): Q4 misses on all fronts due to acquisition-related charges stemming from its purchase of Avis Europe in October, 2011. Revenue actually increased 33% Y/Y on a jump in day rental volume plus a reduction in pricing. Shares -3.2% AH.

    Avis Budget (CAR -0.2%) announces a multi-year agreement with United Continental (UAL +0.2%) to expand a relationship between the two firms with marketing opportunities through online and voice channels. The firm will now become UAL's "preferred car rental partner."

    Shares of Zipcar (ZIP -14.1%) sink after the firm misses with its Q4 report and issues a tepid outlook for Q1. The car sharing provider increased its usage revenue per vehicle up 7% to $63 a day, but expansion in Europe isn't adding revenue to keep up with growth stateside.

    Zipcar (ZIP) continues its expansion efforts (I, II), announcing it has exercised its option to obtain a majority stake (60%) in Barcelona-based car sharing service provider Avancar. Zipcar, which also recently acquired U.K. car rental firm Streetcar,  adds it plans on further expanding its European footprint going forward.

    Shares of Zipcar (ZIP -1.6%) lose steam - continuing a downward trend since the firm's IPO - despite launching service in Los Angeles and San Francisco this month (I, II) and catching a favorable rating from Needham. Will car-sharing ever be a viable consumer option if the jobs reports keep improving?

    Avis Budget (CAR +5.1%) outperforms after Goldman lifts its estimates and PT for the car rental provider. The firm expects Avis, which fell last week following its Q3 report, to move higher thanks to a combination of rental volume growth, improving margins, and the potential for synergies from its acquisition of Avis Europe.
