Friday, May 24, 7:46 AM Tornados striking the U.S. this week are expected to cause anywhere from $2B-$5B in insured losses, according to Eqecat, obviously with most of the damaged coming from the Moore, OK disaster. At the top end of the range, this week would rank as the 2nd worst ever, behind only the April 2011 tornados in Alabama. TRV, CB, ALL all dropped amid the tornado news early in the week and have held steady since. Comment! [Financials]

Monday, April 29, 3:52 PM Chubb (CB) has its price target raised to $90 from $85 at MKM Partners, which continues to rate the stock a Hold. Noting Q1's earnings beat, MKM says the company is off to a good start this year, but its valuation is among the highest in the industry. Management noted success (CC transcript) at passing through "meaningful" rate hikes, enough, says MKM, to continue the trend of slow and steady margin expansion. Comment! [Financials]

Excluding catastrophes, ratio was 84 in Q1 vs. 89.4 last year. Expense ratio about flat at 32.3%. Net written premiums up 4% to $3.1B. P&C investment income of $288M, off 6%. Net realized income gains contributed $0.34 to the quarter vs. $0.13 a year ago (total income of $2.48 in Q1). Book value/share of $61.79, up from $60.45 on Dec. 31, $57.37 a year ago.
