- Wednesday, May 22, 11:07 AM AIG remains at the top Goldman's list of hedge fund hotels (the 50 stocks appearing most frequently among hedge fund top 10 holdings). Google (GOOG) retains its #2 position. Apple (APPL) - in the top spot for 3 years until February - remains at #3. Goldman notes the basket has outperformed the S&P a bit this year and the top 20 has done better by more than 1000 basis points. We smell an ETF offering. The rest of the top 20: C, GM, PCLN, VMED, NWSA, MSFT, HTZ, JPM, APC, PFE, QCOM, CHTR, HES, CBS, EBAY, DAL, EQIX. 2 Comments
- Friday, May 17, 9:53 AM Disney's (DIS -0.3%) ESPN snatched the rights to the U.S. Open tennis tournament for 2015-2025 away from CBS (CBS +2.5%) after the network aired the finals and semifinals for almost 50 straight years. It's another example of a content grab by the sports juggernaut which helps it land the highest carriage fees in the industry and adds just a bit more to the I-Would-Be-A-Cord-Cutter-If-Not-For-Sports mentality. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 16, 10:31 AM CBS (CBS +0.2%) made a spirited presentation at the upfront meetings in NYC as the company brought out both David Letterman and Robin Williams to promote new shows while CEO Les Moonves took a number of well-placed shots at competitors. Media analysts see the fall lineup from CBS as strong enough to preserve the network's ratings lead and bring in more than its share of advertising dollars in FY13. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 11:41 AM Senator Mark Warner calls the bluff of broadcasters (CMCSA, CBS, DIS, NWS, NWSA) threatening they will pull their major networks off the air to cable if Aereo isn't stopped in courtroom battles by noting FCC broadcast licenses could be pulled in that scenario. With Aereo growing around like the country like a weed, and the proposed Television Consumer Freedom Act including a ban on networks converting to cable, the headaches of the industry have become a little more pronounced. Don't expect CBS head honcho Les Moonves to stay quiet on the latest development. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 15, 9:37 AM An interesting development from the upfront meetings in New York City is the strong presentation by Univision in front of media buyers as the Spanish-language network makes the case for higher advertising rates due to its defeat of NBC in the sweeps period and the high rate of Latino growth in the U.S. What to watch: Univision is increasingly a force to be reckoned with and could take a little bit of bargaining power away from NBCUniversal (CMCSA) and CBS (CBS) during the upfront confab. (Bloomberg video) 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 14, 9:44 AM Aereo seems to be expanding faster than broadcasting networks can fire off their legal missives. The company announced it will be available in Atlanta on June 17 to be followed shortly by another 21 cities. Backed by InterActiveCorp (IACI +0.7%), the re-transmission upstart continues to be a thorn in the side of the media industry, particularly CBS (CBS +1.1%) with its reliance on fees from pay-TV operators. 1 Comment [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, May 13, 11:24 AM Aereo says under a new pricing plan subscribers can pay $8 per month for unlimited streaming of local broadcast programming and up to 20 hours of remote DVR storage. For an additional $4 per month, users can receive up to 60 hours of storage. The counter-attack: CBS (CBS +0.3%) is busy with legal maneuvers while ABC (DIS +0.1%) says it will launch an iOS app this week that allows residents in New York and Philadelphia to watch local stations live on their iPhones or iPads. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 9, 8:04 AM Senator John McCain will introduce legislation shortly to overhaul the TV business by giving consumers the option to buy channels on an individual basis (a la carte) - instead of seeing only large bundles as options. The politician will face fierce resistance from broadcast (NWS, DIS, CMCSA, CBS, AMCX, SNI, OUTD, DISCA, VIAB) and cable companies (CVC, CHTR, TWC) but may have a friend in upstart Aereo which has been rankling a few feathers as well. (Aereo timeline) 28 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, May 6, 1:48 PM The future of advertising is online video instead of the traditional 30-second TV spot, according to an interesting take from BTIG's Rich Greenfield. The analyst points to the effective ads on YouTube and Hulu from a number of high-profile companies, while the increasing use of DVRs is also a game changer. Though the broadcast industry (NWS, CMCSA, CBS) still pushes back over the claims, it's hard to argue that those still watching TV on the big screen in real times aren't more easily distracted than in the past with all the gadgets at their sides while ads sail by. (research report registration required) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, May 6, 1:16 PM Aereo files legal papers seeking to bar CBS (CBS -0.2%) from suing it in new markets where it's looking to debut its re-transmission service. Barry Diller's startup is trying to lean on a favorable ruling in a New York court to set a precedent in other areas of the country. Though broadcasters including News Corp (NWS, NWS) Univision threaten to move to cable if Aereo proliferates, a protracted battle in the court system is probably their first option. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 3, 10:49 AM The major broadcast networks aren't giving up the summer months to cable rivals (and Netflix?) this year and plan to keep a fresh slate of programming in front of viewers. Leading the charge is CBS (CBS +0.8%) with the Stephen King-inspired Under the Dome scheduled to debut in June. What to watch: With new programs come higher development and marketing costs. How much will Comcast (CMCSA +1.3%), News Corp (NWSA +1.3%), and Disney (DIS +0.7%) invest in the summer ventures of their broadcast TV properties and will it be enough? 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 1, 4:05 PM CBS (CBS): Q1 EPS of $0.73 beats by $0.05. Revenue of $4.04B beats by $0.03B. Shares +1% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 1, 3:01 PM CBS (CBS +1.8%) CEO Les Moonves warns the network could go off the air in a matter of days as the company continues to ramp up the rhetoric over the issue of Aereo transmitting its shows. The exec also threw aside the notion CBS might buy Hulu - a service he thinks will move to a subscription-only model. (Previous on the nuclear option for broadcasters: I, II) 2 Comments [Consumer]

- Tuesday, April 30, 1:29 PM BTIG wants to know why major media companies aren't more focused on driving ratings higher by making content more accessible on platforms where competition is light. According to the investment firm, it's starting to feel like the obsession over protecting retransmission fees from cable/satellite operators is overriding the potential riches of growing advertising in new ways.
